Giants settle for Miami OL Ereck Flowers after rivals swipe Scherff

The Giants wanted to take an offensive lineman in the first round of Thursday night’s NFL draft and had their eyes on Brandon Scherff, envisioning the Iowa stud as an immediate starter. But they knew Scherff might be off the board by the time the Giants picked at No. 9.

“We thought there was a chance he would go before us, maybe a pick or two, but not where he went,’’ said Marc Ross, the Giants’ vice president of player evaluation. “We felt really strongly going into it he probably would go ahead of us.’’

Indeed, Scherff was gone, even sooner than the Giants anticipated, as the Redskins — the NFC East rival Redskins, for goodness sakes — nabbed him at No. 5.

The Skins silence about Scherff was well orchestrated. Pretend we had minimal interest in him to get minds thinking and rolling. In the end, Scot and team had them ALL FOOLED.

Brandon Scherff and Leonard Williams are beasts. Both dominated in college. Scherff is the same height as Williams and outweighs him by 30 pounds. Both are likely to be good pros. It’s possible Scherff’s more of a sure thing than Williams. Scot seems to think so. He runs a 5.05 40 (loses to Williams by a step) and bench pressed 225 pounds 23 times (Williams passed on the bench???). His vertical jump beats Williams by 3 inches. His broad jump beats Williams by 1 inch. He beats Williams in the 3-cone by 4 tenths and loses in the shuttle by 4 hundredths – all with 30 extra pounds of muscle. Scherff not only lettered in several high school sports – he was awesome. He played at quarterback as a sophomore. He was all state as a senior offensive lineman. He had 200 yards receiving with 5 TDs as a junior. He lettered in baseball for 4 years. He was 2nd team all-conference in basketball. He lettered in tennis as a freshman. He was all state in track and holds the state record in the shot put.

I am convinced Scot thinks Brandon Scherff is a better athlete and football player than Leonard Williams. He went BPA – plain and simple.

You might be right about that. Personally though I think its character that put Scherff over the top. I remember reading that Post profile on him back in February and he just seems to be an all around, rock solid guy on and off the field.

Good stuff. I never bought into the chatter about him being a likely guard in the NFL. I guess we'll have to see if he struggles, but the college tape and early indications all say otherwise.

we're replacing players all over - this kid looks like he'll be a good one - who cares what position he's playing in 2017

Callahan will have a new group of offensive linemen in here pretty soon - the important thing for Brandon is to get ready to be a part of our O line for years to come - I could care less if he's a great tackle or a great guard - we just need him to be great and he looks the part

it's going to take time - this kid is a great addition



I swear - some here look at this season like "what do we need to do ... "

give me a break - let's let the FO and the coaches get this train wreck back on the tracks before we decide how quickly we're going to get there

Agree, for the main reason that Scot wouldn't have drafted a G with #5. I see no reason why anyone would think he's a G and not a T. He has the size to be a T. Short arms..... come on. The push off comes from the chest.
