Film of Redskins / Lions, 1943

Post by welch »

Stumbled across this half-hour film, in color and slow-motion, of the Redskins / Lions in 1943. No sound.

Sammy Baugh is slick and accurate. Seems to throw a pass because he wants to...a normal part of the offense. Lions seem to call a pass and just hope. Their tailback -- both teams running the grand old single-wing -- must be a runner who had not learned passing.

I think Baugh also intercepts a pass in the first half. Of course, Sammy does all the punting, too. Try playing safety, Tom Brady...

Awesome footage, welch. Thanks for posting it!

I saw two Baugh interceptions as I skipped around (wish I could watch it all right now). One was right over the middle with a great return. The second was a beautiful pick as he crossed the field like Sean Taylor and snatched it just as the receiver was looking for the ball over his shoulder. Made a great effort to keep both feet in bounds.

I am very envious of you guys who were able to watch those greats in action when football was more hardcore with less rules.

I'm hoping there is a lot of footage missing, and that we really didn't quick-kick on 1st, 2nd, and 2nd downs on the first three drives.
