What has Jay Gruden accomplished?
I've been sending 98% of my extreme displeasure for Jay Gruden to Jake via SMS... However, in lieu of yesterdays **** show... I figured that I'd share.
- Can someone tell me what this man has accomplished since coming here?
- Can someone give me one or two example of Jay Gruden showing good coaching attributes?
- The best thing that I can say is that his time management isn't AS bad this year.
- And don't feed me a bunch of BS that he needs time to grow. This is the NFL, you're either an NFL HC or not at this point. He's 2 years in.
- This offensive guru hasn't improved the offense at all... It's actually regressed. The running game is worse, it's down right horrific. They average 1.8 YPC on MNF, if I'm not mistaken. The QB position is simply better by default, because we have a guy back there that can AT LEAST decipher a defense.
- Darrell Young... Where'd he go? One of the best FB's in the league. One of the best FOOTBALL PLAYERS on this team. Yet the Guru, the Mastermind Jay Gruden can't find work for him.
- He was brought in to revive RGIII? Failed miserably and arguably didn't really even try. Granted RGIII is largely responsible for this.
I'm all for continuity but not for the sake of just doing it. There has to be some glimmer of hope/progress. IMO, I can't trace back too much of our progress to Jay or McVay specifically. I can trace it back to this years draft. I can trace if back to our FA acquisitions. Obviously, those things lead back to Scot Mccloughan. And I don't think it to be a coincidence that the hammer was brought down on RGIII after his arrival. Jay didn't have the authority to do it, hell... Jay was forced to name RGIII the starter in Feb.
So again? What has Jay Gruden improved/accomplished since coming here?

Chris, I’m on record as saying that I didn’t want Gruden, for the record I wanted Bowles. That said I’m willing to give Gruden three years. He has improved a bit this year in his play calling, last night notwithstanding, putting 8 linemen in the game to try and run?? This isn’t HS football. I will say there has been no drama this year; the team seems to like and support him, so there’s that. We knew this team wasn’t going to be good this year, but they’ve competed, they are moving in the right direction IMO. It takes time; by his own admittance he said he tried to manage too much last year. He said he under estimated the position, not many coached will admit that. I think he’s improved enough to coach next year…

And they still couldn't muster more than 2 YPC.

I don't attribute that to Jay. Scot has instilled fear into this team. You WILL be replaced if you don't produce. Whereas, before Scot was here. We'd trot out the same trash every week, hoping for a diff result. You've seen the reports, Scot sits in a chair and watches practice. He sits in the common areas around Redskins park and openly grades/scouts players. He makes his presence known that he is watching.
Jay is a dope. And any respect he has, is out of fear of Scot.
DEHog wrote:We knew this team wasn’t going to be good this year, but they’ve competed, they are moving in the right direction IMO.
I'm not looking for wins. I'm looking for intangibles. I've loved the resiliency, the heart and pride shown thus far.

If the right coach is available this year, I want him. I'm just at a point in my life where I'm not wasting time on something that's not working. Scrap it.

I feel your frustrations, but changing coaches every 2-3 years just isn’t a good recipe for success. I agree that Scot has had an impact but it’s still Gruden in the locker room and for whatever reasons, (maybe the benching of RG) this team has rallied around him. I just think it’s more of a personnel issue, we need to get better at picking and developing our own players and I’ve seen some of that this year.

I don't want to switch coaches. And at the same time, I don't want to waste time going down a dead end street. If he's just gonna get fired in a year anyway, why wait? lol The only reason to wait, is if the coach you want won't be available for another year.

I get DEHog's position (and he and I had this exact conversation in a different thread about a month ago). But I'm with you. The guy has shown nothing to me that he's a good head coach. Hell at this point, he's not even good at directing the offense.
It should be absolutely shocking to everyone here just how bad this rushing offense is. It went from a top 5 rushing attack two years ago, to 19th last year, to 26th this year. Ridiculous.
We have better talent on the offensive line, better runningbacks (I'd say AlMo plus Matt Jones is better than AlMo alone in 2013), and...we're significantly worse. Makes zero sense.
Why waste time with Gruden for more years for the sake of consistency? It's not as if he's some fantastic player development coach. And any new coach will probably have a different system requiring different players. So why waste more time stocking this team with players who fit Gruden's system? Why not get a coach who we want, get players who fit his system, and let the players develop in that system?
But in all honesty, he's probably here next year anyways. His fully guaranteed contract tells me that. I can see Snyder firing him after next year (another wasted year), and eating a $10 million chunk. $15 million after this year is a bit much.

Thought about responding to this and several other of the unsurprising, whiny, we lost a close game against the Cowboys now the sky is falling posts. Just not going to waste a lot of time on it this week. Boo hoo. We lost to the Cowboys on a Monday night game. When does that ever happen?
This team was predicted to finish dead last in the NFL by pretty much everyone this year. I see a team that is out there playing with heart and playing meaningful games in December. The team has been brutalized by injuries all year long, but they're out there playing for the team and apparently for their coach. Personally I'm just going to enjoy the ride the rest of the way.
No idea if Gruden is the man for the job long term or not. I'll give you one undeniable accomplishment though. He told Snyder the truth that RG3 was not up to the task, and instead of getting to watch that ridiculous Griffin *sh$t* show all season long we've played like a legit football team and we've had a season worth watching.
See you guys in a week or so!

This...I went all in on this in September, we are and will be playing meaningful games in December...So IMO Gruden is here next year.

If we want to attract a good Head Coach, we may need to give Gruden a 3rd year for the sake of advertising some stability. I don't think good NFL coaching candidates will want to put up with the same ol' Redskins and their carousel.

Re: What has Jay Gruden accomplished?
I am one that despises what Danny boy has brought to this franchise ---- and a big part of that is turnover and a lack of continuity. That being said, I do NOT think Gruden is a great playcaller -- in any regard. I do like the decisions he makes as they relate to personnel (whether that is Scot of him I'm not sure but I would assume that the HC has a large say in who starts).
If I were Scot, I would keep him next year ONLY IF he fired the OC and hired a quality OC WITH playcalling duties. We are finally seeing a team that we can build on. We have YOUNG pieces that we haven't had in decades. Whether people want to admit it or not, we have improved from 2 years ago, and again last year and into this year.
Fire the OC, don't hire Callahan as OC, get someone that can call plays, and see how that works out next year. Firing the HC and all his staff after 2 years isn't the best choice given this organizations Snyder-era history as well as the personnel we have in place. Issue Gruden an ironic "code red" on his job for 2016 and see how it plays out.

Re: What has Jay Gruden accomplished?
Well, we are in a tie for 1st place in the NC East. Of course, all 3 teams have 5 wins each. 5 wins is more than we had last year, and the year before.
I'm somewhat torn. For some reason, Jay Gruden appears kind of weak to me. He appears to lack confidence and self-assurance. Maybe that's just my own mistaken profiling.
In the NFL, you can have a grand season one year and a total dud the next. I remember Panthers fans that were ready send Ron Rivera packing. Now, they have the only undefeated team in the NFL.
I'm not an incredible football mind, so my calculations are hardly anything to take seriously. It is very disconcerting that our rushing offense totally flipped position. Gruden was hired based on his alleged offensive prowess. I don't see it. Cincinnati is doing very well offensively without him.
The NFL is full of mediocre teams. It's full of mediocre coaches.
Personally, I don't think Jay Gruden is a promising head coach at all.

Re: What has Jay Gruden accomplished?
Hopefully Gruen's coaching career here is a decision made by our GM. I personally don't see Jay being fired unless Scot has a replacement coach in mind and sells it to Danny. I'm hopeful Dan has given Scot the authority to make this call, (wishful thinking) obviously Dan's buy off would have to be given but if he's fired for any other reason than Scot making the call then it'll be the wrong decision. This team has definitely improved, but like others have said it seems more due to personnel and mindset than it does coaching although Jay certainly has played a role in some of it.
The run game being as bad as it is with who's supposed to be the best OL coach in the league, an all pro LT, a top 10 pick at LG, a decent passing game and good rb's is inexcusable but i don't know where the blame lies. I know we have 4 first year starters on the OL and am willing to give them time to learn but it's clear we cannot run the ball against a capable defensive front and that cannot be all talent gap. The Cowboys D line is merely decent and completely dominated the line of scrimmage, we consistently get no push up front and the other teams can game plan easily for our first down calls. The play calling is terrible and our in game adjustments usually do not seem good. Listening to cooley, portis and santana on the redskins site (mmrr sessions) seems like they hate the play calling as well and insinuate possibly Kirk doesn't have the authority to make some audibles or calls. If they are right in that, then either Kirk is not capable or Jay doesn't trust him.

Re: What has Jay Gruden accomplished?
Even if you think Jay Gruden is a steaming pile of cow manure there is one underlying problem:
We have Jay Gruden as a head coach because no one with more credibility wanted the job.
What makes anyone think that has changed?
You think Bill Cowher or Jon Gruden or anyone else with a modicum of success is going to be champing at the bit to coach this team?
No. We're going to end up with worse, some college coach who doesn't know jack about the NFL game or some coordinator who isn't qualified to be a head coach because those are the only people who would take the job. Hell, even some good coordinators didn't want the job. Darrell Bevel. Vic Fangio. How soon we forget what an epic disaster finding a head coach was after the most qualified one we could possibly have hired in Mike Shanahan was summarily dismissed.
Joe Gibbs is retired. We had better get used to having unqualified head coaches and free agents going elsewhere because with all the crapola Dan Snyder has pulled that's all we're getting.
Given that, we had better keep Jay "Dindu Nuffin To Keep The Job" Gruden until the team improves player personnel and loses the reputation for Dan Snyder being a meddler.

So Jay is the only guy available huh? lol. Man stop it, we didn't even really go after no one else. Dan Snyder wanted Jay because he was the next best thing to Jon and had the Gruden name. Same way with Mike Shanahan. Snyder had a love affair with the guy from jump and knew who he was going to hire.

No Danny just has to pay more...You telling me Todd Bowles (who signed with the Jets for 4 years 16mil) wouldn't have taken Gruden's 5 year 20+mil deal ?

I'd like to think he would have preferred to coach in Washington but nothing substantiates that thought. I have absolutely no proof he wanted to work in D.C. in any capacity. The team he is coaching has a lot more talent than the 2015 Washington Redskins, especially on defense, which is, of course, Bowles' strength.

Yea but it was after the 2013 season, don't think he got any offers that year??

Keeping Jay Gruden 20 years won't fix that reputation.
He's here for another year purely because of that contract. But he should be on the hottest of hot seats next year (and no that doesn't mean fire him midseason because that never works anyways).
He's shown zilch that makes me think he can be a head coach. The team doesn't adapt at half time, the team comes out flat in important games, he can't win on the road, and he's only won 2 games in a row ONCE. He's a supposed offensive coach, but his offensive game plans and calls are uninspired, and Cincinnati certainly hasn't missed him.
This is not the track record of a successful coach.

Agreed. I'd just like to know we have more appealing options before we change head coaches yet again.

I'm NOT a Jay Gruden fan but I do think we need to give Scot another season to better establish this franchise and make it "more attractive"
HOWEVER
IF, after this season, Scot wants to make a coaching change or thinks a coaching change should be made, then, I'm all for it
we are not quite ready for prime time yet and I would not be surprised to have Jay Gruden back here next season

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Scot doesn't need another season for his reputation to outshine all of the f***ery that Snyder done. Scot is one of, if not the best GM/Scout in the league. In one off-season, he's injected more talent via FA/Draft than the last decade combined.

I want Russ Grimm to coach the Redskins.
Re: What has Jay Gruden accomplished?
me too welch ... CLL - I think you may be right in that this franchise is already clearly not as dysfunctional as it was BS (before Scot)
I'm sure that Scot & the FO have been looking at what they've got as far as both players and coaches are concerned and will make the moves they think they need to do - I'm also a lot more confident that Snyder has indeed backed off some and while he's still the owner, he's not the meddling force that he was - Scot was out of a job for reasons that most of us are aware of but his previous resume and what he's accomplished here should have him back as one of the best GMs in the game at this time
the players and coaches here have had a whole season to make their case for staying here and I trust Scot's evaluation
why not make changes if these guys think they make the club better - we're a couple more drafts away anyway
winning the NFC East this season is still possible but lets be real here - this division really sucks this year

the players and coaches here have had a whole season to make their case for staying here and I trust Scot's evaluation
why not make changes if these guys think they make the club better - we're a couple more drafts away anyway

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
