Not surprised by either in the least. Young is nearly 29, and at his position, is considered on the cusp of "old". And while very solid at his position, he also didn't add much due to the offensive scheme. His cap hit was 1.5M last year and now that his contract has expired, I didn't see us resigning him. We need depth at the RB position (if we don't resign Morris), but even at that, I don't see him back.

As far as Hatcher, he is 33 years old and Scot isn't keen on keeping older players. His production wasn't even average and really has only had one good season --- his contract year. I see no need to resign him.

What I think is nice is that Scot understands the NFL game when it comes to proper "GMing". The draft is where you get both value and your star players. FA is only to fill in the holes with depth. Signing "big FA" players is a fools paradise. It very rarely works out --- as we have seen. Scot is showing how a true roster should be managed, and these recent cuts are products of this concept. I really appreciate all Young did for the team and what he represented, but he lacks true value to the team, as does Hatcher. Unfortunately, you have to move on from of those types of guys.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

Hey riggo, thanks for starting this thread. I changed the title so we can keep a running list in the first post.

If anyone thinks some of these players deserve their own thread (e.g., RGIII has one here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=41282), you can start another in Hogwash to say goodbye if you want.

Thanks for cleaning it up! I saw Young this morning and then suddenly it was a flood of news.

I'm a little bit surprised by the Hatcher move only because I thought they might wait to see if he would retire first. Smart move by Hatcher, I guess.

Jeron Johnson gone:

John Keim ‏@john_keim 9m9 minutes ago

The Redskins continued their purge Monday, releasing safety Jeron Johnson per source. He signed a two-year deal...

I was surprised that they've already decided to pass on Knighton. I thought he played really well for us last year, and we currently don't have another NT on the team to replace him. Because of how McCloughan drafts, you know the Skins won't make sure they address that need in the draft, so maybe they feel like they'll have more than a couple of options in free agency?

I agree with you. I wonder what they will do and yes 'pot-roast' was not bad at all, he was a 'flavor' that was consistent.

I think he wasn't great either. I have been seeing the Skins linked to a couple different, younger NTs headed into free agency. ESPN just predicted the other day that we would target Ian Williams from SF.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/page/32f ... -nfl-teams
Nose tackle Ian Williams

The Redskins won't be overly active in free agency, but they do have a number of holes, starting at nose tackle. It's an excellent draft for defensive linemen, but signing a nose tackle in his prime would be a good first step -- and would allow them to target a DE in the draft if they want. The Jets' Damon Harrison would be a terrific target, but he might be too expensive. So the 49ers' Williams might make more sense if the Redskins can land him for a smart two- or three-year deal. -- John Keim

Knighton wants a big paycheck that isn't coming from the Redskins. It probably isn't coming from anyone. You have to be consistently dominant at nose tackle to get big money. It's easy to take any oversized defensive tackle and move him over the center. Also, Paul Soliai just became available and he should come cheap if they want a veteran stopgap.

Keenan Robinson has signed with the Giants: http://www.redskins.com/news-and-events ... 4752ba627f

Me too. He could still be a good player and probably will end up being good for the Ginas.

Recent departures include Tom Compton (Falcons) and Frank Kearse (New England). Seems like Morris is going to be gone but no real news on him yet.

I kind of thought RGIII would have found another home by now, but maybe the market for him isn't as big as I was assuming.

I don't consider any of the players with whom we've cut ties to be players I'd like to have back. Morris is a nice guy character-wise but he was just plain awful last season.

RGIII is who some of us thought he was. Not an NFL quarterback. Another Tim Tebow. NFL general managers appear to have taken notice of this.

circumstances regarding Griffin are more to do with the lack of quality available at this position and the number of clubs with QB issues
things will get sorted a bit better when the Fitzgerald and Kapernick issues get settled

I'm not saying that Griffin is definitely going to suddenly show that he's a capable NFL QB but I do not believe that he's done as an NFL QB
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

He's definitely in a holding pattern while the Fitzgerald and Kaepernick situations get sorted out. I kind of expect him to go to a team where he'll have a chance to compete for the starting job this summer.

The Denver Broncos traded for Mark effing Sanchez instead of signing RGIII. The only holding pattern he's in is the one where no one is going to give him the opportunity to start.

Griffin would love to be a starting QB but at this time he just needs to get on a roster

The opportunity to start and the opportunity to compete for the starting job are two completely different things. IMO Griffin will sign somewhere he has the chance to compete for the job rather than somewhere that he's know he'll be the backup.

And if he ends up in Denver, I think Mark effing Sanchez would probably beat him in the competition. Just my opinion.

The weird thing about all that is that Griffin would probably be better off going somewhere to sit behind a starter. Like Drew Brees in NO. I just don't think his ego will allow that.

I'm shocked they let Compton go, he was a very bright and motivated guy. I thought he had the potential to be a leader for many years.
