Stopping the Run

Post by SKINS#1 »

With Loannidis at NT and Daniels playing MLB, it seems the Redskins have addressed the run up the middle if these players are as good as expected.

Really? I hope to God the plan to address the run isn't to plug the 6th and 7th round rookies in. :D

The two of them together are smaller than Butz alone. Butz was 6'7" tall ... and wide.

They may be better than there draft position suggests. Plus if they can get a rotation to keep players fresh it can only help. I think a fresh 2nd string player is better than a tired first string player and rotating players is huge to success especially on the defense. A player not pushing as hard as he can because he is tired compared to fresh player off the bench pushing as hard as he can is a huge difference and having a player giving 100% every down because of rotating can only make the defense a lot better.

I feel we have a decent core of players to be able to successfully stop the run, however it is more the philosophy that needs to be changed. When the team moved to less gap control we created gaps for RBS to run through. Joe Barry will need to mix it up more and be able to do both. I think with the lack of pressure from our OLBs the need for more pressure from the dline was essential so thats why they went with that philosophy.

With Gallette returning however and the team having more confidence in Preston Smith it will allow our dline to play more gap control more often.

What's the story with DE Corey Crawford? I've heard the team talking him up lately as part of the d-line help, and I even saw him making the 53 man roster in a recent "prediction" article. Anybody have any good insight into that guy?

I just know he's a 2d year player from Clemson that we signed back in January.

He was on the practice squad last season, IIRC. There's a very detailed writeup on Crawford on one of the many popular Redskins blog sites but I'm reluctant to copy and paste it here.

I think with Peia being healthy and our additions at LB the run game is going to get stuffed. The Skins got rid of the dead weight and the players we have now we be pretty good against the run. The QB having all day to throw is what was hurting us. The cornerbacks can't cover a receiver when thy have 5 to 6 seconds to get open. A pass rush which we have not had will make the secondary better even if we didn't change a player back there. We have the DB's to get it done. The pass rush we have not have. Stopping the run game will be easier too when they keep other teams from getting first downs every time it is 3d and 6 or more and the other team keeps making first downs when the QB has all day to find someone open 6 yards down field or more when there is no pressure to get rid of the ball.

Stopping g the run will be a lot better when we can get the defense off the field so their tongues are not hanging out. Teams ran wide on us a great deal. I know our defense was tired when they were doing so. A pass rush will improve the defense against the run just by getting the other team's offense off the field and the defense not being so tired. The pass rush was the main reason the defense struggled. If we get a pass rush wait and see how much better we are against the run. It will be obvious.

 the key to any defense BEGINS with being able to stop the run

that's it
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Thanks! It would be nice to see some of our own young players start to fill those roles.

you may be right ... BUT ... being able stop the other team from running the ball is the first step

having a really good defense against the run generally means you have a good defense

You right, if you cannot stop an inch in a game of inches than you cannot win. Defense wins championships and the majority of the SB Champs are able to stop the run.
