Great move!

We've exercised Daron Payne’s fifth-year contract option.

So at some point we're going to have to pay one of these guys. Allen or Payne. Which one gets the big $$ extension to stay here or does either?

Yeah, that's the sad reality. I'd be shocked if we let both of them go, though. One at most gets to free agency, IMHO.

It's hard to say which of the two DTs have been better for us -- given their roles it can be tough to judge. I know that Allen is considered a leader on the team, but Payne had a hell of a year last year, too.

I don't know how best to lay out the contract situation we have on the defensive line. It's basically one banger coming up each year for the next four years, starting with Allen. How do you deal with that? I think we end up extending Allen. Then maybe let Payne hit FA next year, because I think we have to keep Sweat, and of course Young has the makings of a franchise player.

The real question for me is whether our FO can pull off keeping all four. It seems inevitable that they can't, but maybe it's not as impossible as I think it is.

Yeah you're right about this being a problem for the next four years. Its such a bummer that we probably can't afford to keep all of them. I don't pretend to know what makes most sense financially, but I'd really like to see the team start extending some of these guys. It seems like we constantly let them get to the final contract year, and the player is always like "there is no way I'm signing anything now. Either franchise tag or let me hit FA."
