New defensive coordinator: Greg Manusky

A bit of a head-scratcher, IMHO. But who knows except those on the inside.

I don't know much, but I know I don't love the Manusky promotion. Looks kind of like a desperation hire to me...

Yes I think we settled after we couldn't get the guys we wanted. I understand that he's been on the team for 1 year and helped Murphy. Just don't see a big change or improvement in the coaching and schemes. Tbh I think Bradley wanting to be a HC in the near future is why we didn't hire him early when we might have been able to.

Settling is definitely a better description than desperation. Seems like another Joe Barry type hire. I think I would have rather seen a defensive college coordinator with potential than Manusky

I think back to when Haslett was fired. We looked at Joe Barry and went, "well, at least he's not Haz."

I remember saying about Barry he has to be better then Haslett.

Either no one wanted to come here or Gruden is who I thought he was.

It's OK I guess. If this does not pan out just fire Gruden.
Scott will continue to build this team in the meantime.

Manusky is one of the last few coaches who played defense for Richie Petibon. Good enough for me.

While I do believe coaching makes a difference in the NFL, I really believe it's the talent on the field...

Scot needs to do these four things things and if he does, Greg will be successful:

1) Resign Baker and Gallette;
2) Sign two of DL Short, DL Poe, DL Williams, DL Wagner;
3) Draft the best ILB/MLB or FS in draft at 17; and
4) Draft the best ILB/MLB or FS in 2nd round.

Not pointing at anyone here, but all of the hand wringing by fans over these coordinator hires/promotions is kind of embarrassing. We need more talent on defense. If McCloughan does his job in the off season and upgrades the talent, I'm pretty confident the new defensive staff can improve on what we saw this past year. Would we all agree that the bar hasn't exactly been set very high?

For all of the disappointment over Manusky, he's an experienced guy who seems to be well regarded by the players and the front office too. Since Manusky and Tomsula were both with the 49ers while McCloughan was there, I doubt they'd be here if Scot didn't approve of the moves as well.

btw It was hard yesterday to watch the Falcons put on an absolute clinic on offense. I doubt you would have to look very hard for old posts on this board complaining that Kyle Shanahan sucked and blaming Mike for hiring his unworthy son. Amazing to see what a coach can do when he has something legit to work with.

Huh? Didn't we put up 42 points on these same Packers in week 11? What I remember more about Kyle, was that he sometimes tried to get too cute with the trick plays, and abandoned the run too early. Sound familiar?

Not to get completely derailed on Shanahan but noticed Keim making the same point this morning about talent.

Kyle Shanahan's abilities evident with Redskins, even in bad years
Anyway, back to 2011. The Redskins that season ranked 15th in yards per game, 19th in yards per play and 25th in offensive points per game (excluding returns on defense/special teams). Nothing spectacular. They finished 5-11 (not too good, another ex-coach would say). But when you would go back and re-watch the games, you’d see a lot of open receivers. You’d see plays that worked because of concepts and design. And you knew when that scheme had talent, it would be explosive.

That season, Jabar Gaffney caught a team-high 68 passes. The next season? He caught four passes in three games with Miami and never played again. The leading rusher was rookie Roy Helu with 640 yards. He gained 531 yards in the next four years combined and didn’t play in 2016.

The starting quarterback -- aside from the three-game misadventure of John Beck -- was Rex Grossman. He threw 16 touchdowns and 20 interceptions. He ever attempted another pass.

Nobody was going to get a head coaching job off that season, but it was also a good example of why you can’t just look at stats to measure a coordinator. You have to go deeper. Heck, in 2010, Anthony Armstrong caught 44 passes and averaged 19.8 yards per catch; he caught a combined 10 passes the rest of his career and was done after 2012.

Kyle does not suck but he's like a lot of coordinators - they need good players

just look at what Kyle did with the Browns ...

Manusky will be as good or bad as the quality of players we find for him - look at what Barry did with these guys

MOST IMPORTANTLY - WE NEED BETTER PLAYERS
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

What?
I was asking how you were saying Kyle is so much more productive in Atlanta ("when he has something legit to work with") than McVay was here (where he apparently had nothing to work with), yet we scored only two less points on the same Packers team. Nowhere did I say Kyle sucks, now or back when he worked for us.

My point was Kyle had talent in both locations, and we are still losing games for the same reasons, with or without Kyle.

This thread got off-topic. But that's none of my business. I just dropped in to say I like the Jim Tomsula defensive line coach thing.

Yes this is good news. Tomsula did a great job with the 49ers
Dline in his years there.

With Manusky, Tomsula and Scotty Mac that's more influence in the draft room that could favor defensive players.

Finally an offseason move I like.
Actually this makes the Manusky promotion look a lot better. Now we just need to draft some more talent.

The combination of Manusku and Tomsula should help the front 7. Hopefully a good secondary coach along with good players come our way.

As others have said, it won't matter if we hire Buddy Ryan. The defense needs way more talent.

Manusky gets a free pass this season just on account of him being an ex Redskin. Hope he gets some above-average talent.
