Don't think it had anything to do with Jackson or Garcon, he was the best player on the board for the Skins and they took him. This is what a GM who takes BPA looks like...It's refreshing to see. The Cowboys pick was interesting two great players there when they picked, even though they need D they took a RB...would love to know who made that pick for them?

I agree that Scot went BPA. However, I think the future state of the team is part of his equation and made this decision a no-brainer.

Agree with both of you completely. Docston was #11 on Kiper's top 50 and was highly ranked almost everywhere else.

This is how you do it. You get great value at the #21 pick. You get a first rounder who doesn't have to come in and be the man on day one, and you stock the team with as many elite players as you can regardless of position or need.

Btw can we talk about how badly McCloughan rolled the Texans last night? I know it was just a 6th round pick next year, but Houston had no reason to give that pick away to trade up one spot.

That wasn't the typical trade back to stockpile picks move though, you know? That seemed like some serious poker faced game of chicken stuff to force the Texans to make a dumb trade. Loved it.

Two good points from Keim this morning about Docston. I was curious if that pick might affect Garcon or DJax this year:

Cap savings: The Redskins have only about $4 million in cap space available after signing corner Josh Norman last week. And they have two expensive receivers in Jackson ($9.25 million) and Garcon ($10.2 million). The Redskins like Garcon quite a bit, but cutting him would save the Redskins $8 million. However, a source said nothing will change for Garcon. If nothing else, the addition of Doctson allows the Redskins to move on after this season from either Garcon or Jackson. Also, by not needing to re-sign both players, and with a cheaper starting receiver in Doctson, the Redskins will have more money available to sign other key free agents such as Cousins, tight end Jordan Reed, linebacker Junior Galette and defensive end Chris Baker. They can cut receiver Andre Roberts and save $3 million (or $4 million if it’s designated post-June 1).

And what Gruden liked is intriguing to say the least:

A.J. Green comparison: The Redskins met with Doctson only one time, at the scouting combine, for 15 minutes. But he has definitely had his fans in the organization for a long time. Redskins coach Jay Gruden, though, saw something on tape that looked familiar, which is why he said Doctson reminded him in some ways of his former Bengals receiver, A.J. Green. Though Doctson is 2 inches shorter than Green, Gruden said Doctson has “the same type of body control and the ability to high-point” the ball. The Redskins lack a player with that height and leaping ability, and it should make Doctson a threat in the red zone. He said his game begins with the “most dominant trait a receiver should have, and that’s catching the football.”

Good stuff in the Post on Docston. You can sort of see the traits that Mccloughan talks about here:

Josh Doctson. Slight surprise. Would have preferred Laquan Treadwell at WR, but in Scot we trust.

Yeah I had Treadwell as my "sleeper" pick for us in the first round. Thought he was the better WR, but I definitely trust that Scot knows better than I. Not really surprised that we went WR in the first round.

I'll be curious to dig into the difference between those two guys. Both are 6-2 but Treadwell is like 20 lbs heavier. Assuming Doctson is the speedier guy?

I have a feeling that "character" was the difference... anyone notice how Treadwell appeared to be pouting during the interview with Deion? Sanders even said something about it... "you look like you're not happy about where you went". I get the disappointment, but a mature professional will just roll with it, and you will never see it... see Laramy Tunsil... man, he rolled with it, and gained mucho respect.

Doctson is rarely demonstrative. Takes care of business, acts like he's been there before. No showboating. His businesslike approach reminds me of Art Monk.
He has excellent hands, and will win more than his share of contested balls. He will mix it up a bit when pushed. I did not see much film of him in the running game, but I suspect he would have no qualms about blocking... how good he is there, I have no idea... OH! And he'll get to hone his craft against two of the better, physical corners in the game... I imagine they will also work to put a little more muscle on his frame, as well.

I'm pleased. I think he's the real deal.

I still don't think it was just the drug use. That was really weird how that all went down last night. The draft is about to start and suddenly Tansil's social media accounts are sharing bong videos and screenshots of conversations where he's breaking NCAA rules. There wasn't a lot of time for teams to get a grip on what was going on exactly. You want to spend your #6 pick on him and then a video of the guy having sex with a goat comes out on twitter around pick 12?
