How Far Are We Away From Being a Good Team?
What does this year's team need to do to improve?

Eliminate mistakes and play consisntently on offense. Also, improve our goal line offense, why not put Rock Cartwright in?? The effort is certainly there, but execution sometimes is lacking. The season is still young, and I believe we will rebound from Monday's loss by destroying Cleveland without Kellen.

Needs are being addressed.
We need to avoid dropped passes, blown routes, missed assignments, penalties and turn overs, the kind of things that are achieved with -stability- in our personnel, coaching, practices and execution. The OL needs to work in sync. These issues are being addressed but they can not be accomplished overnight.
Also please have a look at "NFL concedes mistakes by officials" in The Washington Times with a link available in our Sport News page of this site. I am glad the NFL acknowledged those two blown calls, which really were an important factor in the outcome of the game.

The article should settle most issues discussed in this board in recent days.
I look forward to see further improvement on Sunday against the Browns.

Daniel Snyder has defined incompetence, failure and greed to true Washington Redskins fans for over a decade and a half. Stay away from football operations !!!
Brunell needs to stop overthrowing our receivers and throwing passes to the benches.
Our offense needs to get AGGRESSIVE because when we aren't aggressive, we don't score.
Our line needs to improve their blocking. Whatever they're doing isn't working because Brunell just got CREAMED last night.

hate to be the downer here, but I think it's gonna take a year. I don't think it's unrealistic to give things time to gel and get the right people. We're gonna win some games and we'll be better at the end of the year. Heck, we might even make the playoffs... but next year, we'll be a good team. Right now, we're struggling for average.
All this team needs is for a few breaks to go their way. 1-2 is not as bad as it seems. If Gardner catches the ball in the end zone against, the skins beat the Giants. If the Refs get two PI penalties right we beat Dallas. Everyone got caught up in Gibbs being back, it's great to still be in the game when the 4th qtr roles around. This team is not as far away as it seems. It always feels 10 times worse when you lose to Dallas.

i would like to see more clean handoffs... i swear there are usually 5 times a game where portis and brunnell have very bad hand offs...
i don't know if it is brunnell or portis but it really scares me... it is just the tip of the iceberg... proving that our offense is out of sink....

See right now I'm on lettuce... Pretty soon I'll be on fries... After that.. The grill... And after that... Comes Assistant. Manager.... and That's When the Big Bucks roll in!
Re: Needs are being addressed.
I hate this "League admits" angle. The league "admits" their mistakes every week. It's NOT an excuse. We should have killed Dallas.
I think it's evident that we need A LOT of work and personnel changes to get within spitting distance of Philly. Who's really lapped the division.
Wonker

I've always said it could take a year with this year going 8-8. I honestly don't think we're that far off. It's only game three and this could take some time. Things will start clicking. I agree with most of what everyone said re: specifics though.
The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject.

We need;
Three step drops
Sweeps for Clinton
Heavy RB pounding featuring Betts
TEs need more passes with Brunell at the Helm
Go deep often to KEEP 8 men out of the box!
We should start every game as if it was a 2 minute drill.
We should play the way we ended the Dallas game. ETC......................................

The team is close. But, no matter how well they play, they won't touch Philly this year. There are still missing pieces.
Another few weeks to really start playing as a Gibbs team.
Another few weeks for Gibbs to get his "game brain" fully in synch, as well... things like clock management, and game plan adjustments still have some rusty spots.

What in your opinion are the missing pieces?

Two more top tier OL (one being a center), a true speed rushing DE, a power runner who can move the pile. One more solid CB.

I think we have all the pieces. Of course, one of them is sitting on the sideline the rest of the year. Jansen and Ramsey get into this offense full blown and the team has a year under their belt, we will be a force next season. I also expect more concentration on a stud DE in the draft next season. I mean, we should be 3-0 right now. This same schedule next season, and we would definitely be 3-0.
Great things are just around the corner. Imagine our current offense without all the miscues and great touch passes on the long ball. Then add our suffocating defense to that. I think we'd match up pretty damn well with the Colts, who I think are the best team in football right now.

When will the Skins be a good team again?
When Dan Snyder is no longer the owner.
It's as simple as that.
I've been a Redskins fan since the early 80s. I've cheered and screamed as loudly as any fan over the years, and I just can't take it anymore. I need to vent about this Napoleon-complex tyrant that has driven our beloved franchise into the ground. I've never seen a bigger joke of a team than what the Skins have become since Snyder became the owner. We could have the top players in every position in the league, and we would still lose because Snyder undermines his coaching staff at every opportunity.
Oh sure, he may not be calling plays from the skybox anymore, or trying to keep Jeff George's career afloat, but his "I want it now" behavior has created a horrible atmosphere where players only play for themselves. Why should they play for a head coach and staff that will be gone next year, or the year after? Everyone knows that Snyder will fire any coach who is not successfull within 2 years. Players get a very "so what?" attitude wherein they don't feel they need to do what their coach tells them because they know he won't be around in the long run, whereas they probably will.
Teams are built from the ground up, starting with a coaching staff that does not have the sword of damocles hanging over them after every game. Teams are built as coaches have time to assemble and draft young players and mold them to their way of thinking and playing. Right now the Skins are nothing but an assemblage of high-price free agents who are past being coached and are no more attached to the Skins and its coach than they would be to any team who was paying their salary.
The redskins need to be gutted of high-price free agents. Gibbs needs to be given 5 years to build a team from drafts and trades for young, talented athletes with potential (not superstars who have already hit their peak). Players who can be taught by a hall of fame coach. Players who will learn the Gibbs system. Gibbs needs time to earn the trust and respect of his players, and convince them to play for him. But unfortunately, he won't get that.
The day I heard Gibbs came out of retirement to coach for Snyder I felt sick. Because Gibbs doesn't deserve what's coming. What's coming is Gibbs will be out of the job after 2 years. These players won't play for him because they just don't care about anything but themselves. They didn't play for Norv, they didn't play for Marty. They sure as hell didn't play for Steve "Who needs an O-line?" Spurrier and Marvin Lewis. Why should they play for Joe? Where do they get that from? Snyder. His selfish, impatient attitude sets the tone for the entire organization- and no coach, not even a hall of famer, can coach a team out of that.

Brunell is not the long term answer. Patrick must learn now or later. The blocking scheme is what is hurting Portis. Block a man and let Portis decide where to go. No waiting for a counter trey...The WR's are fine. The defense is much better but it is still early. They need to get yonger in key positions and having really only one pick in the draft really hurts.

riv4...First off welcome...glad to have you here.
You are very much like me (in your first post) my first post I was upset with the team as well (after the Dallas loss last year) Your right on with most of your post, however Gibbs is the one guy DS will not mess with. Yes I agree the team needs some stability and Gibbs will provide that. Yes these high priced FA's will not be here if they dodn't produce, we will take some serious cap hits but I believe Gibbs will take a player making nothing who'll listen to him, over a high priced guy who doesn't produce and won't get with the system...hang in there better days are ahead!!
