Who starts CB next year?

Post by Prowl33 »

Wondering what everyones opinion on CB is for next year? Who will start both spots? If we pick up someone who would you prefer?

Im thinking there is no doubt that breeland not only starts, but will be our guy covering #1 receivers.

Im worried D Hall wont be a healthy alternative anymore. He tore his Achilles twice, I would imagine for someone who needs to backpeddle a lot that may be an issue.

Will Amerson be good enough in his 3rd year? Or will we need to upgrade that position and have Amerson as a #3? Im thinking and hoping that Amerson is at the point now where 1 more off season and a good new coordinator will put him exactly where we need him to be to not only be a starter, but be that ball hawk we drafted him to be.

I think we are ok for CB's, let DH be the boss tutoring the young guns and his playing time limited. We do need to replace Breeland on the practice squad, that's the proper way to do things. I like Amerson, I don't see him as an aggressive ball hawk. If oppertunity arises he'll be there but I don't see him playing on the edge, I see him as a solid conservative player that owns his patch of the field. Breeland owns his patch and some of the receivers'.

We are OK at corner when playing man. We are either too stoopid to play zone, the coaching was horrific in communicating assignments in zone, or both.

Darth, I think you know proper play better than I. But where I see zone failure is on the LB's and CB's communication and one of the LB's (that shall remain nameless) just can't get there in coverage. A weak link that affects how the CB's play.
If I'm wrong then sayso, I got no problem with that.

I dunno about th last part bit I do agree about communication being a big part of our woes.. it seems the cb and Safties are besides themselves after every big play they give up on who had this widebopen wide out. I think coaching is a big part of that tho- especially when the designed play has said LB responsible for their biggest fastest BEST wr!!! Thats ALL on Jim. Once and it slides.. but multiple times and im looking at coach like WTF?!/

D Hall Anerson and Breeland sounds like a decent group.. only how does Hall recover (not getting younger) and can Amerson progress where he's fallen flat.

The ne DC BETTER play these guys closer to the line and use their physicality- giving up a cushion as far as the goalnline or the first down yardage just blowns my freaking mind!

I see Hall moving to the slot with Amerson & Breeland starting.

All of them need to learn to turn their heads and look back at the QB while keeping track of the receiver with their hand. We get so many PI penalties because they don't look back. :explode:

No doubt, eh? I always think the Breeland love in DC is pretty funny (and I count myself among those who like him). I don't have the impression that he's viewed quite the same way by more objective observers. :)

I'm hoping Amerson can bounce back from last year. Maybe some combination of experience, a little better coaching, and better play from the defense overall will help him get there.

D. Hall seems like the biggest question mark IMO. He was basically injured/surgery twice in the past six months, older coming off a significant injury and counts $4.8 million against the cap next year. Not sure I would be ready to pencil him in to even be on the roster much less start for us next season. Thoughts?

I agree with that to an extent... the thing is Hall is vevveveeery talented and a great leader and motivator. I really think we should explore using him as a safety... we have so many needs to fill as it is... finding 2; new safeties plus add depth is not realistic... but putting Hall inn a position that his previous injury wont effect him as much (think how important the achilles is when back peddling) and he can use his excellent judgement and ability to read the qb to use.

Breeland I think will be great because he shows the physical ability... but he just WANTS it more than anyone. He is a true first in last out live and breathe football player. His coaches like Haslett would even talk about how he would go back to the facility hours after everyone left to study film... send midnight text messages asking questions, etc

Guess we'll see. I'm a big D. Hall fan and think he's been a "real Redskin" during his time here. I agree with your comments about his leadership for sure. I'm just not sure his age and salary will fit in with rebuilding the team. It seems like they've been talking forever about moving him to safety too.

Oh yeah, trust me I'm optimistic about him too. It just makes me laugh a bit that we Redskins fans really seem to rate him much higher than anybody else at this point. Which is not to say that he won't continue to grow into a quality corner and player.

Either way, good question about the CBs.

In regards to Phillip Thomas and David Amerson... new players can easily be held back by quality of coaching. So right now who knows... but you could possibly see a huge improvement from them with a new dc, db coach, and conditioning coach.

Is anyone sure D Hall will be ready to play to start the season or will he be on the PUP list to start the season??

And DB is arguably the hardest position to come out as a rookie and succeed at because it is so based on what the other players do (qb and receiver) it requires a lot of instinct and physical ability.

Cornerback: Bashaud Breeland, Washington Redskins
Draft position: Round 4, No. 102

Fourteen passes defensed is an excellent total for a rookie; that figure shows Breeland has pretty good skills. He also shined when matched up against Dez Bryant in Dallas back in Week 8, helping to hold the dynamic receiver to three catches for 30 yards. Breeland is a very fluid athlete who plays with a sense of urgency and is aggressive supporting the run.

Thanks! I remember Breeland was in the straight up "BAD" rankings on that "how close was your team to the Super Bowl" thing that ESPN did recently.

I like him though and like his confidence.

I think we have three good corners.
I blame everything on Haslett that happened to our defense. No reason why we couldnt have had at least a competitive defense.

Breeland and Amerson are both talented players and need to be coached up. There really should be no doubt in who will be starting. Our question marks are at both saftey positions and the defensive line.

Our linebackers and corners are solid. I would even go as far as to saying we have a very good linebacker group. If we keep Rak then it will be an outstanding group.

Defensive line mainly nose tackle and saftey are needed.

I agree about our cornerbacks. I find Rak to be quite underwhelming - nothing special there. Kerrigan is terrific. Robinson is very good. Riley is a liability.

My 2 cents

I don't buy it, but I'll be happy if you're right.

If all we need to do to go from being the 30th best defense to the 20th is change the coordinator, then things are already looking up in Washington.

I also think that Haslett was only a part of the problem here - no DC was making things work here with the secondary & injuries we had PLUS the players that we had, even without the injuries, were not a great group and did not execute
the defensive failures were not only due to Haslett or the 3-4 - this was due to zero accountability and no real leadership at the top

I look for things to get better here but it will take more than just getting rid of Haslett
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
