Who wants to see a Cooley comeback?

Post by tribeofjudah »

"If I went to camp, I could be anybody's third tight end, worst case," Cooley said. "I have no doubt. Any team in the NFL, I could be their third tight end. There's not a question in my mind."

His speed wasn't the same in 2012, but it's worth noting that current 'Skins coach Jay Gruden -- then with the Bengals -- was one of two assistants interested in pursuing Cooley the following season, before being told that the nine-year veteran was finished with football.

While I enjoyed watching Cooley play, I don't think it would be a good idea for him to come back. I would hate to see him either go through a year of humiliation or the humiliation of being cut. Almost every player thinks they could still start. I really do not remember any that did.

He was my favorite player during his playing days. I don't what he has left and whether it would be wise to attempt a comeback. I do know the Skins have needed better TE play than we have gotten since he left maybe he could help. If he tries to comeback and fails it might be painful for him but it would close the door for him which may be helpful for him. I hope he was smart with his money and isn't coming back because he needs the paycheck hopefully his media gig is bringing in enough that a comeback attempt is for the joy of playing.

Cooley is what, 33 years old? If the Skins are willing to bring him in to camp why the hell not! :)

On the flip side, I wouldn't be dying to see C00ley make a move like this. Its awesome that he's on the radio now and part of the Redskins broadcast team. I'm pretty happy that he's still around the team in that capacity.

Loved Cooley as a player, but he was noticeably slower even a few years ago, and I can't imagine sitting around on a radio show and not playing football would actually increase his speed.

I like C00ley as is on the radio, but would love to see him come back to play as long it was as a Redskin.

I would wish him well in the attempt and cheer for him (except against the Skins).

I have to say that I can hardly imagine him pulling it off, though. He was a different player after that concussion, seemingly in a fog and having lost a step. Even if he's mentally recovered, what are the odds that he's back to playing form at 33 years old, nearly six years since he last saw consistent NFL action?

It sounds like he's aware that he might be over-estimating his ability to still play, but I do hope he at least gets a tryout so that he won't spend the rest of his life wondering if he could have done it.

As much as I love when the old vets dust off the cleats to show the new bloods they still have it, Cooley's pretty much done. Like Irn Bru said, Cooley lost a step and I don't think he had many steps to lose in the first place. He wasn't a really big or fast TE, but compensated for his lack of athleticism by making good decisions, running good routes, and having solid hands. That doesn't leave much margin for error.

He's still one of my favorite Redskins. I drafted him in my fantasy league in his rookie year after seeing him play the preseason. "Who the ____ is 'Chris Cooley'?" was the response and I had to tell them what position he played so they could write it on the board. They learned fast. : )

Ugh... If Cooley ever comes back he should try to come here because Reed is glass ready to break.
He said he wouldn't mind being the 3rd string and that's fine by me with our other guys in front of him.
However, if he plays for someone else.. to hell with Cooley and I'm only going to hope he doesn't get hurt but still, no well-wishes.

I hear 3 of 4 decision makers for Skins are on board. The other, not so much.

Cooley is a stud (or was).....but why not give him a shot....?

To be perfectly honest, I thought this was all a publicity stunt for his radio show. I had no idea he was serious about coming back.

From that article, it says that's Cooley's report, and that he (Cooley) says the fourth decision maker is "strongly averse."

I have to believe that it's McCloughan who's against. Could it be anyone else?

I don't want him back here, it's noting personal against him. But it's this type of move that has kept this franchise in the pits. Honestly, his begging has been very off-putting.

Thank goodness Scot knows better, and this has shown us that he has full control. Right/wrong/indifferent.

C00ley can't play for the Skins this year because of his radio contract per NFL rules.

It has to be SM or Dan. The other 2 don't have veto power.
