Potomac Drainage Basin Indigenous Persons

Post by genuswine hoglover »

Have you seen the crap that was posted on NFL.com? I think this is entirely inappropriate. Isn't this site operated by the NFL for the general welfare and marketing benefit of its member teams? This guy has a sarcastic disparaging comments about everything from our team name, to our trades, to our supposed salary cap issues, and even to Joe Gibbs. Please e-mail and voice your displeasure. I also e-mailed the Redskins to let them know this stuff is going on.

He doesn't treat any other team any better. And, he's the funniest football columnist I've read.

I disagree with him about the name of our team, though.

No. The comments about Washington were particularly venomous. Did you go past the beginning to the team write up?

What a liberal weenie! I'm part Native American and the term "Redskin" is not offensive to me in the slightest. He needs to lighten up.

I've been reading these articles for a while now. But this year's article was kind of insulting. Do you really think the Indians care?

I bet they would when have minded when we were losing but now with Gibbs, they should be feeling fine. --Just kiddin' (sorry about that guys, no offense to anyone)

Even if the franchise had to change their name, fans would probably refuse to chant differently.

As far as I'm concerned, he can call the team whatever he wants. It doesn't bother me. Clearly he does not like the Redskins, but I don't really care.

However, his argument that "Redskin" is a derogatory term is weak, I think. I mean, it WAS a derogatory term at ONE POINT in HISTORY, but if someone used the term in that fashion today, they'd get laughed out of the room!

Also, I think that the Native American population has far more serious issues to contend with than the names of sports teams, such as crushing poverty and poor educational opportunities for their children.

One more thing, he draws a distinction between the name "Redskins" and the other Native American themed teams such as Braves and Indians. The Native Americans I've read about that have spoken out against such names draw no such distinction.

That's my two cents on that issue.

I still enjoy reading his column though, especially when we get into the real football season. I have to say it seems to me the editors at NFL.com aren't as good as those over at espn.com. Since his column moved to NFL.com after being canned from ESPN, I've noticed several typos per issue of his column.

Here is a copy of the email I just sent to Gregg Easterbrook, the auther of that article:
Gregg,
Have you ever referred to yourself, or had anyone else refer to you as a White man? Have you ever heard of someone with darkly pigmented skin referred to as Black? So why is it an insult to call someone of Native American descent a Redskin? And don’t say that their skin is not red, yours is not white, nor is a Black person’s skin truly black. Is it an insult just because you think it must be inherently demeaning to be a person of Native American origin? Why is White the only acceptable skin color to be used without negative connotations? I don’t claim to know the answer to these questions, and neither should you. I am sure there must be Native Americans somewhere proud to be called a Redskin, just as there are those proud to be known as Black or White.

No displeasure here. I like the guy and his writing. I read the comments about the Skins, and I don't find them insulting.

I am bothered by the fact that I didn't post this article, as I have the past two weeks. :x

See:

Exhibit B

Also note: The author is a Washingtonian (lives in Bethesda, MD), and is a Redskins fan (as far as I've gathered from his writings in the past). Check out his archives for other articles, and you'll get a feel for his "mojo".

The point is not that this guy felt this way about the team name (frankly, I was more upset with his disparaging remarks about our trades and about our salary cap "issues" and particulary about St. Joe). The point is that this is not the appropriate forum. This is a marketing site where there is a headline article disparaging one of their "products". The Redskins help pay for that site to help promote them, not bite them in the ass. The article was inappropriate.

It's like Coca Cola's marketing department putting out an add that says Coke sucks

Someone said it earlier, he does it across the board with all the teams.

He ain't Pastabelly, so don't read TOO deep into this.

If the NFL thought it was inappropriate, they'd haved canned the whole thing altogether and never signed him when ESPN let him go.

Interesting that you have gathered that he is a Redskins fan. I had not come to that conclusion in more than two years of reading his columns, but perhaps that is due to him attempting to maintain impartiality.

If he can be categorized as a "Redskins fan" he most certainly cannot be called a fan of Dan Snyder. He has made that much clear.

In response to the post about the terms "white" and "black" etc., I am almost certain he addressed this issue in one of his columns back on ESPN. But, as soon as they fired him, they deleted the archives of his articles (or at least took them offline), so I can't look it up to show it to you. Not that I entirely disagree with you, but I don't think that is the biggest hole in his argument, personally.

Oh, crap. Let's not turn this into another "Is the term 'redskin' offensive ?" deal.
When I read this, I was looking for what ticked off Genuswine so badly. I don't see anything really disparaging. Just another Dave Barry wanna-be. Dude is trying to be funny while airing his distaste for the team name. I can handle that.

the best thing I can say is ::shrug:: who cares what this guy writes?

It doesn't change anything as far as the Skins go, and if he is doing it to stir up crud as far as the Native Americans, it doesn't seem to work.

To me, he sounds like a loudmouth person with not a huge number of facts to back him up - like the drunk in the bar screaming about some inconsequential part of the game that happened 15 minutes ago but keeps repeating it over and over til he "convinces" everyone around him
