The Broncos and Washington Redskins have agreed to terms on a trade that would send quarterback Case Keenum to Washington, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via sources informed of the situation.
Denver will get a sixth-round pick and Washington will get a seventh-rounder plus Keenum, Rapoport added.

Re: Keenum
Well, that's a cheap solution. Maybe they're expecting Alex Smith back this season after all.

WOW - how exciting is this - Case Keenum

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I'm glad you're excited. Maybe they are preparing for the possibility that the QB prospect they want in this draft won't be there. Or maybe he will be there and they don't want to throw him to the wolves this season.SkinsJock wrote:WOW - how exciting is this - Case Keenum
They gave up a 6th round pick in next year's draft for someone who has started 54 games and won some of them, including a playoff game against New Orleans.
Oh, and his career record is two games under .500 which is better than Kirk Cousins three games under .500 record.
So, eyeroll aside, what is it you expect the team to do?

I AM STOKED FOR CASE!!!!
lol. No seriously, this moves hurts my bones. I agree with what BGF just wrote, but still my bones are hurting.
I'm going to reserve judgement on this move though for a few weeks. If they make some other moves in FA or the draft, it might look better than it does now. If the strategy though is just: we're going into 2019 with either Colt or Case Keenum as our starter. Well, damn. I understand their choices may be limited. But still. Damn.

Re: Keenum
Bruce Allen really screwed the Skins by giving Alex Smith a fully guaranteed injury contract. He had to know there was a higher than normal risk of Smith getting injured behind the likes of Shaun Lauvao. Pass blocking has never been the strength of that line, Trent Williams excepted. I don't think it's reasonable to expect Skins fans to like the situation but Keenum has taken a team to the conference championship game in the last few years which is further than the Redskins have been in any of Dan Snyder's twenty years as team owner. He's about the best option they had for the price they paid, which was next to nothing. His salary is lower than a high draft rookie contract since Denver is picking up half of it.riggofan wrote:I AM STOKED FOR CASE!!!!

I still hope, as I am sure others do, that the plan is to draft a QB but knowing how many holes the team has and knowing they can't all be fixed this off-season I wouldn't want to throw a rookie QB into that situation this season.
We also know from experience that Colt will never play 16 games. They needed to get an experienced 2nd QB. Or 1st QB. Or whatever he ends up being.

Re: Keenum
Funny you mention that. I was just thinking about that play this morning. Specifically whichever fourth string backup running back off the street it was who let those players come in untouched on Alex Smith. What a debacle. I'd be extremely bitter about that if I was Alex.Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:Bruce Allen really screwed the Skins by giving Alex Smith a fully guaranteed injury contract. Yeah this is where I am exactly. I'll be a lot happier to have Case Keenum here this year if we've drafted and we're grooming a young QB.Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:I still hope, as I am sure others do, that the plan is to draft a QB but knowing how many holes the team has and knowing they can't all be fixed this off-season I wouldn't want to throw a rookie QB into that situation this season.

I still think we grab a QB in the higher rounds and let someone groom him for a year.
Can we assume Case is the new starter?
Re: Keenum
^^^^ just appeared right before I posted this.
Don't think it affects the ORDER at all this year. May affect HOW we pick anyway.
How might it impact this draft?
Maybe we don't reach for a QB now where before we may have. Just throwing a possibility out there.

The transaction could easily impact how we draft this year since we just acquired a starting NFL quarterback.Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:It doesn't. They exchanged 2020 picks, not 2019 picks.El Mexican wrote:Ay ay ay. Here we go again...

I still think they grab Lock or whoever they have their eye on if he's on the board when they pick. They know Colt and Case are not the future of the organization.El Mexican wrote:I meant this year's draft. How does this impact our draft order?Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:It doesn't. I also think there will be a QB competition in camp although Jay Gruden loves him some Colt. It's pretty clear Case is the better QB of the two but Colt knows the system. I'm not sure that matters since there will be a lot of changes on offense.

Re: Keenum
Not a terrible move, I'm assuming he will compete with Colt. Josh Johnson is not the answer!! I'm hoping the Skins will kick the can down the road
to 2020 on drafting a QB... Alex situation will be more clearer and the QB draft pool much deeper!

It seems to me that this is a nothing move other than to blow smoke up the fans posteriors again. Keenum is not better than McCoy. He just had better surroundings to work with.

I don't blame you for that conclusion, but I didn't get that vibe from the organization. They didn't make this move with a bunch of splash trying to sell the fans that they've solved the QB problem. Its a veteran guy at a reasonable one year rental price to compete with Colt.aswas71788 wrote:It seems to me that this is a nothing move other than to blow smoke up the fans posteriors again. Not sure if Keenum or McCoy is the better QB. I would think Colt has the leg up just from being in this offense for so long. But the guy can't stay healthy.

Keenum has ties to the coach in Arizona. My bet is that the Redskins still trade for Rosen and send Keenum and a 2nd or 3rd round draft pick to the Cardinals.

LITERALLY leg up... As in BROKEN leg up! I like Colt, but nah. He had his time to shine and its come and gone. Back-up at best... Hopefully his services arent needed once the season starts, but can help the qb room if we add a youn buck.
I for one am super ok with this. We solved a BIG gaping hole at a $$ We can manage. Paying for Flacco??? Guy just got pushed out by RGIII!!
That left Foles and Teddy. Foles will get a damn good deal $$$$ for HIM AND help the Fecals- I want no part of that. Teddys injury was worse then RGIIIs and he has a similar "to small to play that way" build to him.
Keenum was a better qb then Kirk when we let him walk. Stats aside- one goes to the nfc championship one takes the same team to an early offseason. I warned my vikes friends of how clutch he is at screwing up when it matters.
I was actually all for getting Case last year- but glad we didn't at that dollar amount.
Something to note- the Denver line will make ANYONE look subpar and coaching under Vance was atrocious.
We didnt land Brady... But it was realistically the best stop gap we could muster.. Im with it. Now we arent desperate. A trade can still happen and now we dont have to give up the farm.

Re: Keenum
Keenum is the smartest choice Redskin management could have made: a OK starting QB for only a 6th or 7th round pick, and Denver picks up part of his salary. Rare for me to say that Allen (and his employees) have made a smart move, but, so it is.
However, the Redskins need to draft a good QB, and they are unlikely to find one if they draft in the middle by having finished 8 - 8 again.
Just an experiment, though: how many first round picks by the Redskins have turned into good starting QB's? Of those I remember:
- Jack Scarbath: flop (I heard about Scarbath when his younger brother, Dick, played QB for Maryland)
- Ralph Guglielmi: flop
- Norm Snead: career starter for Redskins and other teams
- Gary Beban: flop. (Strange draft: Rams selected Beban in the seconds round, but Beban refused to sign, so the Rams traded Bebans right to Washington for a first round pick). Vince Lombardi arrived thinking that Beban might be a throwing running back, like Paul Hornung, but Beban lost the half-back job to Larry Brown.)
- Joe Theismann: (traded first round pick to Miami for the rights to Joey T). Among the best the team has ever had.
- Heath Shuler: flop. (Jay Shroeder was a third-round pick, Mark Rypien a sixth round pick, Stan Humphries a sixth round pick)
- Patrick Ramsey: flop

Re: Keenum
Not a bad move by the Skins. We're getting him damn near free: swapping a 6th for a 7th rounder and only paying $3.5 million for a year of service. He'll make more money off the Broncos than the Skins next year.
That said, I think this price reflects how likely he is to be The Answer at QB for us. If we can get journeyman performance — and Redskins fans more than anyone can judge whether someone's giving us a journeyman's performance — I'll be happy.
