If and If and ...........If Jay likes Mariota and confirms with Scot and they both agree, YES brace yourselves.
WOW - that would be incredible ... we don't have an O line ... but then again, I doubt they'd rush him in there either
we do need a QB ....
I just would find it hard to believe that IF Mariota does fall to us that we'd take him when we could get so much for him
and, I just don't see a QB of this caliber falling to the 5 spot - stranger things have happened - that's for sure
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I agree. That's such a crazy idea especially with the o-line woes and the defensive mess.
Its not every year that your team has a top five pick though, so I suppose there is a case to be made if SM and Gruden were just completely blown away by Mariota (or Winston). The way I see it, at some point you have to land a starting caliber QB. You could wait a year or two to do it, and find your 8-8 team is picking at #15 and doesn't have a shot at that QB. And you end up trading two first rounders to move up...
This comment from walterfootball.com would scare me off:
WalterFootball.com knows some general managers who are skeptical of Mariota as a passer and his developing into a passer who can function out of the pocket.

Can't see Mariota... Scot knows that we need too much other stuff... and, despite the gushing, I doubt that he has him that high... Quarterbacks tend to be significantly over-valued in the draft, and I see Scot as way to serious to fall for that right now... he will be applying what he believes to be the ACTUAL value of players, in terms of their talent.

Interesting comments about the lack of o-line "big guys" available in the draft and why. Does this make these Brandon Scherff type players more valuable?
Stop me if you’ve heard this before—Scot McCloughan likes big offensive linemen. Big guys beat little guys in football, especially in the late going when the power running game becomes important. But big offensive linemen are getting harder to come by.
McCloughan saw the issue coming a while ago and talked about it at the 2010 NFL Combine. “The one thing about the offensive line nowadays is the game’s changed a lot in college with the spread offense,” he said. “The big power guys, the guys that come off (the line) and drive block and all that – you don’t see that any more in college. You see more finesse, more pass protection.”
A look at the NFL draft prospects along the offensive line this year bears this out. The CBS Sports NFL draft site lists 70 offensive tackles as possible draft prospects. Only 17 of the tackles are listed at 320 pounds or more. Of that group, three are evaluated as first-or second-round picks—Brandon Scherff of Iowa (320 lb.), Ereck Flowers of Miami of Florida (324), and Jeremiah Poutasi of Utah (321). Eight of them are rated as eight late third-day picks or free agent pickups.
The quantity of guards weighing 320 or more is higher compared to the tackles but the quality isn’t quite as good. CBS lists 55 guards as prospects and 23 of them are 320 or heavier. In that group, Laken Thompson of Duke (323) and Tré Jackson of Florida State (323) are rated as second-rounders and Jackson’s teammate Josue Matias (325) has a third-round grade. Of the rest, 18 are seventh round or free agent types.
What’s possibly worse for a GM in search of big linemen is that the weights given before the NFL Combine are usually their weights as listed by their college sports information departments. Those can tend to be exaggerated somewhat. We will get the true weights next month in Indianapolis and they number of players who really are over 320 could drop.

I get kind of obsessed with fanspeaks mock draft tool. Kind of an interesting way to see how players might be rated. http://fanspeak.com/ontheclock/
Drafting mostly BPA today, I was pretty happy with these results:
5: R1P5 DT LEONARD WILLIAMS USC
38: R2P6 OT T.J. CLEMMINGS PITTSBURGH
69: R3P5 G TRE' JACKSON FLORIDA STATE
102: R4P6 TE NICK O'LEARY FLORIDA STATE
133: R5P5 CB LADARIUS GUNTER MIAMI
166: R6P6 DE COREY CRAWFORD CLEMSON
197: R7P5 S ANTHONY JEFFERSON UCLA
That Tre' Jackson kid looks like a beast. Anybody know much about him?

what an improvement it will be if we can find a way to have 8 or 9 new starters from the next 2 drafts - when you combine that with the free agents, things will look better here in 2017, given the time it takes to get an O line playing well together and the fact that we need time to either add a QB or find a way to get the ones we have now, playing better
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
Here's a question for you guys since there isn't much going on. I've noticed going through the 7 round mock drafts that when you get into the third and fourth rounds, some of the best available players seem to be running backs. Teams aren't picking that position in the early rounds as much these days.
Do you think its possible we could draft a running back in one of those middle rounds? i.e. Say a highly rated guy like TJ Yeldon is available in the third or fourth.

Unless it is a running back whom is viewed as a dominant game breaker, I don't think so. As with quarterbacks, running backs are dependent on the line in front of them. Until ours has changed, our RB situation is about as good as it can be.

Kiper's newest mock draft has us taking Randy Gregory. His comments about Mariota are interesting though:
Analysis: Gregory -- a freak athlete who brings scheme versatility, the ability to disrupt in the passing game and hold up a lot better than many realize against the run -- would be a fit for any team drafting in the top five, because you just can't beat the upside as a disruptive force on defense. I also like Shane Ray here if he drops, and this is a spot where teams looking at Marcus Mariota could move, but if they stay put and don't have interest in Mariota, Gregory makes a lot of sense.
The top of his draft was: Tampa - Winston Titans - Leonard Williams Jax - Shane Ray Raiders - Amari Cooper

If this happens we're golden at being able to trade out of the 5 spot ... I predict the Jets, Browns & Eagles will be V interested ...
and ... if we can't, we'll get a great player for years to come
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
According to this, Randy Gregory could be another BUST like Dion Jordon
Things that make you go......................hmmmm?
"He's a hell of an athlete. He just doesn't make plays. He's similar to Dion Jordan from a couple of years ago," the scout said. "... He does flash. You'll see him make a play and go 'wow' and then he won't do anything else the rest of the game. To me he's still a work in progress."
This site has the Skins taking Marcus from Oregon.
5 Washington Marcus Mariota Oregon QB Reach/Value: +3 Height: 6'4" Weight: 211 Alternate Pick #1 Brandon Scherff Alternate Pick #2 Vic Beasley The only question here is which story will land on the front page of the Washingon Post on Friday, April 31? A photo of Marcus Mariota proudly holding up a Redskins jersey with Roger Goodell? Or will it be a black-and-white photo of RGIII, the savior of the franchise just two seasons ago, walking away into obscurity? Mariota played in a system similar to RGIII, a spread system with limited reads and without the need for pocket presence. If you believe pocket presence is learned, you could argue that Mariota has an entirely different, and more humble, leadership style than the one that doomed RGIII and will therefore be willing to do anything and everything in order to learn how to play from the pocket. If you agree with Mike Mayock and believe pocket presence is innate, well, this staff better hope Mr. Mariota possesses it.
I just can't believe that pick at all. You might convince me that they would draft Winston if he was available but I can't see them drafting a guy with basically the same question marks as RGIII.

c'mon man - there are some here that just don't have a clue - we're not listening to anyone that thinks we're taking a QB ...
that's almost as stupid as the deal we made for RG3 - those guys are not in charge here anymore .... are they?
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
It's really simple - I want the Washington Redskins to be competitive again
We get a QB like RG3 and I'm excited for the future - we now see what we've got with RG3 and I'm hopeful but I'm not stupid
this kid has a lot of talent but he's not looking like he's going to be as good as he can be - he can change but I doubt it ...
time to move on but it's certainly not time to bring in a QB
we need to re-make this franchise and we need to make huge changes in how we do things, especially at the top
it's going to take a couple of years but I'd be surprised if we add a QB with a high draft pick in the next 2 drafts
we may add 1 or 2 QBs in the next 2 drafts but not with a top 50 pick
why would you bring in a future franchise type QB when you're at least 3 seasons from having an O line - not happening in this draft
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
HEROHAMO wrote:I see no way that the Bucs and Titans pass on either Marriota or Winston.
This year will be like drafts in the past. QBs go no.1 and no.2. Both Marriota and Winston are very good prospects.
Strongly disagree. I think its very likely the Titans could pass on Mariota. Kiper has the Titans taking Leonard Williams. McShay has them taking Leonard Williams. NFL.com has them taking Dante Fowler. Not a single mock drafter on NFL.com has them taking Mariota: http://www.nfl.com/draft/2015/mock-drafts
Maybe teams will come around on Mariota after the combine, but right now he's not a lock to the Titans at all. They just got burned drafting Jake Locker in the first round and have a bunch of holes to fix. A lot like our situation.

hah. Well, I'm not saying we 100% wouldn't take a QB in the draft. If a clear cut BPA QB was available at #5, then sure. It would best stupid to pass up the most important position on the field. I just don't think Mariota is that guy.

Agree. Mariota will not be BPA at 5...10... or 15.

OK - which QB do you think might be the BPA for the Redskins at the 5 spot in this draft?

Not sure what you're arguing about exactly. I agree with you. This is by all accounts a weak draft class for QBs, and neither Winston or Mariota are sure things.
My point is I don't think we'll take a QB at #5 because neither of those guys is BPA - not because we would be stupid to draft a QB.
