No one calling out betts??

Post by 2K1NSM2U »

In my opinion he had to do a lot with losing the game for the skins. When you are the only one stopping a blitzing safety from hitting your QB and you completely miss.....I mean he didnt even touch him. That FF and FR by Ed Reed and then returned for a td is really what took all the momentum away from the redskins. Before then it seemed like the redskins were actually going to pull out the win. Just effort like this well lack there of is what has been losing the games for the skins.

Sure, he wiffed badly on that play.
Could we have still won after that play? Yes
Should we have? Yes

I'll admit, as soon as it happened I thought, "here we go again".

Betts missed one block. (albeit an important one)
How many sacks did our corners miss on the exact same blitz?
How many passes did Brunell throw into the dirt or out of bounds?

Another thing on Betts. Why the heck would you send in your short yardage back and run him to the outside?

Betts

Joe Gibbs has a long memory. The poor effort made by Betts on Reed will be remembered during the off-season.

This may be his last year with us if he does not do something very good to compensate for his lack of effort.

it wasn't just that he whiffed...once reed got passed he just quit and stood there and became a spectator. If Dan Snyder could figure out a way to do it, he'd sell those tickets that Betts had on that play, because he had the best seat in the house.

I agree. First, his attempt to block Reed was just pitiful. Second, he sort of gave up after after the block. Lastly, he then took a bad angle at running down Reed.

I suspect that if Parcells were coach there'd be a decent chance he would be cut.

Man, THANK YOU for starting this thread. I was so ticked off last night about Betts last night I could have broken my tv set.

Ed Reed made a nice blitz, but Betts saw him running at him for fifteen yards. What a sorry half hearted attempt to put a block on the man! They should put that play on infinite loop on a television in the locker room this week.

Sorry, the whole offense is at fault.

Watch any NFL game and you will see a QB get clobbered at least once. What matters is how the offense responds after it.

You cant pin a loss on one player, however you can pin a loss on a few. So add 3 more names to Betts and I'll agree with you.

He stunk it up - no doubt. The offense can't even be called "offense" - it's more like - try not to lose, or, hang on to the ball as long as you can before fumbling or throwing a pick... this offense just plain SUCKS!

Yeah Betts would have been better off holding Reed and getting the penalty.

I agree - Betts had a big contribution to the loss... he blew it. But the ENTIRE Offense shares in the blame. For the amount of money those players are making and they can only accumulate 107 total yards offense????
Disgraceful.

Betts had a bad game all around he bit hard on the fake reverse on the punt return. Since when did he become our third down back..I'd rather see Morton. Ed Reed was incredible last night. I don't know if I ever recall a SS controling to game like he did last night!

And ATV suggested that Parcells would have cut Betts already.

Gibbs is just as stern as Parcells; he has a quieter style. I can't remember a player that Gibbs criticized in public, but I can remember many who were cut. Charlie Brown, Jay Schroeder, Gerald Riggs, Barry Wilburn -- all big-time players, and much more accomplished than Betts. All vanished, quietly. First to the bench (ie, "practice squad" these days), and then they were gone. Various reasons -- I remember that Wilburn went from INT leader to drugs -- but gone they were.

Betts might not make it to the off-season unless he shows much more in practice and in the next game. Absolutely right.

Two things:

(a) That play was a momentum-changer, and

(b) Betts looked like he failed at effort as well as technique.

If the effort is not there, the technique is not even relevant. But yes, both issues are true.

We should have had Cooley or Sellers there.

I have said it before but it is relevant now: Betts is not Gibbs material.

Right, that was the point. Betts not only failed in technique, but, worst of all, he failed in effort.

Does anybody remember offhand the name of the blocker who missed the guy who blocked the punt in SB 18? Wasn't he a generally decent special teams player? And did he get cut the next season, or the season after?

Ah...it was Otis Wonsley, the number 3 RB, who generally gave 110% on special teams. Cut after the '85 season. So he played two more seasons. Checked the great team histories site at

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/teams ... s/redskins

So ghere we have it Mr. Betts. Play as hard as Otis Wonsley, and you might last a few more years. Play like this and you'll be gone.

So is the offense still ahead of our defense in points given up? It's gotta be frustrating to be a Redskin on defense this far into the season. I'm sure things will click sometime soon, but it just seems like every week there's that one or two plays that nearly kill you to watch.

Interesting I thought I mentioned cutting Bett's and Morton and keeping the rest. Hmmmm. Imagine that. Talk Morton up all you want but I can't see paying all that money for a kick returner. Utilize the man. Pass to him out of the back or something.
