Draft Talk - April 27, 2017

Post by tribeofjudah »

I feel it in my bones............we are keeping Kirk Cousins.

Certain pundits have thrown around these names for Redskins to draft in April.

DE Solomon Thomas
SS Jabrill Peppers
WR John Ross (luxury imo)
DT Malik McDowell
LB Zack Cunningham

among others.......

I'd like a STUD pass rusher, play maker. Super excited about who we snatch up.

What position will we take at #1?

It's a waste of time trying to read Scot McCloughan's mind.

there's no way of having any idea with all that has to be 'settled' before the draft
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

They need to draft an absolute killer running back, that is #1 priority. One that will be starting for us and not on a 3 year development plan. Maybe a FG kicker too.

Not to mention, its pretty clear he's going to take his highest rated guy available regardless of position.

I love following the draft each year, but you and BGF are completely right. Its nearly pointless to guess what McCloughan is going to do!

Yep. He immediately rendered just about all mock drafting, rumors, speculation, and analyses moot. It made March-April a boring time to be a Redskins fan.

Not that I'm complaining.

Neither am I. Just hoping he doesn't take another risk on a Josh Doctson. We need that 1st round pick to be a hit.

We were fortunate with Doctson that we didn't need him this season but we do need him next season and there's no guarantee he'll be ready.

We can't afford those kinds of misses on 1st round picks.

So, without knowing what he's thinking or even pretending to, give me another Scherff type pick at any position.

Totally agree that we cannot make any mistakes with top round draft picks - not sure about Doctson but it does not look good at all

I actually think he takes need into consideration.

Think about the Scherff pick. Leonard Williams most rated above Scherff. I think the pick was a good one.

I'm just saying I think Scott has to say that. It's not like he's going to draft a player and not say that player was the best available.

I think it would be safe to say best defensive player available in this draft.

Let's be honest last year's draft was mostly busts.
Only Cravens looks to be ok.

If it's truly best player available regardless of need. Then it would probably be OJ Howard at no.17. But when you consider the needs of team you think S, DT and lb.

I don't see that as an example of need over best available at all though. We needed a DE as much or more than we needed an offensive lineman. Just because Kiper rated Williams more highly doesn't mean SM did. The Giants wanted Scherff at #9 so I don't think it was much of a reach.

I think Scherff was a good example of how McCloughan is looking for "football players". That guy is tough, high character, loves football and will be around for a long time IMO.

Will be interesting to see his approach this year though. The defense needs help, there's no getting around that.

Not looking good so far. I'm going to give this one a chance though. I still think Fuller will be okay in the long run, and I won't be surprised to see Ionidis catch on over time as well. The big concern to me though is Doctson. We're just not a team that can afford to have a complete and total bust with the first round pick. I hope he's able to get healthy.

HOPEFULLY this FO is committed to BPA but I will grant that the D needs a lot of help

while we almost made the playoffs, I see this franchise needing a couple more drafts - PLUS, we have to find a QB

Yeah, Scot was quoted as saying Scherff was their #3 ranked player behind Fowler and A. Cooper.

I wanted us to pick Williams and was surprised to see that we picked Sherff, but he's been good and is a player that will have a longer career. I am not sure I am still in love with the pick, but if you want to complain about Scot, there are way easier complaints to make.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

Just look at our 2014 draft. After 1 year, it looked as if Breeland was the best and only solid pick, but we got 4 starters out of a class without a 1st round selection. In 2015 that draft looked like a dud.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

Was just about to type the same thing. 2014 draft is a very good example of waiting at least 2-3 years before fully grading a draft class.

Ten picks this year, not bad at all. Two in the 4th round is nice!

1-17-17 own pick
2-17-49 own pick
3-17-81 own pick
4-7-114 from Jets
4-17-124 own pick
5-10-154 from Saints
6-17-201 own pick
6-25-209 from Texans
7-2-220 from 49ers
7-17-235 own pick

Having 10 draft picks is great but if this FO is getting any sort of pressure or interference from Dan Snyder, we are in a bunch of trouble

I could care less who is the top dog (Bruce or Scot) as long as Dan Snyder stays out of things
I'm sure he's 'involved' and 'supportive' but he has to know that he needs to stay away from things & let the NFL guys manage this franchise
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

I agree, you can't judge a draft after one year...

Of course, Scot didn't know 1/2 his picks would be hurt most --or all of the year.

1) We know Cravens is a player.
2) If Doctson recovers he'll be a good player
3) Fuller was still recovering from a knee injury he incurred in college. Everyone said he was a steal in the 3rd round. I have good feelings about him as a nickel back, maybe more down the road.

Who knows, Daniels could come on and be a special teamer.

If Cousins is traded, Sudfeld could be a backup qb for us...

Lets talk in a couple years...

Scotts not going to the combine this year.
So really I am horrified at the thought of Danny and Bruce in the draft room.

I usually get really excited during draft time. In all my years as a Skins fan the draft was when hope was renewed.

But now I hear the news that Scott our GM is not attending the most critical event for a talent evaluator?

I too am extremely worried. On the other hand, what a player has put on film during games is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY more important than drills at the combine.

Let's hope Scot really is simply dealing with his grandma's death and that all this talk about parting ways with him is just smoke.
