riggofan wrote:Btw nobody has mentioned QB really in "who gets added in FA". We're obviously going to bring in at least one quarterback in free agency.
Do you think there is any possibility they look at someone else to actually compete with Griffin/Cousins? Ryan Mallett maybe?
I think it depends on their mindset, if you are content on keeping RG and Cousins both this season than I think you bring in or draft/sign a young guy. If your thinking is one of them will be gone then I think you go the veteran route with a Hoyer, Mallett , McKown, or …
That's exactly what I was thinking, man. I don't personally think Griffin is going anywhere this year, but its not clear to me how they view Cousins at this point.

I think so too, SJ. My question though is really do you think the team can be significantly better on the field this year? I hate to even type this, but significantly better to me would be 7-9. lol.
I hope that's the case, but the defense in particular needs so much help. I'm not sure I can believe it yet.

we all agree that there's a lot to do - the W/L this season is not as important as seeing better production on the field ...
we were terrible on BOTH offense and defense on 3rd downs last season and we constantly allowed other teams to stay on the field and worse, to score a bunch of points - you're right it would seem that the defense needs the most attention but the O line play also needs help and that is going to take a couple of years - I really believe we are going to be better and might get up to 7 wins but the most important thing is to visually see the evidence on the field in how they play and how they handle adversity
we did not look at all good in many games last season and the attitude IMO really sucked
I really think that Scott is going to not be near as aggressive as some are hoping and that he wants to get a feel for both what Jay wants and needs and what the staff he's got here are able to do
I think Jay realizes the importance of this franchise showing improvement ... everyone is going to be very motivated
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Yeah I think they can be too. The key this year is to add the right people. when I posted my suggestions I tried going for young, consistent, low cost, and little to no injury history. Some of the players I posted are FAs that are either on bad teams and are undervalued, or have another big star on the team overshadowing them and requiring the big money.
Beyond that adding the right players in FA, these new coaches doing what they are hired to do, and a little bit of hard work and the skins may actually have a shot of looking good the right way this year.
Oh and also with what is possipossiy some extra cap money left over, we coulf either take a few chances on some 1 year deals on players, or we could restructure some players to pay more forward this year so we have more cap space in future years.
So if we have 15m left over because we cut the right FA's and spend smart in FA and dont waste money. We can look at trent, desean, hatcher, and lichtensteiger, offer a restructure that pays them more this year, keeps their current term and amount of total money the same, so that 15million extra is available next year and the year after.
Kinda like we did with albert, but its a capped year, so now Mara cant nail us on it.

I could see something like this being a good strategy. Using extra cap space this year to give current players a boost in exchange for lightening the impact of their contracts down the road. Could be a very smart move.
I'm not against adding young free agents and I'd like to see a 8 or 9 win season in 2015 - that's all great ...
actually, I'm sure that many here would get all excited if we had a 'great' season like we did in 2012
I'm sure I'm in the minority when I say I'd prefer to have a much improved product in 2015 that we can build on than a 10 win season that then has 2 x 3 win seasons in 2016 and 2017
Scot needs time and I'm sure they'd like to have a miracle turnaround here but IMO that is going to take at least 2 seasons

If we did that, then with Scots strategy the players we really need or want to retain we can afford to. Right now we really dont have a lot of current players worth breaking the bank for, and we shouldnt break the bank on a FA regardless of who it is because we have no clue how anyone will perform for us.
So why not start cutting bait on the guys we know arent worth their money, bring in some young guys coming off their rookie contracts, draft good players, all of which are inexpensive. Get 20-30 million under cap and frontload trent, when we resign kerrigan and morris frontload them, and a few of these guys we have a lot invested in like desean and hatcher.

My understanding is that some unused cap can be rolled over to the next year.

I truly hope we can restructure Garcon's contract so he can stay with the team. He is a top flight WR that didn't have anyone throwing the ball to him. He is MUCH better than his stats indicate. Having a dual threat makes things much easier. Remember 2012? We were 9-1 in games he played in.
That being said, it most likely would have to be a fairly significant pay decrease. He will be 29 by the beginning of next year, so there is room for negotiation.
As far as signing FAs --- I hope the FO breaks their bad habits and they don't sign anyone over 30 years old.....

I agree 100%, man. I know DJax is the big home run hitter and stole a lot of the thunder this year. But Garcon is just rock solid, reliable and I trust him to stay healthy more than Jackson.

I agree too i think he is an asset, around 4 million or so would be well worth it. If he wont restructure though cutting ties makes the most sense financially.

He's a free agent unless we franchise tag him. Doesn't have to be cut.

I realize we're likely to take a more low key approach to FA with McGloughan, but we're going to have to fill some holes in free agency this year out of necessity.
I still like a safety in free agency. Rahim Moore is the big one on my list, but Marcus Gilchrist from the Chargers might be an interesting one. Good chance Barry will have an opinion on him one way or the other.

Ah thanks! No one came up when I searched Redskins. Forgot PFT won't use the name. lol. I was really surprised Rak wasn't in the top 100!
I'll be curious to see what happens with him next month. I don't really see how any team can offer him much of a contract.

Not totally surprising, but apparently Merriweather isn't coming back.
Dianna Russini of NBC Washington is reporting that Redskins sources have informed her that they do not plan on bringing strong safety Brandon Meriweather back next season.
I hope these guys have a plan for safety this season!

How surprised would you be to see Rak back in DC next year? I wouldn't have a problem with bringing him back at a reasonable price. Just hard to see that happening on either side.
ESPN’s John Keim reports that the Redskins met with free agent OLB Brian Orakpo‘s agent at the Scouting Combine last week.
According to Keim, Washington expressed interest in re-signing Orakpo during their meeting. Although, Keim adds there’s still a “long way to go” in regards to Orakpo being back in Washington next season, and he isn’t sure how much interest the Redskins really have in re-signing him at this point in time. Sources have told Keim that they do not expect Orakpo back in Washington.
At the very least, this is a positive sign that Washington may be willing to consider bringing him back if they can get him at a reasonable price.
The idea of Orakpo departing in free agency has been talked about for several months now, and dating back to October of last year when was placed on injured reserve with a torn right pectoral.
Orakpo, 28, played out the 2014 season under the team’s franchise tag and is once again in line to be an unrestricted free agent. Last year, he made a salary of $11.455 million.

Only for a good price and because im curious to see with a new strength coach hoping the injuries wont be a problem and with a new DC to see if he can develop a technique other than bull rushing..
Id say for us something like a 2 year, 10 million with 4 of it guaranteed would be ok. Rak probably thinks he can get more than that and he is likely right.... but any more than that and id rather use a draft pick
