Run him between the tackles.
Our line appears to be better at blowing a hole than moving down the line latteraly.
See, it seems Portis and our line are opposites. Portis is better laterally, like in Denver. Our line is better up the gut where Portis's small frame makes him less effective.
Get a qb the defense has to respect and watch Portis run.
That won't happen anytime soon.

That sounds right in theory Chris but in reality is dead wrong. Portis is a fast back and has good cut ability but that doesn't equall good outside running ability.
Portis is having trouble because he is having to wait before hitting holes. He has to take a stutter step while he waits for a Guard or center to pull down the line and then follow him through.
Portis is a explosion type back. He needs to hit the hole quick at full speed. His cutback ability shows itself against the linebackers. A perfect example of this is when the entire line fires off the ball and hits the guy on their left with the exception of the right tightend who blocks the defensive end out.The whole flow of the line is rolling left and Portis heads toward the line toward the left. He then makes a hard cut right.
Same up the middle. Blow a hole between the guard and center. Have Portis hit the hole hard and cut right while the H-=back is coming left accross the grain toward the middle linebacker.
Of course this is all preceeded by the fact that the defense is respecting the pass with play-action. If they don't think your going to pass, no RB will make good yards. EX: Jamal Lewis - 1st half.

Put in a QB that can throw the long ball accurately so it will push the Defense secondary back 5 yrds and give room for the run.
Also Portis is not the type of back who should be tip toeing around in the back field waiting for the holes to develope. His skills are getting the ball and running through the hole and creating missed tackles. The other problem is our line is not big enough to push people off the line to create a hole for Portis.
NEEDS NOW:
1. A QB that can throw long accurately!and
and throw on the run.
2. Speed routes for receivers to push the
D-fense back 5yrds.
3. Give Portis the ball and have him run up
field. Stop the tip toeing.
NEEDS NEXT YEAR:
1. Bigger O-linemen.
2. D-fensive pass rusher/Bigger D-line.

Until Ramsey goes in thats a moot point.

Pointless until Ramsey goes in. The defense could careless if we run streaks, they know Brunell can't get it there. So they will continue to stuff Portis.

I've been wondering if that is why Gibbs has been so adamant about keeping Brunell in there even when Brunell wasn't a 100%. Ramsey was horrible last year when rolling out and throwing and appears to be strictly a pocket-passer. At this point, we need someone a little more mobile...at least until our line starts to gel and performs a little better.

Does anyone see us running that off-tackle play that Indiannapolis uses all the time effectively? I'm referring to the play where Manning sticks out the ball showing hand-off the entire way back to James, who takes it looking for any hole in the O-line which slants hard either to the right or left the whole time? Just a thought, it might give Portis (especially without a full-back to get in his way) some room to pick and choose holes or cutback if he needs to.
I think that a good way to get your line to make nice, big holes for you is to not call them out in the media after a loss.
Not everybody handles rejection and humiliation as well as Buges did.
That's just my little theory, though. I think really that we just need time to come together. These things are rarely overnight deliveries. Jansen was more then what met the eye, you know ? He was the stalwart lineman, the ground wire. He kept everybody calm and quieted down. Sure, he's still around...but it's not the same as being out there, doing battle with your boys. I wonder what Jansen would've said to Portis after that little rant that made all the papers.
Oh, wait. No, I don't.
