Ex-Redskins TE Fred Davis reinstated from suspension

Former Washington Redskins tight end Fred Davis is free to sign with an NFL team after more than a year away from the game.

Suspended indefinitely in February of 2014 for repeated violations of the league's substance abuse policy, Davis has been reinstated to the NFL, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, via a source informed of the league's decision.

Pro Football Talk first reported Davis' reinstatement.

Once viewed as a Pro Bowl talent, Davis enjoyed a career year with 59 receptions and 796 yards in an impressive 2011 season with the Redskins.

Now 29 years old, Davis has managed a combined 31 catches, 395 yards and one touchdown in three years since that campaign.

He played his best ball under former Redskins coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who is now running Atlanta's offense. The Falcons also took fliers on Jacob Tamme and Tony Moeaki, two veteran tight ends well past the prime of their respective careers.

It will be interesting to see how much interest Davis generates now that he's back on the open market.

LOL.. this is funny because lets just say we do sign him, can you imagine what would happen?

Davis- Suspended for smoking weed in MD (or banned at this point)
Reed- Injured.. again

We'd be up *s* creek for sure with those two.

Fortunately, the Pats made this moot. He will kick ass there... until he doesn't... LOL

as a very frustrated fan, I get a little satisfaction when I read about guys like this that have so much talent and tiny little brains

Fred, do us all a favor and just go far, far away ... and wherever you end up, do the world a favor and please don't have children
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

Given our current situation, maybe even Davis could be an option. Yes, it's that bad.

He was unable to stick with the Patriots. If ANYONE can get something from a talented nere-do-well, it's Belichick. A player of his talent gets cut, there is a reason. There is no reason for this team to waste someone else's roster spot on him.

^^ what he said - I understand that we're really hurting for TEs, but give me a break - we do not need this guy here ...

It is hard to believe the draft where they had three second round picks they chose Devin Thomas, Malcolm Kelly and Fred Davis. They could have had guys who also went in the second round like Jordy Neslon, Matt Forte, DeSean Jackson (who ended up here anyway). Then there was Ray Rice, who went in the late second, but that's a story for another day.

the Redskins draft picks in the past 15 years have not been stellar - there's a different sheriff in town now ... :D
