Matt Jones skips OTAs, asks to be released or traded

Post by Irn-Bru »

Oh well. :(

Running back Matt Jones isn't in the Washington Redskins' plans, which is why he hasn't yet attended their voluntary workout sessions -- with no plans on doing so, according to a source. The third-year back would prefer to be released or traded.

The Redskins have no plans to release Jones at this time.

Jones hasn't yet shown up for any of the four sessions and it should come as no surprise that he's not in their plans. That has been evident since the end of the regular season and nothing has changed.

It represents quite a change from one year ago when Jones was the hot story in the spring, with veteran Alfred Morris having left for Dallas. Jones was set to become the Redskins' top running back and worked all offseason on holding the ball more securely and altering his running style, trying to stay lower.

Jones opened the season as the starter, rushing for 460 yards in the first seven games. But he was sidelined by a knee injury, then lost his starting job to undrafted rookie free agent Rob Kelley. Jones was inactive for the final nine games, in part because he was not part of special teams.

During the offseason, coach Jay Gruden has said they had not "written off" Jones, but it has been communicated to the back that he's not in the team's plans. Gruden also has praised Kelley quite often, making it clear he expected the second-year back to improve and, therefore, further distance himself from Jones.

The Redskins then drafted Samaje Perine in the fourth round, giving them something they had hoped Jones would become: a big, powerful back. Jones and Perine both weigh around 230 pounds, but the latter is known more for his strength.

Perine will compete with Kelley for the starting job. The Redskins also have third-down back Chris Thompson. Barring injuries, those are the three backs Washington would keep on the 53-man roster. If the Redskins needed a fourth, as of now it would be Mack Brown because of his ability to play special teams.

It's uncertain how long the Redskins will keep Jones on the roster. If one or two of their backs get hurt, Jones would give them an experienced backup who counts only $788,854 against the salary cap. His name has been mentioned in trade rumors, but with teams knowing where Jones fits on the Redskins' roster, they know eventually he'll be released.

Last week, after the NFL Network reported Jones planned to stay away from the voluntary sessions, Gruden said of his absence, "This is a voluntary deal, as we all know, and I can't force the issue on anybody. So if he's disgruntled in any way, shape or form, it's news to me."

When asked if he expected Jones to appear at the mandatory minicamp next month Gruden said, "He better."

Matt Jones can go piss up a rope. With the new rules there's only one cut, from 90 down to 53, right before the season opener. He can sit on the roster and get fined until then.

It's a tough call for me. On one hand, they failed to trade him and straight up told the guy they don't intend to use him yet they won't let him go. That's a pretty raw deal. On the other hand, he's still being paid so he should at least show up and go through the motions.

Not a good situation.

No way, man. These are "voluntary" OTAs. He's under no obligation to show up, especially if they've indicated they're planning to move on from him. He would be an idiot to go out there and risk injury. I wouldn't be surprised if an injury would be bad for the team also.

I'm disappointed about Matt Jones. Liked his potential as a rookie, not to mention he was a third round pick. He had a big opportunity to take over that position last year.

True, but he's under contract for the next two seasons so I hope he enjoys the fines that come with missing mandatory minicamp and training camp. He's also making a bad impression for any other team that might have even considered giving him a shot. You can only get away with a piss poor attitude and a questionable work ethic if you have exceptional talent. Matt Jones doesn't.

I seriously doubt his skipping voluntary OTAs under his current circumstances has any bearing on other teams that might consider him.

His fumbling and dancing around at the line of scrimmage are a different story. :D

It's too bad.

In baseball, Jones would be considered a "toolsy" player who has not developed to his potential. He has the size, speed, and strength to be something special, but he's a bust. Maybe he will start over and star someplace else, but with the Redskins, he has "been tried and found wanting".

I read today that Jones has changed agents. I wonder if he's changing his approach to his Redskins situation or just preparing himself for his eventual release?
