Sean McVay to Rams. Who do we replace with?

Post by Prowl33 »

Hot off the presses, McVay is the youngest head coach in NFL history, wish him the best if luck.

Now the bignorant question is who did we get?

Jay Gruden. They won't hire anyone from outside. It would change the offense.

Jay won't go back to running the offense himself, he said that was a mistake last time he did it.

I think the easy and good answer is Bill Callahan. In house guy with tons of respect and a real hard ass.

I think OC will be internal. But curious how it effects his DC choice. Bc now he doesn't have McVay breathing down his throat.

Man, that sucks! I didn't see that coming at all. I hope we get someone who respects the running game a little more than McVay did. I like having a great passing game, but if the other team doesn't respect the run, and you can't control the clock and pick up that occasional 4th and 1, then we won't go very far.

Good luck to Sean - not that worried about the new OC as I'm sure Jay will find someone that's a good fit - having a top 5 offense is good too
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Hate to see him go. But good luck ONLY when you're not playing the Skins.

Crap. Now we're shopping for an OC and a DC? With a HC that's waiting for an extension? I know things are being run a lot better than in the past, but I'm still concerned.

I don't like the idea of offensive line coaches also being the coordinator. Too much split responsibility. I'd rather elevate Matt Cavanaugh to coordinator and find a younger coach to replace him as QB coach. Cavanaugh hasn't been great as OC in the past but he's experienced and ultimately it's Jay Gruden's offense.

Dark horse name for OC or to bring in to assist with the line if Callahan is elevated has to be Aaron Kromer, right? Seems every move we make is related to the late Jon Gruden Bucs teams.

Wow this really surprised me for a few reasons. One he's really young, Josh Daniels come to mind when I think about McVay leading a team. Two I thought LA would want to make a big slash with a new stadium coming. Can't believe McVay was well known....Very smart of them to get Phillips on board.

McVay probably asked himself, "Who's defense would I least like to face?" The answer was Phillips. I wish Gruden had asked him that question two years ago when we signed Barry. smh

Did we really not want Wade Phillips here? Or did he choose not to come here? I don't know which one it is, but everyone here seems to be of the belief that he wanted the job here and we said "no."

This ^^^ surprised me a bit. You must not listen to ESPN 980 much.

I think we will promote a current asst. to OC and Jay will call the plays - probably Callahan. Of course, this will likely make Jay even worse at clock management, etc.

Too bad we didn't move faster and tell Wade we'd be promoting his son to OC if Wade would come in as DC.

I now want Pettine.

Wade Phillips passed on the Redskins because of the lack of talent on the defense now. I can't say that I blame him.

Callahan is the most likely candidate, and I'm okay with it.

That's your opinion, right? I don't think that's really the case. His son was TE's coach when he interviewed two years ago. He said then, he would love to coach the team we had at that time. That there was plenty of talent. Since then we've lost Orakpo, but we gained Junior Galette (even though he's been injured twice), Murphy, and Cravens to replace him. We also added Norman. It's not like we don't have anyone on that side of the ball, and there's always the draft and free agency to address holes. I think we passed on him, not vice versa.

I think we probably still had a shot at W. Phillips, but the Rams pulled a Snyder and made sure he didn't leave for any other interviews. If we really did want him we got outsmarted

Found the article.
“Fundamental football is the key,” Wade Phillips said. “You have to be able to teach fundamentals like how to move in space, which is important to get a player better. That’s what coaching is: you have to help a player get better. That’s always been our family’s philosophy.”
...
“They’ve got some strong outside backers, which is a building block for the 3-4 – to have guys that can set the edge,” Wade Phillips said of the Redskins. “That really helps. I think they will do well.”

If Gruden didn't hire Wade the first time. Why would he hire Wade now?

Obviously Mcvay is much smarter then Gruden. Also Mcvay was confident in his own coaching abilities and not threatened by Wade Phillips expertise. Good for Mcvay.
