One thing I don't understand though is that they save $5m by releasing him now, but would have saved $8m releasing him after June 1. I don't really get why we didn't wait a few weeks on the move in that case. Culliver is rehabbing right now. Its not like the later release would have affected his ability to go somewhere else that much.

This have anything to do with it?

Of course, the 2016 guarantees were voided when he was suspended one game for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, making it easier to swallow from a financial standpoint.

I was wondering if they were going to do this. We have Norman, Breeland, Fuller, Hall, and Dunbar. Culliver isn't worth the cost.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

*Blackmon too right?

Obviously with the Norman acquisition our CB group got instantly better.. but with the addition of Fuller it's now a strength with solid depth. Saw this coming and hoped for it. Culli just never got healthy and was a liability because of it.

Not to mention we needed the loot to sign our rookies.

NOW, do we make a run at one of the safeties on the market i.e. Kam or Rolle???

Plus he's off the books this year giving us the extra 3 mil next year?

Can they release now and designate him as a post-June 1 cut?

Not sure man. You're usually my go to guy on having these things explained!

Just looking through my twitter feed and see it was Grant Paulsen who put that out there so maybe more to it than what I read:
Grant Paulsen ‏@granthpaulsen 2h2 hours ago

Scot McCloughan annouces #Redskins released CB Chris Culliver. Releasing Culliver before 6/1 saves $5.5M in cap. Would've saved $8M post 6/1

We are definitely deep on paper. I wouldn't mind bringing Culliver back like they had suggested they were open to.

Kam would be nice but Rolle is about to turn 34. We could find better and younger. No need to rush.

I made mention of this in the draft thread. Kind of saw it coming, and it makes sense since they already believe in Breeland, and obviously Norman, since they paid him so much. I think it's a smart move, and if we bring him back at a cheaper price, then more power to Scot, for making the smart move.

Keim says in the article that they did designate a post June 1 cut, so it will save $8 million towards cap.

The thing to remember is that the $3 million difference doesn't just go away. It's what year the money counts against the cap. If we save the 8 instead of 5 this year, then the 3 counts against the cap next year. It's signing bonus money prorated over the life of the contract. By doing it after June 1st, it just adds another year to the proration. If they cut him now, we would have $3 million more in cap space next year. It's just an accounting trick.

^^ thanks JSPB - just another example of how well informed some posters here are
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Yeah finally figured out what the accounting gimmick was. Grant Paulsen definitely oversimplified what was going on. Thanks for clarifying!

anyone hear Scot or anyone say that we could resign Culliver if the price is right? Somebody told me that but I didn't see or hear it myself.

Yes. Culliver is going to hit the market and see what he can get. If he can't find an offer he likes, the Skins want to bring him back at a new rate of pay. Not all that different from the Pot Roast situation — and we almost got him back.
