Ravens Game Thoughts

I thought this was an impressive win because the Defense made an adjustment and took control of the game. They literally shut down a powerfull offense with a SuperBowl MVP quarterback, one of the best in the sport.
I thought Cousins was on the edge too often, throwing without setting his feet and focusing on a single receiver. I don't have a clue who was calling the offense, I have no explanation as to what some of the plays were. We won in spite of them really. I thought the O line did a credible job, esp with only 2 starters playing in their proper position. The running game is an absolute puzzle, I don't think they are committed to run the ball. They don't seem to improve on it from game to game - granted they were missing many starters and need to gell as a unit.
I thought the D did so well because the MLB's played in a little closer, stuff the run and stormin on Flacco while the corners were man coverage. They played like that until the last minute and a half when they dropped into zone and that was when the Ravens were able to move the ball.

For the second time in five years - and again after a regular-season loss to the Washington Redskins - Ravens coach John Harbaugh has decided to fire his offensive coordinator in an effort to jumpstart a struggling unit.

Our MVP was Harbaugh.

1st drive for Ravens was 9 plays, 75 yards, TD. They ran 5 times for 49 yards.

2nd drive for Ravens was 4 passes and a punt.

3rd drive for Ravens was a run up the gut for 12 yards followed by pass, run, pass. Then 3 incompletes with the 3rd resulting in a terrible PI call. Then 2 runs for 15 yards followed by a few more passes and a FG.

They were GASHING US yet not running. Thank you !

To start the 4th quarter they ran their stud for 27 yards on first down then brought in the pass catching RB who ran for 3 then passed 21 of next 22 plays.

To top it all off, they ran a fake FG instead of getting a 7 point lead.

Against the Redskins and their 30th-ranked run defense, the Ravens ran the ball 11 times for 74 yards in the first quarter. However, the next three quarters, they had only seven more designed runs. Flacco threw the ball 46 times a week after throwing 52 passes in another close loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Every win over a Baltimore team is a big win. "Bush league Baltimore Orioles fans", as my Dad taught me and as we agreed, those fine, and lucky, kids who went to Bunker Hill Elementary. Horse manure Baltimore Colts and their arrogant fans, and especially those Washingtonians who turned their TV antennas to watch Colt games. Johnny Unitas owned a restaurant called "The Golden Arm", approximately and surely in honor of Sonny Jurgensen...the best passer of their generation. Finally, the Cleveland Browns operating as the "Ravens".

Ugly game but we got the win. Good to see the defense step up and not allow many points! Special teams have been the best it has been in probably a decade! I'm not even going to fault Hopkins for any of the misses. That win was crazy, shouldn't have even attempted that 56 yarder.

I'll still give the credit to Joe Barry for making right kind of adjustments that resulted in getting the Coordinater fired! Way to go Joe!

By the time I got to D.C. in 1972 there was no Washington Senators. There was the Texas Rangers. If you liked baseball the Orioles were the only game in town. When the Nationals came to town I did not jump ship to their fan base, however since the teams are in two different leagues it is entirely possible to support both unless or until they play each other in a World Series, in which case my allegiance remains with the Orioles. Fortunately, I never became interested in the Baltimore Dolts, who left on the Mayflower.

Long-winded explanation to say there are a generation or two of D.C. sports fans who had little choice in the matter of baseball teams. It was the Orioles or nothing. No one wanted to be a Pirates fan. Those uniforms ...

Washington was, for better or (always) worse, Senators country... Both they and the Orioles played in the American League, so it's not like today, where you can cheer both the O's and the Nats, and not have to make a choice until they meet in the WS... In the 50's and 60's, only the pathetic wore orange, black and white... akin to a lifelong DMV resident wearing Dallas rags... That's the context.

I didn't take Welch's comments personally or as an ad hominem. Just explaining how much of a difference a generation or two makes in terms of fanhood. Ten years older, I'm a Senators fan. Ten years younger, I'm a Nationals fan.
