enough with the Denver System
just because the Broncos have had great backs over the years, people just try to blame it on the system. They say the players are overated, well actually the SYSTEM is overrated! Terrell Davis is one of the greatest backs of all time, just think if he had not got hurt... Mike Anderson is a wannabe Edgerin James (Big and Fast) and Clinton Portis is dominant. But now look at Quientin Griffin, he had one good game AGAINST THE CHEIFS and all of his other games he have stunk! Clinton is just adjusting to a whole new blocking shceme. Give him time and he will be back to his old self.

Actually, the "system" in Denver is outstanding. Shanahan has got some mojo workin' out there. He just knows how to pick 'em. Of the four RB's you've cited here, only one has been only marginally successful, and he's young yet. Give Quentin time.
I absolutely agree that Portis will win here, but I think we need to utilize Betts and Sultan McCullough as well. Portis is at his best when you're not sure who is getting the ball. Betts can do the goal-line stuff, and the 3rd- and-2 runs better, in my view, due to his size. He can make his own hole, which is something that Portis has to learn. Portis can take advantage of a seam better than most, but making his own hole, with only a six-foot head start ? Not his bag, yet.
I wonder why Ladell is the forgotten man here, these days ?

Their system is phenomonal. Lets take the homer blinders off for a second . They have one of, if not the best offensive fronts in the game. Don't give me no dirbag BS because we are far from the best. They are smaller linemen but that give them quickness. Thats one of the main problems Clinton is having here, he's having to wait longer for linemen to make their blocks than he did before. The system is great and I'd take it anyday!

Bugel said it is not surprising that Portis has had to adjust to a new system and a new offensive line. Denver is known for having one of the most athletic lines in the NFL, constantly churning out 1,000-yard rushers, and Portis, a smaller back at 5 feet 11, 205 pounds, was accustomed to using his speed more to the outside with the Broncos. "We're a little more power inside" running team, Bugel said, and how Portis much improves gaining yards between the tackles bears watching as the Redskins try to reverse the course of their season.

Our line would be good if they went for the opponents knees. Denvers linemen are real close to being dirty. Hey, but if it works...........

going for the knees
that's fine if your pass blocking or sealing off the pursuit but you want to drive forward during run blocking. besides, once a lineman goes down he's out of the play. He had better have made that block or the RB is screwed. going for the legs means you have to be perfect every time and you can only block one guy. No pancaking an end then moving on to a linebacker.

OMG, to say Denver's system is crap is ridiculous! They have had 1500 yards+ every year Shanny has been there so far! RB's have higher YPC there, and make not so good backs into good backs! I'm not saying Portis isn't a good back, he is! Just not as good as he would be in Denver's system!
Denver had Terrell Davis, Aaron Craver, Rod Bernstine:
TD-1995-1117 Yards
AC-1995-333 Yards
RB-1995-76 Yards
Denver had Terrell Davis:
1996-1538 Yards
1997-1750 Yards

Denver had Olandis Gary, Terrell Davis, Derek Loville:
OG-1999-1159 Yards
TD-1999-211 Yards
DL-1999-203 Yards (heck DL, never posted higher than a 3.3 Avg in 5 years with Sea & SF and posted a 5.1 Avg that year!)
Denver had Mike Anderson:
2000-1500 Yards
Denver had Terrell Davis, Mike Anderson and Olandis Gary:
TD-2001-701 Yards
MA-2001-678 Yards
OG-2001-228 Yards

2003-1591 Yards

My thoughts are that Denvers system is pretty good. I don't consider it great, like many others do. They have a very good cohesive OLine. Terrell was a stud in a good system with a great QB and a very good OLine. Gary and Anderson were barely above average backs in a good system with a very good OLine. Portis is a stud who was in a good system with a very good OLine.
Portis is going to do what Terrell would have done if he hadn't gotten injured.
Denver has a good system with a very good OLine. They also have a good eye for talent. But, Portis was not a result of that system. He was underutilized and still got over 3k yards in his first two seasons. Big things are coming...

He genius, Griffin is 12 yards shy of Portis' production this time last year. He is on touch down behind Portis' TD this time last year, and--here's the funny part, GRIFFIN DID NOT PLAY LAST GAME! Griffin has played bad--in Denver standards--and yet, he is still step for step with Portis of 2003.
How do you explain Droughns? Here is a guy who was cut by the Lions, the Lions!; and yet he is about to be the starting running back, and just broke a team record with 193 yards against Carolina.
How do you explain Gary? Here is a guy who rushed for 1300 yards in the Denver systems, traded to Detroit, took over Droughns' spot, and--well...what happened to him? He is home watching the game, while Droughns is about to be the next star in Denver.
I don't mind you sticking up for Portis, however I think you should ask your golden boy how he feels about the Denver system. Couple stats for you: 9 straight years of 1K or more yard individual rushing seasons. Over 21,000 yards rushed. With 4 different backs, a 6th rounder, 7th rounder, 2nd rounder, and a 4th rounder. Where was Droughns drafted? Hell I don't even know, but by seasons end I think he will be added to that list, so we must find out. I guess Shanahan is just lucky, aye?
Message from Denver to DC: PORTIS IS OVERRATED!

Why do you think he was underutilized? I agree with you, btw, but why do you think Shanahan would go from rushing the football 30-40 times a game with Davis, Gary, and Anderson; and then draw back to less than 20 carries for Portis?
Watch Portis on the sidelines in the second half next game. Then go back and think about my question. Portis is not close to Davis. Davis carried the Broncos game in and game out. The Broncos carried Portis and used him like a china set. Hate to burst your bubble though.

Gibbs was brought in after Shanahan's system was in place. Terrell Davis had already ran for a 1500 yard, and 1700 yard season before Gibbs showed up. However, if you are looking for a constant other than Shanahan, running back coach Bobby Turner has coached up all the Denver backs under Shanahan.
chico - you beat me to it. Alex Gibbs is a great o-line coach. One of the best the NFL has ever had, if not THE best. Denver's team lacks the depth they once had and they've lost some Olinemen due to injury and outright age. Plus, Gibbs being in Atlanta... that's a lot of changes year-to-year. You nailed it man - good post.
Good posts by a number of people BUT really "enough already"! Let's look at this after the season. I hope E07 is big enough to revisit us all then!
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
