Just for the hell of it I ran a mock on the 2019 NFL Draft. There aren't many quarterbacks from which to choose. It looks like Tyree Jackson and Justin Herbert will be gone in the top half of the first round. Both the Giants and the Jaguars need a QB and both are far worse teams than the Skins. It doesn't say much that I know nothing about the next several QBs in this draft. 2nd Round Grades: Daniel Jones. Drew Lock. Will Grier. Dwayne Haskins. 3rd Round Grades: Jarrett Stidham. Nate Stanley. That's it for the top 100. There is this Brett Rypien kid out of Boise State who will probably be available as a 7th round pick but that's not what you do if you're looking for a starter. I don't know. I wouldn't trade up for Jackson or Herbert and there are too many other needs to waste a high round pick on a QB who may never see the field.

We're not getting into the top 12 of the 2019 draft like many thought we were before the season - we have to draft a QB in this draft that we can develop into a future starter - there are many QBs that are not drafted in the top 20 who go on to become very good NFL starting QBs

NFL 101: we need to hope that we add players we can not only develop into good NFL players but also that we can keep

we're getting ahead of ourselves - we need to see how this season plays out with Colt as QB - we could be in a better place than we think

we have a lot to overcome but I prefer to look at the positives - just beat the pukes and we'll go from there
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I cannot imagine the thought of Colt McCoy starting next season is going to put any more fans in the seats. I like Colt but no one sees him as the future of the organization. For one thing he's not much younger than Alex Smith.

Could happen, but that would create another problem we've seen before:
the backup becoming more popular than the starting QB (Smith).

So again, it's a tough situation that someone at Redskins Park is analyzing. Maybe.

It's going to be an interesting offseason :]

I feel better - we did NOT lose this game, the refs absolutely made sure we could not win with their very bad officiating

I understand that we are now 6-5 but the fact is the Redskins win loss record is solely based on what the NFL wants to happen

I'm still optimistic that we can still win the NFC East but the officials are not helping us, they are against us

I doubt that many fans think of Colt McCoy as a possible starting QB - he's basically just a good back-up for us - mainly because he's been a part of this system for so long that he could turn in a pretty good showing today despite almost no time to prepare & some really horrendous officiating

We need to draft a future starting QB
AND
we need someone to be our starting QB
AND
we have many other positional needs in order to get better

this is what happens when the guys in charge make the sort of mistakes they've been making here for so many years

hopefully the guys that you indicated the NFL sent to help run things here can straighten things out
otherwise it's back to the mediocre seasons that we've gotten so used to here

If anyone is looking for a positive takeaway from that game we did score more points than we have been scoring. 8-[

Not the best game yesterday. Too many mistakes.

Positives: at least we had one lead change. The first of the season?
Negatives: we haven't won a game were the other team scores first.

Now that I think about it, that last one could be a positive also. Saves a lot of time on weekends.

We "lost" the game but the officiating was atrocious - I normally don't complain about it as in most games the officials while certainly not favoring the Redskins at least they aren't as blatant about the calls as they were in that game

I think that the team did fairly well considering things and especially given that Colt had so little time to prepare for this game

I give the team credit for the effort on the field - Jay Gruden looked as mad as I've ever seen him

we will win the NFC East with that sort of effort in the remaining 5 games

There's no question that they need to draft a QB, man. But if we're picking somewhere around 20-23 next year, its not remotely a lock that you can draft a starting caliber guy there. I don't want to see the team draft the next Nathan Peterman just because we're currently screwed at QB.

Totally agree, welch. We didn't sign Smith at $71 million with a plan of drafting a first round QB in 2019. The FO was looking to win NOW. They rebuilt the defense and signed what they believed was an upper tier starting QB who could carry the team for the next three years at least.
welch wrote:I assume that Smith is done, just as Joey T. was done after the injury. Assume that McCoy starts next season.
Its crazy. Heard 8-10 months before he can even get back on the field. Whether he retires or not, I don't see how the franchise isn't completely screwed on the cap.

Um no. There really aren't. Here are the current starting QB's not drafted in the first round:

Cowboys - Dak
Vikes - Cousins
Pats - Brady
Raiders - Carr
Denver - Case Keenum
Seattle - Wilson

Brady is the oldest one drafted in 2000. So over 18 years of drafts, you have six currently starting in the NFL.

It really was man, totally agree. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but looking back at like the four really terrible calls or non-calls, the team got royally hosed. Awful face mask on Colt. Blatant hold/PI on Docston. Ridiculous helmet to helmet. The team has a right to bitch about that officiating crew for sure.

So we're looking at Colt as a starter for next year? I don't think that's realistic.

So it's either wheeling and dealing through the draft to get an upper level QB or taking the plunge with another QB free agent.

Any interesting options in free agency for next year? How about RGIII?

it's still too early to speculate - we've been looking for better stability at QB for years but the situation is even worse given what happened to Smith

at this time, I'm just hoping we can finish this season well ... looking that far ahead is not a good thing right now

Yeah doesn't seem realistic to me either. I guess he still has six games or whatever to make his case. I'm a fan, so I'll be rooting for him.

Ugh. Shoot me now.

I'm not opposed to trading up for a franchise QB in theory. But does anyone really trust this team to make one of those moves? Draft a guy who is worth it and not give away some ridiculous haul in the process?

Here's an early list of FA QBs for 2019. Don't get too excited!!! :D

Yeah man, its a s***show for sure. I heard someone ask the question the other day: how can you be the GM responsible for McNabb, RG3, Kirk and now Alex Smith? I'm not even saying that this mess is completely Bruce's fault. Alex's injury was the worst possible luck, no way anyone could predict that. But still, how can you be the guy with that track record and continue making decisions for the team?

Personally I just don't think we're drafting our way out of this mess in 2019. Really have to hope that Colt can just be "good enough".

Hey since this thread is about being optimistic, can I just say here how impressed I am with Trey Quinn? That guy is a baller.

Only the Redskins could have this happen to them!! You fail to lock up a franchise QB, then go out and give more $$$ to a franchise QB only to have him get injured!! The fact that we are even discussing the QB positon right now is unbelievable!! Rumors swirling that Snyder is furious with Allen, any discussions of a new QB have to begin with WHO will be making that decision? To allow the current regime to do it would be continuing to treat the symptoms and not the disease!!

I haven't heard that about Snyder/Allen but I hope its true. Honestly I felt like the team was making good progress with building an NFL caliber roster (as compared to previous years). But this QB mess could set them back three years. There's just NO WAY a GM should be able to keep his job with that type of resume.

True, which is why we should also talk about Ernie Grunfeld's head on a platter. Some teams never have this problem.

We could end the season 11-5 and I will still be advocating for getting rid of whomever is responsible for the mess that has been created here - the bad decisions of the past 10 years cannot be excused anymore - "just wait till next year ... " is now "we need to give it 2-3 years ..."

I'm hopeful that we can just end this season by playing well - the reasons for getting rid of Bruce Allen + others has become painfully obvious
I'm optimistic about things getting better here but only if those responsible for this mess are let go at the end of this season .... or sooner

Finishing 9-7 or 10-6 is not good enough PLUS that is only happening if we get lucky - we're lucky to be 6-5

That's one sad list, my friend. Given the historical prestige of the organization, inserting
one of those guys as the new starting QB in 2019 will be a hard sell with the fan base. And it should be.

My foresight tells me we'll give up a treasure trove of picks and/or respectable players
to claw up in the draft and snatch a solid QB.

No one expected or wished for Alex's terrible injury, but as many previous posters
have said, there's someone in the organization that prepares to avoid such catastrophe. He's incompetent, to say the least.

OP: Sorry if this "optimistic thread" was turned into the exact opposite of what was intended.
