Matt Jones?
I asked Rich Tandler via Twitter to explain how Matt Jones fell from Grace.
He said it a "post" answer not by Twitter and to wait until seasons end for the break down!!
Is he going to get Cut? Then ball out with another team ??
Find Waldo? Nah.....find Matt Jones!!

Re: Matt Jones?
Passion for the game. What have we seen in Matt Jones that proves he has it? Missed draft pick, he was. Unfortunately it happens. Move on.
Re: Matt Jones?
I see him coming back, he's only in his second year of a rookie contract. I could see him working back into the rotation next year.

I wouldn't say that. He needs to get his ball handling under control (a la Tiki Barber), but he's a good player. I think he has passion for the game.Burgundy&Wha? wrote:Passion for the game. Re: Matt Jones?
I liked Matt Jones a lot his rookie year. If he gets a chance to play again and lives up to his potential, I'd be happy as hell for him (and the team).

Re: Matt Jones?
Fumbling is one thing -- all bad -- but his lack of getting that extra yard is what causes me to question his desire. Compare his running to Fat Rob. Kelley makes me marvel at his ability to gain zero or one or two yards on plays where I KNOW Matt Jones would have been stopped for a loss. How many times did we see Matt Jones refuse to hit a DB when he could get extra yards? Those are the things that make me wonder about whether he wants it bad enough.Deadskins wrote:I wouldn't say that. Re: Matt Jones?
I do agree that Fat Rob does keep his feet moving and grinds out that extra yardage where Jones would not. I think that's why he has kept Jones on the bench, after he was replaced for fumbling.Burgundy&Wha? wrote:Fumbling is one thing -- all bad -- but his lack of getting that extra yard is what causes me to question his desire. Matt who?
Re: Matt Jones?
I still contend Matt was the most talented of the bunch. It was his fumbling issues that cost him his job. I'd give him another chance. Rob also gets stuffed. What about the pies game. Rob talked all that smack and did nothing. All though Gruden still insists on passing 50 times a game.
Honestly I blame Gruden for Matt Jones not being developed as much as possible.
All Gruden cares about is passing. That's it. He has no concept of a team winning as a whole.

In that case, do you also "blame" Gruden that an undrafted free agent raised his game to beat out the more talented guy? Seems only fair. Masterful coaching job there.HEROHAMO wrote:I still contend Matt was the most talented of the bunch. It was his fumbling issues that cost him his job. I'd give him another chance. Come on, man. These are professional football players and grown men. Don't fumble the freaking ball. Do your job and don't make excuses.
I'm sure you're right that the fumbling issue cost him his job, but kind of agree with BGF and Deadskins that something was missing with the effort. Kelley has looked so much better working to get that extra yard or two.

NOBODY even runs half the time anymore. Having said that, there are only 3 teams in playoff position that throw more than we do. Here are current pass play percentages this year.

MJ is a professional and should play a hand in developing his skills as well. Like work on his fumbling problem during the offseason. Chances are if he got that under control Gruden would have given him the ball more.HEROHAMO wrote:I still contend Matt was the most talented of the bunch. Some of them were always behind and had to pass, but it's an interesting list anyway.DarthMonk wrote:NOBODY even runs half the time anymore. Having said that, there are only 3 teams in playoff position that throw more than we do. Here are current pass play percentages this year.

You say nobody runs half the time anymore? Yet our hated rival who happens to be doing the best in the league runs it about half the time at 49.6. That percentage will go up moving forward as well towards the run as the season closes. The pies average 30 carries a game. They also lead the league in time of possession.
I don't care what most of the league is doing. Only one team wins the SuperBowl. If your doing what everyone else is doing it means your just average and our record says as much.

OK I admit I am not a Jay Gruden fan. I just think he's an average head coach.
Matt Jones needs to man up and do his job.
But I'll say this much. I bet you Jay Gruden puts much more focus on passing the ball then running plays.
I bet the practices have double the passes vs runs.

Fair enough. I like Gruden so far, but he still has a lot to prove one way or the other IMO.HEROHAMO wrote:OK I admit I am not a Jay Gruden fan. I just think he's an average head coach.
Definitely. He looked like a beast his rookie year. Got the chance to start this year, should be embarrassed by how he did.HEROHAMO wrote:Matt Jones needs to man up and do his job.
I don't know, but why wouldn't he? One of those things is way more complex than the other.HEROHAMO wrote:But I'll say this much. I bet you Jay Gruden puts much more focus on passing the ball then running plays.

Re: Matt Jones?
Jay Gruden is a win away from being the first Redskins coach to take them to the playoffs back to back years since Gibbs I. That's after a two year stretch where they won a total of 7 games. And he's done it with changes in the front office, defensive coordinator, and at QB. I'm a Jay Gruden fan. He's not Belichick but he's pretty dang solid.HEROHAMO wrote:All Gruden cares about is passing. That's it. He has no concept of a team winning as a whole.
And I don't know why anyone is surprised the Redskins are pass happy. Jay is part of the Mike Holmgren coaching tree. On down from there, Jon Gruden was known to get pass happy. Every assistant Jon Gruden had who's gone elsewhere has been pretty pass happy, like Trestman and Hackett. Even Bill Callahan, who handles our run game, was known to get too pass happy in Oakland and later at Nebraska. I think the Redskins staff wants to run but between having a pretty darn good passing game and an unsettled running back situation they find it too easy to go all in on the pass game.

Re: Matt Jones?
I'm not a Jay Gruden fan but I'm hoping that he can make me change my mind
I'm really hope that they are spending a lot more time practicing the pass game because we need to be better at that
we have a QB that is setting records for passing yardage but he still is not comfortable with the fade route and can you imagine how many yards he would have if he'd completed the passes that were to wide open receivers but the ball was not thrown well
keep on practicing those passes - be nice to see the hard work pay off
I'm not sure that we've seen the last of Matt Jones

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Re: Matt Jones?
On many occasions I've seen him step out of bounds instead of lowering a shoulder on the BD bearing down on him. A RB punishes those that hit him, they hit him at a price that they may not be as eager to pay by the 4th quarter. Matt Jones just don't have the right instincts, let him move along.

Last I heard 49.6% < 1/2.HEROHAMO wrote:Yet our hated rival who happens to be doing the best in the league runs it about half the time at 49.6.
Could be.HEROHAMO wrote:That percentage will go up moving forward as well towards the run as the season closes.

Yay. I wish I could say the same about us.HEROHAMO wrote:The pies average 30 carries a game. They also lead the league in time of possession.
Fine. Did I argue otherwise?HEROHAMO wrote:I don't care what most of the league is doing. Only one team wins the SuperBowl. If your doing what everyone else is doing it means your just average and our record says as much.
My post is spot on. The team that runs THE MOST does not even do it half the time. Again, having said that, there are only 3 teams in playoff position that throw more than we do. In other words, there are 9 teams in playoff position who run more than we do.
What, if anything, is it about my post that bothers you?

Re: Matt Jones?
I'm with you, man. We have a young coach getting his first legit shot at being a head coach. He's not been perfect, but he's gotten better each year and back to back playoff years is a real accomplishment with this franchise. He's also not some retread or some guy who won somewhere else that we're hoping will rub off on us. It boggles my mind that fans can't be more supportive of him and want to see him succeed.Smithian wrote:Jay Gruden is a win away from being the first Redskins coach to take them to the playoffs back to back years since Gibbs I. We did pretty well that one time we brought in a young offensive coordinator who had made a name for himself in the "air coryell" offense.

And speaking of Belichick:
Bill Belichick says coaches are being fired too quickly

Somebody should post that s*** on Dan Snyder's office door.Belichick did, however, speak on coaches being fired too quickly. He simply doesn’t think the way to build a franchise is by firing coaches before they can really get started, which some would argue was the case in Buffalo.
“There is a lot of change. It’s frequent and it seems like it is coming earlier and earlier every year,” he said. “I don’t think personally that’s the best way to manage a team."

While I'm usually very conservative about hiring/firing coaches, we should keep an eye on Wade Phillips. His contract is up after Sunday with the Broncos. Always felt he was the DC we should have gone after from the beginning.Deadskins wrote:Yeah, but Ryan sucks. I wouldn't want him to coach my team either.
