Curse of the Safeties....

Post by fredp45 »

How many teams can claim they've had more bad luck with one position than us with the Safety position...

1) Mark Carrier -- signed in 2000. He was so far done it was ridiculous! Played just one year. Payed a ton for his short time!

2) Sean Taylor -- drafted in 2004 with 5th pick. Stud player, nothing needs to be said here. Played 3 years, shot in his own home and died during his 4th year.

3) Adam Archaletta -- signed in 2006...Highest paid safety at the time. Again, played one year, started just 7 games! Paid a ton of money. AA didn't like the way Gibbs coached. haha Traded for a 6th rounder after one year.

4) LaRon Landry -- drafted in 2007 with 6th pick. Played for 5 years. Unbelievable athlete and body builder. Skins played him as free safety and he played poorly..A strong safety. Left in 2012 as free agent. Never as good as predicted.

5) Tanard Jackson -- I hooked my wagon and hopes to this guy so many times when he was finally suspended for the 4th time, I cut bait...a super talent who couldn't stay clean..(could he return in 15? STOP ME!!!)

6) Rambo -- UGH

7) Brandon Meriweather -- Keep yo head up BM!!! Suspended and fined for illegal hits.

8) Jordan Bernstein -- 7th rounder in 2012. Has serious knee injury in first preseason kickoff...

9) Reed Doughty -- 6th round pick in 2006. Good Special Teams guy, we started him.

10) Duke Ihenacho -- signed this year, hurt in first game he played.

11) Sure I missed one

Don't forget Ryan Clark. (younger version)

There's also some serious doubt about Phillip Thomas, who was drafted 2 rounds ahead of Rambo.

Chris "The Predator" Horton flashed, and then disappeared.

It's been tough.

Watch the best tackle ever made by a safety... 1:10 in... Ken Houston was simply awesome.
Oh, to have a player like this again...
While you're there, take a second to admire #41, CB Mike Bass' AWESOME hit on Calvin Hill.

Houston's tackle on Walt Garrison has to be one of the three greatest NFL tackles...and I can't think of the other two. Mike Bass hits Calvin Hill so hard that Hill's helmet flies off, but there are hard hits every year. Houston is behind Garrison: he makes the tackle with skill and strength, and smarts.

As it's the Pro Bowl, I've just spent a few minutes rewatching Sean's hit on Brian Moorman. Epic!

While I started this thread I am NOT lobbying for Collins as our first pick...even if he's best available! If he is BPA at #5, Trade back and take BPA at another spot!

I'm pretty sure the safety curse started with the sheriff, Stanley Richard.

I have a theory that it began with Raphel Cherry...

It's not bad luck. It's awful personnel decisions.

=D> and it's not just 1 position - we have made too many bad personnel decisions each & every season ....

hopefully Snyder will leave these guys alone for a couple of years and see what happens
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)
