NO! NO!

Post by Smithian »

Defensive end Regan Upshaw, cornerback Rashad Bauman and running back Sultan McCullough were among the final cuts on Sunday as the Redskins reduced their roster to 53 players.
Running back John Simon was placed on injured reserve with a left shoulder injury.

Excluding Simon, the Redskins released 22 players in all on Sunday. The following players were also waived:

Rashad Bauman

Fred Baxter, TE
Ryan Boschetti, DT
Rufus Brown, CB
Sean Dillard, WR
Dameane Douglas, WR
Pita Elisara, OL
Bill Ferrario, OL
Gibran Hamdan, QB
Cedric Killings, DT
Ola Kimrin, K
Ben Nowland, OL
Gari Scott, WR
Marcus Spriggs, OL
Leonard Stephens, TE
Daryl Terrell, OL
Garnell Wilds, CB
Jafar Williams, WR
Darrell Wright, DE

In addition, linebacker Chris Clemons was waived with an injury settlement.

Upshaw was perhaps the most notable name on the list. The eight-year NFL veteran played one season in Washington, starting eight games at right defensive end last year and recording 22 tackles and one sack. He had 34.5 career sacks entering this season.

At defensive end, the Redskins have veterans Renaldo Wynn and Phillip Daniels. Ron Warner and Demetric Evans, both of whom recorded sacks in Friday's preseason finale against Atlanta, will round out the team's defensive ends.

Second-year player Ade Jimoh beat out Bauman, a 2002 third-round draft pick, and undrafted rookies Garnell Wilds and Rufus Brown for the Redskins' fourth cornerback spot. In two NFL seasons, Bauman has appeared in 27 games, mostly as a reserve, with two starts. He recorded two interceptions last season.

McCullough was a 2003 undrafted rookie free agent who made the Redskins' squad last season but played in only one game. He hoped to stick on this year's team, but with Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright, McCullough was apparently caught in a numbers game.

For the preseason, McCullough rushed for 212 yards on 61 carries, a 3.4 yards-per-carry average, and one touchdown. He also recorded 9 catches for 52 yards.

Simon played in three preseason games, missing the last two due to the shoulder injury. For the preseason, Simon rushed for 58 yards on 17 carries and caught six passes for 56 yards.

On Monday, the Redskins can assign eight players to the team's practice squad. Those players can practice with the team each week but would have to be signed to the 53-man roster to play in a regular-season game.

Some interesting names on that list. Its a shame that some have to go , but Its a business.
I have travelled the net and found the Redskins promise land. This is, by far, the best site out there for Redskins/NFL News, Notes, Opinions, and so much more.

I'm a bit nervous about Jimoh being the #4 CB myself.. but don't forget there may be some more fallout in the next couple of days with potentially picking up other teams' cuts, practice squad signings (Rufus Brown, anyone?), etc...

I surprised that Elisara and Boschetti are on this list ...I'm also surprised Ryan Clark and Ade Jimoh aren't.. but this is just to meet the league mandated deadline I'm sure there will be more additions and subtractions in the coming days
Gibbs knows what he's doing so I'll just wait and see what happens

Ray Brown?

Post by welch »

Does this mean that Ray Brown, the last of the Hogs, made the 53?

We've seen the cuts, the negative list, but I haven;t gone over to read the positive, made the team, list.

But Ray Brown, a genuine Hog...

You better believe Ray Brown is on the team, Welch.
Out with the old, in with the older. :)
He'll be a fine stop-gap. I'm thrilled to have him back. Who better than Ray Brown to keep that line together ? He knows everything. Plus, you really don't want to have one of Joe's old players out there in free agency. You can bet he'd be signed and waived at least 12 times this year by teams trying to get the interior workings of the Bibbs system down pat.
As if there wasn't an entire library of tape on him, anyway. :)

Sultan's Pissed:
McCullough clearly wasn't happy as he arrived at Redskins Park to turn in his play book. He said he had a dream that he made the team, but he awoke to a telephone message from running backs coach Ernest Byner informing him that reality would be different -- that McCullough at best might end up on the practice squad.

"I don't want to be on the practice squad, honesty," said McCullough, who made the roster last year but only played in one game. "I think I'm good enough to be on the roster. To me, it's like a slap in the face."

Wow, what a crappy way to end the dream. I always have good dreams like that but they're always cut short by my alarm clock.

Then you didn't see Friday's game. He was aggressive and consistent. He played really, really well.

I'm surprised to see Upshaw go. He had a good camp. But "penalties" is his middle name.

I think Garnell Wilds, Rufus Brown, Gibran Hamdan, and Ryan Boschetti will be on our practice squad.

I thought Upshaw was a bad pick-up last year ...old, slow, bad knees did not make sense to me.

Buaman is certainly better than Ade ... I think Wilds has a much better upside with some potential ..... BUT JIMOH???

Now we will see who clears "waivers" to make our practice squad.

I suggest that the Rock put his weight back on so he can be our go-to fullback. Dropping the 20 lbs. has taken some of the power out of his game. I'm sure Gibbs learned from the mistake he made in releasing Gerald Riggs and not having a true fullback for an entire season and how bad we were in the red-zone that year. We blew alot of 3rd and 2's and goal line conversions.

I feel really bad for Sultan. He did an outstanding job last week and also against the dolphins. I am really surprised he was cut even though we have good depth in running back. He plays very well...I think he will be picked up and SHOULD be picked up!
Anyone think Miami is interested?

Exactly what I think. Ray Brown knows what it means to be a Redskin, and a Hog, at that!

Three names on that list surprised me: Reagan Upshaw, Bauman, and Rufus Brown. All three D players. Gregg Williams is really shaking things up. He wants only young fast guys that will be around for several years to come. He is building a D that will be stifling in the next year or two. Give us one more year, and we will be the top D in the league.

I can not believe that Jimoh made this team. Gibbs and Williams must see something that I havent. This guy really stunk it up last year and hasnt shown me much in preseason. But hey...I trust our coaches.

I still don't understand Upshaw being cut, I think the plan was to bring both corners back for the practice squad but Rashad was signed to Cinn active roster. We did get Rufus back though
