The Cousins story was always going to play out 1 of 2 ways..

Post by Prowl33 »

When the skins franchised him, they did it knowing 1 of 2 things would happen...

1) He wouldn't play up to his 2015 level, he would fall apart, and show he wasn't worth the money.

2) He would play up to or better than his 2015 level, he showed he was not a 1 hit wonder, and they would have to pay him big time $$$.

The franchise tag allowed them to forgoe the risk of #1 happening, and the team being stuck with money in an incapable player.... at the expense of #2 happening and having to dish out even more money.

At this point I think it's fair to say they got what they were looking for.

You're not wrong, but I still think it would've made more sense for them to have resigned him last year, or at the very least made it seem like they were interested in keeping him long term. From what I hear, they totally low balled him.

Cousins is very lucky that he decided to take a chance - he's going to make a lot more money by not signing with the Redskins

This FO is also lucky because they are not signing players to long term deals that restrict them being able to pay all of their players

more power to Cousins if he chooses to go play someplace else - we need players that want to be here and understand that there's only so much money available to fairly pay all the other players

This FO is willing to pay Cousins a lot of money but they are not making the same mistake that other franchises have done
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

From a team perspective though cousins wanted too much. We would of taken on a lot of risk signing him for 4 or 5 years at 18+ million per year, and if he had flopped this year it would of really set us back. Atleast this way yeah we pay more now, but there is a lot larger sample size to base that decision on.
