Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
Dan Steinberg nails up pretty much everything I feel about this sh***y situation.
For Redskins, Kirk Cousins remains a franchise quarterback at arm’s length

Maybe the team is thinking the transition tag is an option next year. Personally I'm just tired of this nonsense. Sit him on the bench and start Sudfeld, so we can at least have the illusion of seeing a guy play for the team. I don't see the point.

Still, Cousins, his agent, Bruce Allen, his front office, and everyone else involved in this multi-year contract saga have managed to create one of the least-embraceable franchise quarterbacks in the history of franchise quarterbacks. Congrats?
Cousins exists on a perennial year-to-year contract. He displays as much unprompted affection to Washington as does Arya to House Frey. His front office trusts him so much that it keeps getting sort-of-but-not-really-close to a deal. He spends four months playing football, and eight months turning Washington sports-radio into Accounting Talk. He’s the quarterback Washington has sought for a generation, yet we spend every summer wondering whether it will be his last with the Redskins. His nickname might as well be Tag. It’s better than Hashtag, but not by much.
That exactly. I can't fault Cousins trying to make the most of his particular situation, but it still sucks for any of us who care about the team.I just don’t know how you ask a fanbase to wrap its arms around a star who always seems to have one foot out the door. And it’s not too early to start dreading next January, when our third round of the Cousins Contract Calypso figures to begin.

Ridiculous spin from Bruce. I don't see what there is to "buy into".SkinsJock wrote:we're almost there- and the spin from the FO begins ... what a joke - there will be many here that will buy into it

it's only just beginning - by the time the season rolls around, there will be many predicting a chance at the playoffs
hooray! - another 8-8 or 9-7 season, even more important, our 3rd in a row - WTF - this franchise is a huge mess with no plan for the future
this franchise has no hope for success under this owner - the only players we can get or keep are those that are only here for the $

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
Since Cousins never responded with a counter offer it wasn't about money. He didn't respect the FO enough to negotiate. He's gone, he'll be here in flesh but I think he left back when he started that 'how do you like me now' stuff.
Managements job is to fix the problems, to address the issues behind that 'how do you like me now' in-your-face aggression and we see how well they handled that.
Cousins isn't stupid, he has a plan and he's following it. I believe his goal is to be inducted to the HoF and to do he'll have to have a long successful career with a team and a coach, probably who's first name is Sean.

Unnoticed bright spot of this whole fiasco: we'll finally get to see Jay Gruden's hand-picked QB in 2018.

I agree that he is gone next year. No question. The only exception is if they transition tag him and match. Considering SF and CLE have WAY more cap room, that will most likely not happen.oj wrote:Since Cousins never responded with a counter offer it wasn't about money. With respect to the negotiation ---- if I were Cousins I wouldn't have responded to that offer either. It was basically an offer containing all the guaranteed money he will 100% receive in the future. So basically, it was an offer of absolutely nothing --- AT BEST. In fact, it was an offer FOR LESS than he'd be making if he just didn't sign. Literally negative dollars in guarantees when you consider the fact he is already guaranteed $24M and next year will either make: $34M, $28.7M or sign a long term deal with another team for most likely 5 years and (in addition to the $24 he's getting this year) another $60-70M guaranteed (for a total of $84-94M).
WTF would anyone go for that???????? Cousins is no fool but our FO is treating him like one. Before yesterday I was beginning to become upset with Cousins and why a deal hadn't been done. After reading Bruce's ridiculous statement, I now am back to just feeling sorry for Cousins.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

I have no idea if the team will make the playoffs this year or not. Its not really the issue. Not getting a deal done with Kirk doesn't mean they can't or won't make the playoffs. The team is what it is going into this year either way.SkinsJock wrote:it's only just beginning - by the time the season rolls around, there will be many predicting a chance at the playoffs

Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
I wouldn't say that. I believe there's a chance Cousins gets traded..... At this point, if our FO could get a 2nd rounder for him (which they probably could --- with or without an extension on Cousins), I believe they'd consider the deal. Likewise, if a contending team has an injury to a QB, they could trade for Cousins. After all, MIN trade a first Rdr for Bradford. Our FO are complete fools, but they know there is a 99% chance he is out next year and all they'll get is a 3rd for him. If they can get anything more, they will most likely go for it.riggofan wrote:I have no idea if the team will make the playoffs this year or not. Its not really the issue. After all, they just publicly ridiculed him in a written press release and then proceeded to call him "Kurt" to the press. The relationship is done. I already knew this from people who have first-hand relationships with individuals within our FO --- but our FO is classless.

Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
I don't think that's true. The Skins are projected to have $54m in cap space in 2018:markshark84 wrote:I agree that he is gone next year. No question. The only exception is if they transition tag him and match. Considering SF and CLE have WAY more cap room, that will most likely not happen.
JPFinlay:
Those numbers can change going into next year, but its not the WAY more scenario you're describing.Immense speculation points to the 49ers wanting Cousins, especially given the ties between new coach Kyle Shanahan and the Washington quarterback. San Francsico projects to be about $50 million under the 2018 salary cap, meaning they actually have less available money than the Redskins.
I don't know what Cleveland's numbers are, but if he wants to take big $$s to go to Cleveland, good luck with that.

I guess if you're banking on a Teddy Bridgewater injury, there's a chance. Otherwise, you would have to be a dummy (or a Redskins GM) to give up a second round pick for a guy who has already missed your offseason program and you know will be a free agent six months from now.markshark84 wrote:I wouldn't say that. Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
And you realize who we would have to resign (including draft rookies), right? Of that $54M, at least $22M would go to Cousins, with the remaining $32 million being allocated between:riggofan wrote:I don't think that's true. Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
Never say never. This is the NFL. And he may not be an UFA next year --- most likely he won't. If I'm a team like CLE with 3 2nds, BUF with 2 firsts, or SF with 2 2nds and 2 3rds --- I'd consider it if I could come to an agreement with Cousins that he'd come to terms before the end of the season (although that would most likely only happen with SF).riggofan wrote:I guess if you're banking on a Teddy Bridgewater injury, there's a chance. And I honestly don't think Cousins cares that greatly about the $$$$ --- so I don't think CLE is a destination he's willing to strike a deal with.

Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
Trade Cousins. Start McCoy. Rebuild. Not fun, but why should Cousins re-sign with Washington? If he will not re-sign, then it's a season to evaluate Colt McCoy.
Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
It's finally over - we made a mistake in not signing Cousins to a LTD a while back but fortunately the stupid guys in charge didn't make the mistake of signing Cousins to a LTD ... it's time to move on - it's time to find a franchise QB ...
but that's going to be hard because the same stupid guys are still in charge here
at least we don't have to face more than 1 year with Cousins - see ya

Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
I believe the Skins transition tag him next Year, and very likely match the offer. I think this has been the plan all along. This is assuming kc has another good year. I think he is going to have his best year yet, so I see this happening.

Re: PREDICTIONS on What Will Happen with Cousins
No man, this dude is practically gone. Check out what he said yesterday after practice--> http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/2026 ... act-status.
He also says that this time last year was the perfect time to sign him long-term. Now, it does not feel right to him.
So again, he's just counting the days until he's out of here.
The piece is quite long but detailed. He's basically saying it does not feel right to sign with us. He wants to see what's out there."I didn't feel at peace with signing a long-term deal at this juncture," Cousins said after the team's morning walk-through at training camp here Sunday. "I think the freedom that it allows on the other side of this season makes more sense. In the league, there's so much change, so much turnover year after year, I think it makes a lot of sense to re-evaluate where we're at, where the league's at at the end of this season."
