Darrell Green at Hampden-Sydney

Post by GoSkins »

Darrell Green, former Washington Redskin defensive back (#28) who played for 21 years, was on campus August 18 to speak to the members of the Hampden-Sydney Tiger Football Team. He was greeted by President Walter Bortz.

Green is the founder of the Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation that operates eight Youth Life Learning Centers (comprehensive after-school and full summer program services). "The Foundation helps to shape the lives of children whose family lives and circumstances have all too often limited their opportunities to realize potential. The Foundation is committed to nurturing the child, strengthening the family, and rebuilding the community." Green was recently appointed Chair of the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation.

Green spoke to the Hampden-Sydney football team about the importance of a life of faith, responsibility, and service.

At the end of his presentation Nick Ferrante '05, Team Captain, presented Green with a check for $1200 that the team members had contributed to Green's work with children.

On August 16, former Redskins players Charles Mann and Art Monk were also on campus to spend some time with the team at practice and to speak to the players.

Hampden-Sydney’s 2004 DIII football team is pre-season ranked #6 in the county by Sports Illustrated.

Justice would $3-$5K be to much for his fee?

Not if the fee goes to his foundation (this doesn't include they check they gave him). If he pockets the money for himself, that (IMO) would be sad.

Justice in your honest opinion what do you think about atheletes that charge $3-$5k to show up for night club promotions.

I can't believe this. Nothing has been mentioned about what Darrell specifically said. In my view there should be no bashing on this website. Besides, if you don't have anything good to say about a Redskin legend then don't say anything.

We should not bash any redskin legends? You mean EVER? Who determines who is a legend and who isn't anyway?

What if the "legend" pulled an OJ? Would it be ok to bash him then?

Look, as far as I can tell I did not violate any board rules.

Plenty of people sing his praises. I think he was a great PLAYER too and I think he does good things for the community with his youth centers, but in my view, some of his personal beliefs are absolutely despicable. I feel I am fully within my rights to give that opinion in the manor I did on the board.

I will not bash other members on this board since this is not the smack forum but players are fair game last time I checked.

Wormer. There was no basis for you to bash D. Green. And yes you did bash him. Unless a "Legend" specifically does something wrong, and by that I mean illegal or unethical, leave'em alone.

I mean c'mon, every time somebody mentions D. Green you have to hear about this, that and the other that he did wrong. I mean yeah, he did some cruddy stuff, but after hearing about it 10-20 times over the past year, it gets kinda repetitive.

Remember DG for what he did on the field for us. 20 years with oneteam is unheard of. 20 good years is almost impossible but he did it.

Gambit....to answer your question, if any pro player wants to charge a fee to show up somewhere, that's cool. I just think it's bad taste if they charge a fee to show up at a charity or similar event.

Yeah no bashing D. Green. Hampton Sydney should be able to afford it whatever it would cost to have him speak. Thats kind of a rich boy college isn't it?

I think the crux of JH's initial post was, if Darrell took home more pay for speaking than he earned for his charity, it could be conceived as slightly hypocritical. If Darrell spoke for free, and took a donation to his charity in lieu of a speaking fee, then it's all good.
Nothing wrong there.
I am among Darrell Green's biggest fans as a Redskin, and one of his biggest detractors as a public figure. I think he's one of the least fan-conscious players ever to earn such status as he has. I also think he's a shill, in the truest sense of the word.
Further, I think he's one of the best pure cornerbacks ever to grace the field of any team, and that he should be a first-ballot Hall Of Famer. He should be headed to Canton downhill on rollerskates.
It is possible for these views to coexist.

Hi everyone,
Maybe it's because I'm new, but I've never heard anything bad about him. Why all the animosity?

Darrell did NOT get paid for his appearance. He did it as a gesture to a very good friend and supporter, the President Emeritus of the College, General Sam Wilson. The donation made to Darrell's charity was NOT a quid pro quo. It was given out of RESPECT for Darrell and what he has done with his foundation.

its not skeptics exactly. everyone here knows what DG meant on the field, but some people here have had the misfortune to meet the real DG. :(

I for one have had the chance on several occasions to meet Mr. Green and I can say that the image was tarnished to the point that I would say I am not a fan of his. On the field, lights out, no doubt HOF'er. Off the field, on the short list of classless individuals I have met. To avoid hitting the replay button, I will step off the soap box knowing that he lost alot of supporters with his performance at last years Ken Harvey event. If you were there, you know what I mean.

Well, then...the old adage is true. There is a first time for everything.
Your feelings for DG aren't misplaced. He was a superb player for many, many years. He was a great Redskin, and a fine role model for youth. No wife-beatings, arrests, no "nolo contendere" pleas...
You'd have to ask Schottenheimer where Darrell's heart was in his last five years. You'd also have to ask Snyder why Green came back for the 2002 season after 9/11. Finally, you'd have to ask those here who've met the man.
As I wrote, you can idolize the player, if not the man.
See Jake v. Donnie Warren for more details.
