Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
Jay Gruden just received a vote of confidence from the Washington Redskins moving forward.
According to ESPN's John Keim, Gruden has signed a two-year extension that will keep him with the team through 2020. He is entering year four of his original five year deal this upcoming season.
The Redskins are 21-26 under Gruden since he became the team's head coach 21-26-1 and it now appears he will be at the helm for the forseeable future as the team continues to build itself into an NFC perennial playoff team.

If I'm In Cousins camp, I'm almost demanding that Gruden has an extension. It's also needed in case we trade Cousins away. Good move here.

All though I think Gruden sucks. It's a good sign that our front office is not panicking and showing some commitment.

I don't feel Gruden sucks. He too, is improving his craft.

Easily top half of the league (maybe even top 5) in scheming of offense but likely bottom half in commanding the room and making sideline decisions - IMO.

agreed - and it's not like there were a lot of coaches available or obvious upgradesDarthMonk wrote:Easily top half of the league (maybe even top 5) in scheming of offense but likely bottom half in commanding the room and making sideline decisions - IMO.
a really good call by the FO - the 'extension' is a positive sign and it's not like it's a huge commitment - you get it done or you're gone
this is a good indication to Cousins as well
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I'm not a big Gruden fan but I'm relieved to see the team pick a direction. Hopefully they'll stay the course and get Kirk signed. My dream scenario is for them to sign Kirk and pick up Pyror at WR. Pryor, Doctson, Reed and Crowder would be amazing under Gruden.

Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
This team has 100 problems. Giving the head coach an extension will fix exactly none of them.

That's absolutely false. Continuity and stability will go towards fixing most of the issues with this team.Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:This team has 100 problems. Giving the head coach an extension will fix exactly none of them.

How? The team has major player personnel issues. There are maybe six players on the team who would be hard to replace.Chris Luva Luva wrote:That's absolutely false. Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
By keeping the same coach/philosophy (at least offensively) you can continue to build in one direction. I predict that if Cousins is resigned and the defense is still mediocre the vacancy will look a lot more attractive next offseason. I imagine the DC with whom the Redskins were denied an interview (bengals) will be available next year and will be acquired.Burgundy&GoldForever wrote:How? The team has major player personnel issues. If all of that happens, you have a HC, franchise QB and the desired DC locked into place. That's continuity. What will it amount to? Who knows but it's not a bad way to build a team.

OK, but as of right now the offense is taking two steps backwards and the defense isn't any better.Chris Luva Luva wrote:By keeping the same coach/philosophy (at least offensively) you can continue to build in one direction. At some point you have to stop taking one step forward and two steps backwards.

Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
I agree. Part of him commanding the room is his resume. In that he is known as Jon Grudens little brother. Unless he wins a SuperBowl or starts to make deep playoff runs he will be looked at as the other Gruden.DarthMonk wrote:Easily top half of the league (maybe even top 5) in scheming of offense but likely bottom half in commanding the room and making sideline decisions - IMO.
He seems to have no clue how to put together a defense and seems to care nothing about a running game.
Jay had the chance to hire some of the best defensive minds in the game today. Scott said it himself that Jay gets to choose his staff. Not once but twice he passed on Wade Phillips. After having one of the worst defenses in the league. Why wouldn't you want to bring in a proven expert in defense?
Is Jay insecure about another qualified candidate taking his job? If he had a good defense it would have secured his job even further.
Offensively just going to nitpick. I don't understand why he can't committ more to running game especially in the red zone.
I do recall Matt Jones fumbling on the 1yd line but that does not mean you abandon the run. You fix the fumbles.
It's no secret the Redskins offense struggles in the red zone.
Just fix the fumbling issues and run it more in the red zone.
A good running game is a qbs best friend. It keeps a defense honest and helps take pressure off the qb.
Let's say you are 1st and goal. Ten yards from the touchdown. Our offense averaged about 4-5 yards a carry.
3 straight runs gets you a TD.
Atlanta just lost the SuperBowl after abandoning the run. Which helped them build a 25 point lead. Davonte Freeman broke for a couple fifty yd plus runs. Yet they decided to get cute.
Seattle Seahawks a couple years back had Marshawn Lynch arguably the best powerback or Rb overall in the SuperBowl on the 1 or 2 yd line. They decided to pass the ball rather then hand it off to one of the best RBs in the game. In fact Lynch previously had a 15 yd run the play before.
Just committ more to fixing the run game this season. Garcon and Jackson are both likely gone. This offense has to replace the production of two 1000 yd recievers. It will help Kirk if we get the running game going.

Fisher has how many winning record years with the Rams? That's why he was shown the door..........DEHog wrote:Remember when Jeff Fisher signed a two year extension...

Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
My point is this…Why didn’t the Skins extend him right after the season? They did him no favors when it comes to recruiting coaches to replace those that left/fired? The Skins had to make this move for a couple of reasons; least of which they feel he’s their guy. Hard to recruit free agents with a lame duck HC, and I’m sure Cousins wants to see some stability if he stays. But don’t think for one second that if Cousins is signed that the pressure won’t be on him to win this year…you could make an argument that Gruden might have a longer rope if Cousins isn’t signed!!tribeofjudah wrote:Fisher has how many winning record years with the Rams? P.S. Fisher was shown the door because they're trying to sell NFL tickets in LA!

Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
The timing on this extension and announcement is odd, maybe the FO is feeling pressure to look as if they are in control and making prudent decisions. The extension changes nothing, todays activities at the Park will be just like they were last Monday. Business as usual, deflecting questions about Scott and Cousins.

I agree 1000%. Do people realize in all the time since Snyder has owned the team this is the first coach who has ever been extended? How insane is that??? I'm a big proponent of patience, stability and sticking with a plan.Chris Luva Luva wrote:That's absolutely false. Continuity and stability will go towards fixing most of the issues with this team.
Personally, I like Gruden. Clearly knows how to run an offense. My perception is that the players like and respond to him. I agree with some of the comments about game management and time management, but that seems fixable and small potatoes in the larger scheme.
You cannot win in this league changing coaches every two years. Motion is not progress.

I'd rather have good players. Joe Gibbs V1 couldn't do much with this roster. And Jay Gruden is no Joe Gibbs.riggofan wrote:I agree 1000%. Re: Gruden signed to 2 year extension....
Jay Gruden is not a bad HC and he's got some flaws for sure, but change for the sake of change at this time is not a good thing - IMO
This franchise has not been managed well the past few months and keeping Jay Gruden is better for the stability it projects not to mention that there are not a lot of coaches that would like to be a part of this mess right now PLUS there's no guarantee that Gruden will be here next season if he doesn't do a better job - right now this was an obvious move but it does not guarantee Jay Gruden much at all
We need to get Cousins signed to a LTD and clearly show the players and coaches that the FO decisions are not influenced by Dan Snyder
