Re: David Amerson
Last night they said Amerson is playing Safety? Maybe that's why it appears he is in on more plays... Although he still seems to get burned at the same rate.
I had always hoped he'd make it to the next level with us... What can ya do tho?
I think when all our guys are healthy, he's still the odd man out anyhow. O well.
I'm more hurt by letting Rambo go, and not working with him further on the squad before letting him go. He may never be a probowl S, but seems to be a solid starter for the Bills- and will always have the coolest Jerseys!

A 2d round draft pick corner back getting regularly picked on and toasted? It completely blows my mind how people are so unwilling to hold PLAYERS accountable for their performance on the field. And Amerson is judged almost entirely on individual performance: coverage and tackling. Both of which he was suspect.
Like CT wrote, the coaching staff has been able to coach Quintin Dunbar into at least a capable CB and get everything possible out of Will Blackmon. But Amerson wasn't coached well enough? Come on. If anything, Amerson was drafted too high and the result of an underperforming scouting dept.

He sure does but he had a RECORD DAY...HIS BEST TOTAL against Amerson. You not watching the games my friend.

I don't know what games you guys are watching. Our secondary is slighlty improved from last year, but is still awful. We're in the bottom 1/3 in pass defense and we have a whopping 9 INTs on the season. Blackmon is bad, and Dunbar hasn't shown me anything. I think you guys are mistaken actually winning a few games with better play in the secondary. I still think we have a long way to go in our secondary.

He also had a record day against Cliff Harris, who is widely considered one of the top CBs in the league. I happen to see a lot of OAK games as a buddy of mine who I split a FF team with happens to be a Raider fan, and while I was laughing when they initially signed him, he has turned into a good CB by year's end.

I think you're overreacting. I didn't write anything about those guys being an elite secondary or anything. I said they've coached Dunbar to be "capable" after being a WR just a few months ago and gotten everything possible out of Blackmon. He's still the guy that QBs know to pick on. You're right that we still have a long way to go in our secondary.

Apologies if I came off as attacking you. I guess I'm just frustrated that the lightbulb seems to have finally gone off for the guy after we cut him, when we can clearly use the help at CB and the safety position.

I think we're all frustrated by that. In the end it's just another wasted draft pick for us. Amerson himself said he was just showing up and not putting any effort into it. When he got cut he figured out that no job is guaranteed in the NFL, regardless of draft position. I also think playing a different system is helping him. He was really bad at cover defensive schemes. He's much better suited to press / man schemes.

Re: David Amerson
I think our D is MUCH better then the stats would lead you to believe..
Great turnover margin, and they play EXTREMELY stingy, when asked to. A lot of these games that we've seen dominant play, we get a lead then GIVE the opposition small gains underneath for the rest of the day.. I think the lax playcalling is and has been our weakest link. We've seen the difference on the Offensive side of the ball, when the gas is down they are EXPLOSIVE!! Conversely, we get a lead then play not to lose, vs play to win. I'd MUCH prefer our D stand up for all four quarters, and keep the other team from even mounting a comeback, no matter how big our lead!
Oh, and Amerson still ain't *sh$t*... He'd have a hard time seeing the field even behind this current line up. He has been torched all year so qbs throw at him more, padding his stats for "breakups"... Even when he played for us he'd make a great play or two... Follows that directly up with getting burned BAD. No thanks

I really really like our defense when we bring five guys. It's enough to get the pressure without compromising what we play behind it. In fact it makes us play a little tighter behind it and makes the quarterback make a quicker decision. Plus we stop the run better when we bring five.
Whenever we bring five I feel a surge of confidence.

Well... Someone isn't watching the games... But,it's not us. No one is saying the secondary is set... But we are saying that the coaching has been superb.PAPDOG67 wrote:riggofan wrote:Countertrey wrote:I would just point out the the same coaching staff (that PAPDOG says blew it) has taken an UDFA WR, and turned him into a starting CB who is more than holding his own against opposing starting WRs, has kept pace with their #1's, and is looking pretty darned good in general. You can't be taking the totality of the situation into account when making that statement.
- We lost our starting SS.
- We lost our best CB.
- We lost D. Hall for multiple games.
- D. Hall is learning on the fly at both FS and SS.
- Quinton Dunbar a UDFA RECEIVER, who was converted to CB and pushed into an active role.
- The loss of a premier pass rusher in Junior Gallete
- Blackmon was picked up off of the street, he wasn't here during the off-season.
Considering all of that, the secondary is playing superbly. And as others have said in this thread, the coaching is top notch.
The road to the number 1 pick gaining speed!
Re: David Amerson
The coaching staff and the players have improved dramatically and especially in the recent games - there were "issues" during the first 8 games
everything from the play calling on both defense & offense is better - the players have responded with much more confidence on the field
this team is playing much better and being coached much better than we saw in the first half of the season
everything from the play calling on both defense & offense is better - the players have responded with much more confidence on the field

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Re: David Amerson
This is what Tandler wrote about Dunbar today btw:
Good stuff. I hear you about Amerson though, man. It IS frustrating.
It’s really amazing that Quinton Dunbar is out there every week lined up opposite the likes of Odell Beckham Jr., Sammy Watkins, and Jordan Matthews. And nobody is even nervous about it. Per Pro Football Focus, quarterbacks have a 70.1 pass rating when throwing at Dunbar, who came to training camp as a wide receiver. Like most, I figured that he would be a project who would spend the year on the practice squad learning the new position. But when injuries struck the secondary he emerged off of the practice squad and lined up against Beckham.
Good stuff. I hear you about Amerson though, man. It IS frustrating.

Re: David Amerson
The defense is playing well, in particular, I think Kerrigan, Smith, Compton and Foster and the LB's have played very well.
Re: David Amerson
Man a few wins and everyone loses their objecitivity with this team. If you think our secondary has been "superb" or the secondary coaching has been "superb" you need to go back and watch some of the games again. In particualr just the last one we played. Bradford, who is mediocre at best, threw all over us......and if he made a few more easy throws to guys running wide open, coupled with the fact that his receivers dropped 5+ balls, we would have given up 40+. Playoff teams are not going to drop these passes, and are not going to miss these throws to guys running wide open. We played three playoff teams this year and were crushed by all three. Our defense is much improved from last season, primarily because we do not have that moron Haslett calling plays anymore. We are still quite talent deficient on the back end.

Not "superb" in general, but "superb" in the production we've gotten from what we have to work with. Getting decent play out of a depleted roster that now has some undrafted backups starting is pretty "superb " to me.

Talent deficient for sure, and injury-ridden on top of that. Yet the defense has improved. That's saying something.

Very NICE to hear, since many here was "doggin" Joe B out ................for his poor Defensive showing. Yes, all our coaches seem to be doing a great job.

IMO still one of the most surprising things to NOT happen this year. I was certain when he was hired last year that Joe Barry would end up the new DC whipping boy for fans and media.
Sure it will happen some season in the future, but it was a pleasant surprise this year.
