I'm not surprised by either of these moves. The beat reporters have been predicting both of them for weeks.

These seem like cap moves as much as anything else. That's around $7.5MM off the books. Lauvao might be next if that's the strategy they're implementing. But only if they can find a center they trust.

Not surprising. There was talk that Paea came into camp strong and had done well, but he didn't do much in the preseason games. Meanwhile, it seems like Riley's been on the bubble for more than a year.

I guess, but they weren't cut because we needed to clear cap space. They were cut because they weren't worth the money we were paying them. Other guys were getting it done and were less expensive.

That remains to be seen. I'm still not at all sold on this team's run defense. I'll be stunned if it's not in the bottom five again.

I've been hoping a real nose guard falls into our clutches for 4 years... What we currently have is barely serviceable, has been since we went to a 3-4 base... everything in the front 7 pivots on an anchor in the middle of the line... we do not have that.

33 year old Golston starting concerns me. Powe's health concerns me. I think they believe Hood can play the nose as well. In any case it's less than promising. It's not like they haven't tried to address the position. Haynesworth. Knighton.

Well of course it does. But I heard Doc Walker say it exactly the right way yesterday. If you have two guys who are EQUAL, then you're keeping the less expensive guy. Whatever you think of the rest of that defense, there really isn't much argument to be made that Paea has been any kind of standout. Same with Riley.

That's why I think Lauvao is next.

Hmmm. Now THAT would be interesting and surprising.

I don't see that one coming personally, but only because that o-line still seems to be in flux. Like, is Long going to stick at left guard or does he end up at center?

Lavao was playing well when he got injured last year. The line's play dropped off significantly when he went down. He could go back to guard and move Long to center.

I've been wrong a lot of times. This might be another one. But the pattern says they aren't really excited about paying Lauvao $5MM when they can pay Long $764k and save $4MM against the cap.

Has Lauvao been playing $4.2MM better than Long at left guard?

OR can Long or Lauvao make the switch to Center to keep both?

Not in quite a while, that's for sure! And pretty sure I've heard it reported that Long is getting more of the first team reps.

No, I agree with your point comparing those two guys. Still not sure they have the depth though to be comfortable letting Lauvao go. Aside from the presumed starters, which of those backup guys are you comfortable with and which ones would you say are better than Lauvao?

And maybe that's their line of thought: We're not paying $5MM for a backup so we'll start Lauvao and keep Long in reserve. The real issue with Long is they're not thrilled with him at center, as evidenced by the attempt to sign Storck.

I think, in a perfect world, they would play Lauvao at left guard, Long at center, and say goodbye to Lichtensteiger.

There is that.

In my perfect world, they'd play Kouandjio at left guard and Long at center and move on from the other two stop gaps! Doesn't seem like AK has made that jump yet though.

Not at all. No progress. Disappointing.

Has Lauvao been playing $4.2MM better than Long at left guard?

Apparently:

Offensive line (9):

Starters: LT Trent Williams, LG Shawn Lauvao, C Kory Lichtensteiger, RG Brandon Scherff, RT Morgan Moses
Backups: OT Ty Nsekhe, G Spencer Long, G Arie Kouandjio, C Austin Reiter

I wouldn't be surprised to see Long starting at center. Keeping an expensive lineman is very un-McCoughan-like but it was Lichtensteiger, not Lauvao who took a paycut. I think most agree Lauvao was playing very well last season before the injury and it would stand to reason they feel like that Lauvao would be better than this Long. I know I'd love to get inside Scot's head for a day just to see how he thinks.

from the DM thread about the 'official' starting 53 ...
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Thanks. I think Long is injured right now too.
