Snyder scrambles for new stadium in PG or DC

Intent on keeping the Washington Redskins in Prince George’s County, Maryland Gov. Larry ­Hogan (R) has held a series of private meetings over the past two years with team owner Daniel Snyder and, more recently, has spoken with U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke about acquiring control of federal land for a new stadium.

The upshot was a memorandum of understanding with federal officials that represents the first step toward Maryland getting development rights to a 300-acre parcel of land in Oxon Cove, adjacent to MGM National Harbor, via a “land swap.”

Why not force Dan Snyder to buy his own land and to pay for his own stadium?

Hogan expounded on his efforts Tuesday, explaining that the deal is not final and insisting that Maryland would not contribute financially toward construction of a new stadium.

Farther down, the article suggests that Maryland will end up improving the land and transportation.

25K...not sure where you got that number, there is 25K of the other teams fans alone!!
But I get your point...they definitely need a smaller venue! I don't like this spot, the obvious choice is the site of RFK.

The only thing this team is drawing at the moment is flies. I don't see any ballot initiative involving tax dollars paying for a new stadium passing a vote. What does it say about the team when its owner doesn't have enough faith in its future revenue to foot the bill for a stadium himself? I know what he can do. See if Massengill wants to be the primary sponsor. Is there a bigger douche than Dan Snyder?

Obviously RFK would be the optimal location but that would likely require a team name change since I believe it is still federal land.

It would be a bad loss to use public money for a football stadium. Baseball teams play 80 home games a year, while NHL and NBA teams play 40, and soccer teams play about 18. The Redskins play 8 home games and a couple of pre-season games. If Snyder wants to build a stadium in the District, let him buy the land and pay the architects and builders.

Trouble is local governments won't let Snyder do that — they want exorbitant kickbacks and favors in exchange for permission to do what Snyder could pretty easily do without red tape. Some politicians are using it as an opportunity to grand stand and hold the Skins hostage, e.g., over changing their name.

I think the site of RFK is just begging to be renovated and made the home of the Redskins again. But it makes too much sense to just let Snyder sell FedEx and buy it. Lots of protest among locals there, from what I know. It's rather unlikely to happen.

I agree that using public money for stadiums is a bad idea. Unfortunately for us, there aren't really any practical ways forward for the Redskins to get a stadium without making unholy alliances and deals.

So, the terms require them to play in EffedUp Stadium for the next eight seasons. We can end that new stadium discussion now.
