Sean Taylors benching.

I can't get the Times link, but the headline seems to indicate that Sean Taylor not starting was more of a discipline thing than an injury. Anyone have the inside scoop on this?

I heard an interview with Greg Williams and he said specifically that because Taylor missed some practice time early in the week with an illness that Lott was practicing with the first team and that was the main reason. He also mentioned that they saw some things on film that made them think the Bucs would take advantage of Taylor's inexperience.

On the play that Galloway got hurt (and fortunately dropped the ball) he had completely beaten Taylor. Just an observation.

I wouldn't worry, the post game show on 980 after the game Bram Winestien said that Portis was consoling Taylor about not starting the game. I think Gibbs and Williams were sending a message, your a redskin, you need to act like a redskin in order to play. I think he got the message and hopefully won't be a problem the rest of the season.

Let's not act like the media and blow this out of proportion. He's a rookie and didn't start in the preseason so what's the big deal. He was sick most of last week also. If there is a discipline issue, it will be taken care of internally.

I agree, lets not overreact about this ..Sean is maturing ..It takes time, Coach Gibbs is bring him along slowly...Like Fred Smoot said in todays wash times......"Hey even Michael Vick sat his first year".......Sean will be fine.....In the meantime Andre lott is deveopling into one heck of football player.......Its a win/win for our Skins....Look at the NE PATRIOTS.....belichek uses about 18 players every game, confusing the pants off most qb's with his multiple packages.....Having Lott , Bowen and Taylor all playing in diffrent packages and in diffrent positions will really create problems for people....I LOVE IT

I just think the boy was sick. Also according skins.com he may not start again. He's not in every defensive package yet and if they start a different package, it may not include him right off the bat.

I agree with the above message. I also feel that it is a great lesson and hat it was handled very well internally and with the media to not let it get out of proportion.

The message to all players, nobody receives special treatment in the =team=.

I, for one, like it that Taylor didn't start. Whether he was ill and couldn't practice or whether it was a discipline issue, it sends the right message to the players: "If you don't step up and be a 'team player', you won't play . . . no matter how good you (or everyone else) thinks you are."

Seems to me Coach Williams looks for matchups and developing well planned schemes and Taylor wasn't eady for either. He got beat by Galloway and hopefully he learn from his mistake(s). My guess is Taylor will eat Shockey up on Sunday.

It did look like Portis was on the sideline consoling Taylor at the beginning of the game. At least that's the way the announcers phrased it. Struck me as kind of odd...

i think it was a little what you guys said about missing pactice and also maybe not being 100% but i'm sure he will play ALOT the week against the N.Y. GIANTS !!

Sitting Taylor for not being experienced is stupid IMO. The only way to get experienced is to play. Taylor is not a QB, the sitting the first year stuff doesnt fly.

If in fact it is a dicipline issue, I think Gibbs did the right thing.

Of course, knowing the media (which always blows things out of wack in Philly) it probably was because of sickness.

Sean Taylor was my favorite college football player... so I have a keen interest in him... even though he is a fricken Redskin. When you guys drafted him I wanted to puke. lol. :lol:

Guys, you are all acting like Taylor was benched, but the fact is, he just didn't start. He got plenty of action in the game. I'm sure if one of the packages that features Taylor was planned for the opening, he would've started.

Where is the proof of some kind of discipline problem? On this board is the only place I've heard it, but it is being touted as fact here.

Everything I have read about it states that Taylor was benched because he missed some meetings and practices. I do not know if he missed them due to illness( thus making collinsworth correct) or if it was some other occurance (hangover maybe?). I wouldnt worry, the kid is a freak. He caused a fumble while he was in. It wasn't ruled a fumble but it sure looked like one to me.

I disagree completely with point number 1. Practice gives players the experience with the speed and dimensions of the game which allows them to be ready on Sundays during the fall. Remember, lack of experience can mean that he hasn't got a firm grip on the defensive scheme, that he's prone to getting beat deep, and that he needs more time to soak in the types of looks he'll be getting from opposing offenses.

Those are just three cases where it wouldn't be stupid to sit someone out and have them practice in the meantime--it's the only rational thing you could do. That's why coaches get bashed for starting younger players when those younger guys get beat 3 times on the same play. More practice time solidifies their ability to be able to get in-game experience.

As for Sean Taylor, I think he might be a bit prone to getting beat deep, but it's not so bad that I would bench him for it. It's a new system for everyone, anyway. I say, he didn't start? Okay. He played? Great. Whatever Williams and Gibbs want, that's what I want--I'm not watching this guy during the week like they are.

This coming from a canes fan, I'm sure they will do what is best, benching taylor could be the best thing for him right now.

I too am curious where the discipline rumors are coming from. All I heard was that he was sick so he missed some valuable practice time and therefor he did not start. Am I missing something?

I heard on AM980's post came show(The Fifth Quarter) and again on Redskins Overtime (AM980 with Frank Herzog) he had been sick on Monday but also missed a meeting sometime during the week as the reason why he didn't start but there has been anything in writing that I could find. As it stands now he may not start this week either....

Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor's role remained in flux yesterday as the reason for his benching Sunday became clear.
Taylor didn't start in the 16-10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite dominating much of the preseason. A team source said the rookie's activity was trimmed because he hadn't appeared as focused or effective in practice recently.
It remained unclear whether Taylor, the draft's fifth selection overall, would regain his starting role this weekend against the New York Giants.

In a five-game preseason, Taylor made three interceptions, forced two fumbles and generally sent out notice that quarterbacks and receivers had better account for him. After being ill and missing meeting time last week, Taylor didn't start and played less than expected in the season-opening victory over Tampa Bay.

Taylor could be, and perhaps should be, a bigger factor when the Redskins visit the Giants on Sunday. He's a potential counter to Shockey, though the tight end seems to think Taylor will be used in grander fashion.

"They drafted him because he's a playmaker," Shockey said. "They didn't draft him to match up with tight ends, I'll tell you that."
