mark maske's pick

Post by tnathan »

says mark maske in the post:

Redskins at New York Giants
In his first coaching go-around with the Redskins, Joe Gibbs was 6-7 against the Giants in the Meadowlands, including a 17-0 loss in the NFC Championship game that ended the team's 1986 season. Gibbs went 4-0 at Giants Stadium against Giants teams coached by Ray Perkins and Ray Handley before and after the tenure of Bill Parcells, but was 2-7 there against Parcells-coached Giants teams.

But these are the Giants of Tom Coughlin, not the Giants of Bill Parcells. These Giants are in disarray and, although they do have some offensive weapons to give the Redskins problems, their shortcomings on the offensive line and the defensive backfield are glaring. It's difficult to say that any team coming off a 5-11 season should win a game on the road, but the Redskins should win this game. Any NFC East team that loses to the Giants this season will feel like it lost ground to the other teams in the division, and the Redskins could win this game and still not know if they're any good.

I think he's right that the skins should win, as i think we all do. he also makes an astute point:
the Redskins could win this game and still not know if they're any good.

when will we know? week 3, cowboys.

I mean come on...

I know its early but we're not playing against college teams, this isn't the preseason. We beat a NFL team. We beat a team with a roster of the best people in the country who can play football. The worst don't make it to the NFL, the mediocre don't make it to the NFL. The best make it to the NFL. I know it wasn' the Pats or the Colts but we beat a professional team soundly. Last year that would have been a loss or a tuff win.

We are good, thats not a question. Will we make the playoffs, thats a question. Will me go 10-6, thats a question. But as far as this being a good team, a vastly improved team, a well coached team, a disciplined team, those questions have been answered.

right, but we're not trying to figure out if they're good compared to a high school team. it's compared to other, competetive nfl teams. i think all he's saying, and i agree, is that even at a possible 2-0, we still won't have any clue if the redskins can hope to beat a green bay or philadelphia, because they won't have been tested against a true contender yet. like i said before, it seems to me that the cowboys are the first real test.

I agree. The girls will be the first true test. That said, a loss in that game, as long as it's hard fought and close, doesn't necessarily mean were not where we need to be, it just means were not where most of us would like to be. I say "beat the Pukes at home"! :)
God bless our troops and Joe Gibbs.
We'll miss you, Joe.

I do agree with you all, but I think I just didn't like the "good" part. I think regardless of our record we'll be a good team. Maybe Im partial because being a fan I can see the stark contrast from last season.

If we get beat by a better team, than thats fine. But we won't be beating ourselves. I think there'll always be someone better, but that won't make us not good.

i agree with that... good attitude to have. no doubt, they will not beat themselves, and no question they're already better than before.

Here are some other national-type picks:

GERRY DULAC, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

On his first carry with his new team, Clinton Portis ran 64 yards for a touchdown, a welcome-back present for Joe Gibbs in his first game with his old team. Washington's 16-10 victory against Tampa Bay was victory No. 500 for the franchise, and Gibbs has been responsible for 25 percent of those wins (125-60). Tom Coughlin, making a return to the team where he formerly was an assistant coach, did not have as much good fortune in his first game. The Giants were embarrassed by the Eagles, 31-17, with the lone bright spot being Tiki Barber's 72-yard touchdown run. Other than that, the Giants were about as entertaining as a lost episode of "Three's Company."

Prediction: Redskins, 17-16.

DAVE GOLDBERG, Associated Press:

Tom Coughlin's silly fines have the Giants angry. They take it out on the Redskins.

GIANTS, 19-17

:hmm: Why would we use that team in Texas as a measuring stick as to weather we are a good team or not ....they aren't Our first test is weeks away but like CLL said everybody we play are professionals they have to come up to our level they can't face us thinking they are facing the Skins of the last 5-6 years this is a real team they have to face

Tom Coughlin's silly fines have the Giants angry. They take it out on the Redskins.

Some guys on that team will not play for Coughlin until they understand him and that will take some time.
Mark Brunell ( I can't say he hated him...because I don't know) let's just say he never liked him. This week was the first time in years that I've heard anything positive come from Burnell about Coughlin. Personally I think Coughlin being in NY help get Mark here to Washington :?
We are good, thats not a question. Will we make the playoffs, thats a question. Will me go 10-6, thats a question. But as far as this being a good team, a vastly improved team, a well coached team, a disciplined team, those questions have been answered.

Yeah we're Good to be 1 game deep into the regular season but we'll get better \:D/
Will we make the playoffs ?...as long long as we win the games we should and pull out a few late in the close ones
:?: 10-6 :?: doesn't matter if we make it to the post-season but I could see 10-6
The rest I agree ...YES,YES,YES, and YES even if there has been only one game played

honestly guys.... were not gonna get much respect from the media... or know how good we are, until we play the Eagles... and then we have to beat them..... until then... we're always gonna hear the other team had an excuse....

If we have a good record by November 21... and then beat Philly in Philly... then at that time we'll know whether or not this team is playoff calibur or not...

Wow. All this agita.
Listen, kids. Forget "measuring sticks" and 'real teams'. Every single game has its own set of intangibles (i.e. Parcells not wanting to lose to Gibbs, Trotter wanting to prove the Redskins made a mistake), real or imagined. The media does most of the legwork for this type of pregame hype; that's where you get the term "bulletin-board material" from.
The bottom line is the same. Sound coaching, and a team full of players that buy into it, plus limited penalties and a little luck = "W".
You can throw in all the little things you want. "Oh, Barrow wants to show up his old team." "Micheal Strahan pulled an ass muscle in practice." "Arrington's OTHER knee went this week."
That's good for manipulating the point spread, but the mark of a good team is overcoming these adversities, and coming to play.
I believe we have such a team.
I do not believe that any anger the Giants may have for their HC will make a lick of a difference. They'll play their game, and we'll play ours. The winner will be (better write this down, guys, it's big !) the team with the most points at the end of the game.
"Sit back and watch the Redskins.
SOMETHING MAGICAL IS ABOUT TO BEGIN!"

if we spank the Cowboys on MNF for the whole world to see, and i mean SPANK them, then we should get some respect.

I think if we are 6-0 or 5-1 going into our bye and then we come out and beat the Pack we will get some respect!

This Giant game scares me.

Our secondary was not tested last week. After Galloway went down the game was over in my opinion. The Giant receivers have always given our corners fits. Let's not forget Mr. Shocke either.

I think it's way to early to judge our team. That's the same mistake we all made last year. Our passing offense needs a great deal of improvement. I'm not impressed with Brunnell yet. We'll know by game 8.
