“I think Gruden’s doing a sensational job though with this team,” he told 106.7 The Fan’s Chad Dukes on Wednesday. “Watching every single team on film each week, you get a sense for who does what and who’s tailoring their game plans and still operating within the confines of their system, and I think Washington does as good a job as almost any team in the league at that, especially when you consider that they really don’t have the quarterback they want.”
“So, Gruden, I don’t know how your listeners feel about him,” he said, “I don’t know what his reputation is there on the east coast.”
“They hate him,” Dukes replied.
“They hate him? Yeah, that’s easy to do and it’s totally ridiculous,” Benoit said. “Because there’s no reasoning for it whatsoever. That’s just the guy that they label the head coach and assume that anything that goes wrong is his fault. Gruden, he’s a top ten NFL head coach right now, just going by game-planning.”

SI Writer Labels Gruden One Of NFL's Ten Best Head Coaches
Andy Benoit, a writer for Sports Illustrated’s The MMQB, praised Gruden’s ability to properly game-plan for opponents.
“He was at that time the smartest player in the league. We did everything we could to try to eliminate him from the play. We knew if we didn’t neutralize him, then we had less of a chance of winning.” - John Hannah on Chris Hanburger
Re: SI Writer Labels Gruden One Of NFL's Ten Best Head Coach
Let see off the top of my head…Belichick, Carroll, Payton, Fox, Tomlin, McCarthy, Reid, Lewis, Harbaugh, Arians, Fisher, Coughlin are all better IMO opinion. Of the new coaches I’d take Bowles or Quinn before Gruden…so top ten is a bit of a stretch.

We should have taken Bowles.

Jay Gruden is not one of the top 10 HCs in the NFL - while he's not doing a terrible job - his future here is being evaluated - 11 games to go

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Yes we should have!! I was screaming for him two years ago. I’ve wanted a defensive coach for a while…the rules are so skewed in favor of the offense that it take great defensive coaches to counter the advantages the offense has.

It's not he's one of the best 10 coaches in the NFL.
It's by game planning. There's a hell of a lot more to being a head coach than game planning, like handling personnel, morale, training, etc.
Which I do find interesting as his offense seems conceptually to work, but the actual calls sometime leave things to be desired.
Sort of like how Andy Reid is great at planning a game, but is horrific at making actual halftime adjustments.

This reminds me of this famous John McKay quote:
Tampa Bay Buccaneers head football coach John McKay (1923-2001) was asked by a reporter after a loss what he thought about the execution of the team’s offense. “I’m in favor of it (execution—ed.),” McKay replied. The joke quickly became a sports classic.
The line has been cited in print since at least November 22, 1979. The citation indicated that McKay’s remark had been made “after his Tampa Bay Bucs lost a game recently.”
“What do you think of the musician’s execution?"/"I’m in favor of it” is a performing arts version of the joke that became popular in the early 1900s.

Re: SI Writer Labels Gruden One Of NFL's Ten Best Head Coach
Halftime adjustments are overrated. Great teams make adjustments on the fly play by play.
We have all seen Peyton Manning survey the field pre snap. He audibles to a play that he thinks
will have the best outcome.
Ray Lewis used to captain his defense and call a defense he thought would be suitable for the situation as well.

A) No other quarterback in the league is his own offensive coordinator. Only Peyton Manning is allowed to call his own plays every snap. That's not a typical situation.
B) Ray Lewis is over-rated. He may have called defensive plays but without the other ten players on that defense he's a big mouth and not much else. Monte Coleman was Ray Lewis without the disappearing murder charge and the "look at me" nonsense.
C) I think it's well established at this point the team lacks the talent to compete at a high level. Scot McCloughan has had ONE offseason to right the ship. He needs one or two more.
D) When you're in the game, why change what is keeping you in the game? There's nothing to adjust in that case.

Adjustments area a necessity both offense and defense. Take the Atlanta game, there seemed to be no adjustment for the constant beating Williams took on the left side. He got beat almost every play and there was no change to help him. The defense played the same schemes in the second half as they did in the first half and got beaten in the run category. Even when it was apparent that the Falcons had figured out the defense, there was no adjustment and the Falcons seemed to run at will.

yeah? I'm curious what adjustment you would have made to help our pro bowl left tackle not get beat.

Its funny to hear comments like these about Gruden. I swear four weeks ago some of these writers were still putting out the "Gruden looks completely lost out there" line.
I think he's unquestionably a good offensive coordinator. Still remains to be seen if he has what it takes to be a successful head coach or not. Gotta give him some credit for the coaching staff he's assembled for this year though.

I agree with you there. Though I questioned the choice of Barry at first, Callahan was a master stroke. And Barry has turned out to be better than I had expected.
Certainly better than "BLITZ EVERYONE" Haslett.

absolutely - Gruden's under the gun here but he's done a good job so far - these 'rankings' are just a media thing

The Miami Dolphins are expected to make a "splash" move this offseason when it comes to finding a new coach. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora reported Sunday morning owner Stephen Ross might be interested in chasing Saints coach Sean Payton via trade

I have a positive view of Gurden. I like his WCO, I think he is a good partner with Scot, I am please he and Scot stood up to Snyder and named Cousins the starter and I think the team is definitely better than last year. I think they have done an especially good job of plowing ahead in light of the injuries, I am hopeful Scot, Jay and Kirk form a nice triad for a decade of stability and increasing success. My one major complaint at this point is the number of penalties. Jay and his coaches need to get that ironed out so the team can realize its 2015 potential and imbue the team culture with the game day discipline essential for championship level success.

now that is a classic case of over stating ... c'mon OS - the product on the field is better than it's been for a while but the jury is still out on the QB and the HC - I do hope that Scot and the FO will be given control over where we are going from here - I'm encouraged by what we've seen so far but there's no way that the HC and QB have done well enough that they are here for even 1 more season let alone for 10
