Re: Best Redskins Player of All-Time?
Pitting Monk against Brown — that's cruel.
I don't know how the bracket will break down, but I'd most like to see a Monk, (Sean) Taylor, Sonny, and Darrell Green final four. Ooh, but then no Hogs? That doesn't seem right. (Speaking of which, kick out Moseley to make room for Jacoby, I say. No offense to kickers, but, you are kickers, a fluke-ish MVP notwithstanding.)

Somebody forgot Sammy Baugh?
We all mourn Sean Taylor, but Charlie Taylor retired as the all-time leading receiver in the NFL...after beginning as a running back, and the rookie-of-the-year, in fact. Charlie Taylor was about three inches taller and 20 pounds heavier than wide receivers, he was faster than nearly all DB's, and his cut-back could cause defenders to fall out of their shoes. He was so big, so fast, so strong, so agile, and had such good hands that he would probably be number one WR on any team today...even though humans are generally bigger than when Charley Taylor played. When Otto Graham moved Taylor to WR, it was like the invention of nuclear weapons.
As for the "Ravens", the all-time best has to be Jim Brown...and I'll let Bal'mer experts try to remember when Brown played there.

He was as good as I ever saw. Kind of cross between Gale Sayers and Jerry Rice.
High school career
Taylor attended and played high school football at Dalworth High School (the former segregated black high school, now an elementary school by the name of David Daniels. Dalworth High students moved to Grand Prairie High School).[1] He also ran the high hurdles, threw the discus and shot put, and competed in the long jump for the track team. The school did not have a baseball team, but Taylor played baseball in a summer league. He was named All-State in track and football.
College career
Taylor attended and played college football at Arizona State University as a halfback and defensive back. He was selected as an All-American two years in a row and was also selected to the All-Western Athletic Conference team. Following his final season, he played in the East-West Shrine Game, the Hula Bowl, and the All-American Bowl. He also played in the College All-Star Game against the Chicago Bears and was named the Most Valuable Player of the game. Taylor also pitched and played third base for the school’s baseball team. However, during baseball practice, he was hit on a knee by a line drive, which ended his baseball career.
Taylor was inducted into the Arizona State Sports Hall of Fame as a charter member in 1975.
Professional career
Taylor was drafted in the first round (third overall) of the 1964 NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. He won the UPI NFL-NFC Rookie of the Year award as a running back and became the first rookie in 20 years to finish in the NFL's top 10 in both rushing (sixth with 755 yards) and receiving (eight with 53 catches for 814 yards). His 53 receptions were a record for running backs at that time.
Although known as a successful running back, Taylor was switched to wide receiver in 1966 and led the NFL in receiving in both 1966 and 1967. He would play that position for the rest of his career and had a record-tying seven seasons with 50 or more receptions. On December 21, 1975, Taylor became the NFL's all-time receptions leader with his 634th career catch in the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Taylor retired after the 1977 season as the NFL's all time leading receiver with 649 receptions for 9,110 yards and 79 touchdowns. With 1,488 yards rushing and some kick return yardage, he totaled 10,803 combined net yards. With 11 rushing touchdowns and 79 on receptions, Taylor scored 540 points in his career. He earned first- or second-team All-NFL honors six times and was selected to play in eight Pro Bowls.
Taylor was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1984 and was selected as one of the 70 Greatest Redskins of all time. In 1999, he was ranked number 85 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.

Yeah that was kind of my thought as well, welch. Charley Taylor was before my time, but he's a hall of famer and I knew enough Redskins history that I had to give him my vote even though I'm a huge ST fan like we all are. He was the Skins WR coach for 12 years as well, coaching guys like Monk!

Nope... Charlie Taylor... primarily because Sean didn't play for long enough... Charlie Taylor was a jewel... Big... Tough... Fast... Team player... let his play do his talking.

Re: Best Redskins Player of All-Time?
If time is a significant factor, then yes, it's hard to see Sean Taylor as being at the top of this list. I personally didn't have that in mind. Sean Taylor is the best athlete and football player I have ever seen in a Redskins uniform (admittedly, that only goes back 20+ years), so if that's my criteria then he'll be pretty high on my list.

Sad. It is what it is... Unfortunately, youth is a handicap in cases such as this. Charlie Taylor had a transcendent talent... He would still be dominant today!

Re: Best Redskins Player of All-Time?
I also agree that my "youth" would require me to choose players that I didn't watch game-in, game-out. My actual memory goes back to the late late 80s, early 90s. I believe that anyone under 45-50 years of age most likely can't truly answer this question on a first-hand basis.
For me, it was Green, Monk, Clark, Jacoby, Rypien, Portis, Samuels, Jansen, Moss.
Other than Green, I wouldn't expect any of those players to be in the "all-time" conversation.
That being said, there is only 1 SINGLE number formally retired by the organization................

RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

You don't believe Monk belongs in the all-time conversation?
And the poll is only for the SB era, so Slingin' Sammy doesn't qualify.

Not my all time personal favorite, but I totally understand and respect the case for D. Green.
I guess nobody will be surprised that my #1 would be #44. Ask Don McNeal who the best Redskins player of all time is...

Not my all time personal favorite, but I totally understand and respect the case for D. Green.
Just my votes in the order of the Poll, not my preferences in any particular order in that list.
As great as Green was, I would have picked C. Taylor or B. Mitchell above him. It is impossible to have Sonny without either of these two.
Monk will win this Poll overall if the votes makes any sense. Respect.

What is even more remarkable, it is that the "the quiet man" was a great person throughout his whole life. Riggins was a great player, close to Monk, but when anybody goes back in memory lane and we needed a clutch play or a new set of downs, Monk was the man. Tough as nails, humble and generous, a true example to past, present and future generations on and off the field. He was never "bored, broke, and back" because he never left until retirement.
