I follow the Browns pretty closely. Courtney is oft injured, and oft over-looked.

Truth is... when he plays on the left side where he belongs, he's solid... on the right side... where the Browns keep trying to force him to succeed... he's very average. A lot of his sacks have come from the left side DESPITE the fact that he lines up on the right so much more often.

Now if they were to give him to the Skins for a song and a prayer...

... but the Browns wouldn't give him up for nothing, and besides that, his cap number is way too hefty for the Skins to take on.

In fact... his cap status precludes him from ANYTHING happening... at least until next march.

He has an $8.305M hit this year.
He has a $10M hit for 2005, and over $12M for 2006.

But if he doesn't have a Pro Bowl season for the Browns... he will be cut next March... because in restructuring his deal at the beginning of this season... he had a $2.5M roster bonus built in for 03/05.

So to recap... the Browns CAN'T really cut him... because they would owe him about $10M in signing bonus... though a lot of it would come next year.

They can't trade him for the above reason... you still have to pay the guy's signing bonus in cap world... even if you trade him.

If/when they cut him in March of 2005... the Browns would save over $6M in cap because they would have paid an extra year's cap allotment AND they would drop the aforementioned $2.5M roster bonus in one quick shot.

This is a perfect example of money pretty much dictating what will likely happen. Though as we saw in Trotter's case... sometimes Teams will just bite the bullet and eat it.

My 2 cents
Sean Taylor was one of a kind, may he rest in peace.

Sorry, BossHog, you lost me on that one. If the Courtney Brown has an $8.305 million cap figure this year, presumably a portion is from the prorated signing bonus and a portion from salary. If they were to trade him now, all the remaining signing bonus is accelerted to this year's cap. How would they still owe him $10 mil? They don't owe him anything once he's cut or traded.

My guess is that of the $8 million for 04, $3 mill is prorated signing bonus and $5 million is salary.

Most likely, the remaining prorated signing bonus is about equal to his cap hit this year, somewhere around 8 to 9 million. Therefore the cap impact for the Browns is pretty much nil. They neither save nor lose on the cap by trading or cutting Brown.

Now the Browns are unlikely to cut or even trade a player of Brown's potential for no cap savings.

As for the Skins and the cap number, if he's traded to the Skins, they would be responsible only for Brown's annual salary, which is probably about $5 million this year. That is probably manageable. Additionally, the Skins could restructure his contract, shifting part of the salary to signing bonus and prorate over future years, reducing his cap figure this year.

Did I miss something?

I say no, even with good DTs on that team he has not been able to produce the way a 1st overall pick should. Look at 1, 2, & 3, from the 2000 draft class

L. Arrington

I think we have the cream of that crop. =D>

To top it off, Courtney is injury prone, who needs that? [-X

Though the Cleveland fans want him out of town yesterday.

To describe him in two words is soft & brittle

I'm here in Ohio and best friends with a Browns fan. We are somewhat forced to watch bungles and brownies every Sunday, so I've seen him play. Even my buddy knows that we got the much better deal with LaVar rather than getting stuck with Brown. I would have to say a big fat NO! no matter what cap ramifications either team would have. All I have to say is that I'm really glad that Cleveland picked Brown #1 in the draft and let Arrington fall to the Skins at #2.

id love to pair up Arrington and Brown again, even though im partial to Brown because i threw a pass to him at the Penn State players hotel the game before Lavar n Courtney's last home game. He is an upgrade from what we have now and maybe a better Defensive scheme will help him get back on the right track.

yes you did... there's 3 years left on his contract... so in total he has that $3M in prorated bonus TIMES THREE... so he has a shade over 9M left in Signing bonus alone... it would all be accelerated to THIS season.

Where are the Redskins going to find 5M in cap space? I track the cap on a VERY regular basis and in order for us to drop 5M in cap space... we'd probably have to cut about 6-10 guys... AND we'd still be on the hook for any bonuses owed to these guys this year and next... creating MORE dead cap space.

And Brown's contract has already been restructured twice... so it'd be even harder to do it again... although... since the bonus would already be paid... his cap #'s would be down to about $5M in 2004, $6M in 2005 and $7.5M in 2006.

Still too high for the way he's performed to date.

In fact... the Browns rstructured his contract in April and were only able to shave about 500,000 of their cap figure this year. Largely because of the size of the existing contract and the fact that it had been re-worked and had tons of it moved from salary to guaranteed bonus money already.
