Stop the Talk and get the Job done

Post by Skins2WinITall »

I am tired of hearing about how good the skins are going to be every year. They again were the 04 Summerbowl champs by aquiring Portis and Brunell, but as we have seen in the past big names don't equal big numbers. This year I am not buying into the Gibb's hype. I want to see the skins succeed this season but have been crushed too many years in a row to believe the hype. Anyone else feeling this way?

Sorta, but Gibbs in the mix makes me much more hopeful. Having watched them for 35 years, you tend to take the good with the bad - we just have had our share of bad since Gibbs left. Yes you have to not play too much into the hype, but hey, every year we have the potential to do well and this year is no different. We just have a coach who has done it before and can do it again.

So, temper the Superbowl enthusiasm a bit, but a winning record is not out of the question.

Gotta have hope Skins2WinItall - sorta like your name.

I feel weird because since I've been watching the RedSkins....they've pretty much sucked. I believed the hype, and got let down every year, cept in 2001 I believe when Marty picked it up towards the end. Yet, I still have a glimmer of hope in my heart with Gibbs even though I never saw him coach. Then on the flipside I dread that if Gibbs can't do it, who possibly could?

I feel better about this season than i have about any in the past few years, Yes, Its because of Joe Gibbs return, Im not saying we are going to be super bowl contenders, But I think we have a real shot at making the playoffs, Because I know as I think most of us do that coach Gibbs is a great coach, We do have a very good coaching staff now, And that will lead to a big improvement.. They will get the most out of our players.. HTTR

i'm not one to predict a Superbowl appearance this year other than in overly optimistic jokes/rants.

Having said that I lived through and watched Joe dominate the NFC many times. He turned the REDSKINS into a more important story in the post than Reagan administration.

Joe also kicked nascar in the cup and probably would wildly succeed trying to wrestle a twinkie from Oprah Winfrey.

My point is the man WINS. I think 'Stop the Talk and get the Job done' are strong words for the return of a legend before his first game. We all feel horrible about the past season disappiontment but I refuse to not give JOE GIBBS the hype he deserves because of the failures of the past few loser coaches.

Holla!

It has been posted on other threads, but it bears worth repeating.

With all the player movement around the league, it is difficult to build any team continuity year after year. So coaching and hiring a good staff is vital to a sound FB team.

That's why I was so against hiring ROOKIE NEOPHITE coaches like SS.

So you take the current staff (with who knows how much ungodly amount of experience they have collectively) and provide them with a pretty good core of players and add some solid veterans to fortify the coaching phylosophy... that's a recepie for success.

At worst I predict a much more consistent, thoughtful team that should have a winning record.

You see, with the inept staff we had last year, we lost some very close games... now with a better coaching and game planning those close ones WILL turn into victories IMHO.

Welcome to the board, SO. CAL. SKIN DUDE.

PLEASE do not read into the preseason anymore! Gibbs is smart enough not to throw his real game plans into a meaningless event.

Believe the hype SkinstoWinitAll...Gibbs will have the Skins ready to play each and every week!

yes i think we are all tried of the losing wasy around here but JOE GIBBS is "DIFFERENT". none of our previous coaches have accomlished what gibbs in and out of football. nascar champ and three time superbowl champions !!! he has most of the puzzle in place with a draft here a free agent there we will be heading the right direction with JOE GIBBS at the head coaching postion.(i try to look at it this way .500 will be the first step !! anything over that is icing on the cake.REDSKINZ4EVER !!!

Don't worry. After the Skins pound the Bucs in week 1, you will believe.

You mustn't read anything into the preseason -- good or bad -- because the smart coaches use the preseason to evaluate individuals, not teams. Do you think Belichick is worried that the Pats have looked awful at times this preseason? No.

While the Skins may not have very much depth at several positions, their starting talent from top to bottom is every bit as good as any of the "top" teams. Do they have weaknesses? Of course. But every team in this day and age has weakenesses that they must overcome. Which is why the coaching usually makes the difference. And boy do the Skins have coaching.

The biggest obstacle to making the playoffs will be teaching the players how to use the offensive and defensive schemes. If they catch on quickly, then the playoffs are easily in reach. If they don't, it will be a struggle.

Predicting how a team will perform before the season starts is nearly impossible. But, you can find some solace in the fact that this team has enough player and coaching talent to make a 10 or 11 win season a reality.

I understand the caution -- it's easy to think that Gibbs' return is another smokescreen disguising a flawed team with no hope. But, I think after week 1, you will understand how different this year will be.

If our performance in Osaka tought us anything, it's that preseason is about as important as fashion to a Dirtbag.

Is Joe Gibbs a mirage?

No. He coaches. Very few ever have coached as well as Gibbs.

Gibbs is no genius, and will tell you so. (Bill Walsh was a genius, and he will tell you so...).

That means no miracles...just that we are warrented in believing that the team will play better under Gibbs. That's big, as NC43 says.

I am a Redskins fan because it is in my blood...I have seen them good, bad, worse than bad, Spurrier-bad, and also dazzlingly one-sided (I mean the Otto / Sonny / Charlie Taylor / Bobby Mitchell / Jerry Smith all-time passing teams), and, maybe four or five times, the all-out best team in the NFL.

People around here have held on through the bad times; now the old coaches are back. Yes, they really were that much better than other NFL coaching staffs. Just wait...and it won;t be long.

What a good post.

This coaching staff has been going about the 2004 pre-season doing what they want to... evaluating talent and trying to establish some depth. There's very little consideration to appearances or record... just 'getting in some practice'.

Typical Gibbs ball.
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

...and you know what ? You're Gibbs favorite type of fan. You still show up and make noise, but you're not overly hyped.
I'm all for giving the man some time to make this team his own again. There's a lot of work to do yet before we start aiming at the Eagles.
We need to aim for the Bucs first. Never look past a game. Play fundamental football, and don't get all wacky with audibles. Do your check-offs. If nobody's around, don't be afraid to dump it off or throw it away. Mind the footwork, the playclock and the signal calling.
All of these things, and many more, are listed on Joe's business card. That's what I want, more than anything else. I don't necessarily need a SuperBowl win this year to consider his first year back a success. I'd settle for some solid football that isn't embarrassing to watch or root for.

I'm estatic about the return of Joe Gibbs. I think he will bring us back to one of the NFL elite teams. That being said, it won't be this year. I would be happy with an 8-8 record. I wouldn't presume to speak for the man, but I would imagine that Gibbs himself doesn't think he's anywhere near or will get to the upper echelons this year.
The man is laying a foundation for the future. While I enjoy their enthusiasm for the team, I do think many people are way too optimistic for this year. We're not there yet. We won't be there next year, although we will be much better. I would say that by year 3, Joe Gibbs will have us knocking on the door. Joe is setting us up for success for a long time. It takes time.
Listen to what kind of players he's looking for. Core Redskins. He'll build his team and to be honest, I don't think that free agency will hurt him all that much. I really believe that some players will take less to stay with the man. He's looking for players who buy into his system and want to be Redskins. This type of unity takes time, but Joe will get us there.
As God as my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.

All I know is that Coach Gibbs is back!!!!!

Thats not all.....we got Coach Williams too; a very good defensive coach.

We also got perhaps the best offensive line coach in history.....Coach Bugel.

We got Don Breux or however you spell his name. He's really good at designing plays and stuff like that.

ITS NOT JUST COACH GIBBS

If you want to be worried on how we play this season or the next season or the season after the next then you go right ahead. I'm gonna be chillin' on my lazy boy drinking some beer.
