I think we should draft Landon Collins.

While I believe our first priority is to fix our Oline and Dline. We already have a pro Bowl left tackle and I dont believe in drafting a right tackle or guard in the first round especially in the top five picks.

Top ten picks should go to true game changers and future hall of famers or potential hall of famers.

Williams out of USC would be my first choice but most likely gone by the time we pick. So it makes sense for us to add a big playmaker in our weak secondary. Shane Ray looks like a force too but we have good linebackers already. So to me it makes sense to get Collins.

The free agent market is also loaded with quality guards and some defense nose tackle options as well. So its looking more and more like we probably will take Collins with the no. 5 pick.

hmmm, I don't think Collins will be TBA at #5 (though I like his play)
I think we pull the trigger on an Olineman or DE/LB

If we pick at #5, I just want a BEAST. If that is Scherff at tackle or Collins or Randy Gregory, I want that guy who is going to be a difference maker.

I hate this comment btw: "Shane Ray looks like a force too but we have good linebackers already." It strikes as exactly the wrong approach (no offense intended). If Shane Ray is the best guy at that pick, then TAKE HIM.

I know we were discussing the need/BPA thing last week. Thought Rich Tandler described it better than I could:

But just because it’s a big need that doesn’t mean that you necessarily address it first or put most of your resources into it this year (that’s how I’m interpreting “mainly focus”) if you are building through the draft. You don’t have any control over who is on the board when your pick comes up. If you’re “focusing” on the line, you’re going to reach and not take the best graded player available.

And that’s what Scot McCloughan is going to do. It should be noted that need does factor into the grades so there will be something of a bias towards players in positions of need. But if there are a lot of highly graded secondary players on the board when the Redskins draft, McCloughan could well go in that direction.

The object in rebuilding through the draft is not to build up one area and then move on to other areas. The idea is to get the best players you can, no matter where they play.

In the short term you might end up with some units that are too thin and some others that have great depth. But if you stick with the process as teams like McCloughan’s past employers, the Packers, Seahawks, and 49ers have you can end up with a pretty good team. If you reach in the draft in the hope of shoring up one particular area of the team you will end up not fixing anything at all.

I think that's where some fans get confused. Its not just "best player available". Its "best GRADED player available".

I see people writing posts that try to attribute THEIR notion of need/BPA to our new GM. Here is what HE SAID in his presser:

McCLOUGHAN: “Well, first and foremost, like I said for the next two weeks I will be at all-star games and then getting back here and getting to know this roster – going through the whole ’14 season, meeting with the coaches as much as possible and just seeing what we think have and don’t have. Now, when we approach this draft, you know right now we have the fifth pick. Again, I’m never under the assumption that you draft for need. You draft the best available football player on the board."

As for why ...

McCLOUGHAN: "You know people say, ‘Well, if you have this and this, why would you do that?’ Because, you know, in the long run, they are the ones who will help you win the most games.”

Earlier he hinted that FA is where one could/should address need. I think FA is post-draft.

McCLOUGHAN: “I honestly think the draft is the lifeline of your organization, but also you’ve got to understand with free agency that’s a tool that you can use and you can use it in a positive manner. You know, you start dabbling too much in free agency sometimes, you’re getting older guys; you’re getting medical history. The thing I liked about what we did in San Fran, what we did in Seattle, we drafted our own, molded our own and re-signed the ones we wanted to re-sign. So all of a sudden now, you train them how you want to train them. See, in Washington, we’re going to draft these guys and we are going to draft them and mold them as Redskins. We’re not going to have to go out to other organizations and bring in 32 and 33 year olds who have different plans. I think the best case scenario is you draft and mold your own and re-sign your own. But free agency is still there to be used to make your roster stronger too. You can’t lose sight of that.”

I remember it being the other way and then switching (I think) the year we got hit with the cap penalty. Thought it went back.

I definitely remember people griping about having FA being first being kinda backwards ... or was it the other way around?

I dont think he is the best player available at 5 either. But its not like it would be a total reach if we drafted him there.

Best case scenerio would be if we trade back to like 15 and receive another late first round pick. But well see.

I think what you're remembering is that they moved the draft back last year. FA has always started before the draft, but then there is a second round after June 1st, when teams can cut players to save on cap space..

Our odds of getting a lot for trading down is good if he is on the board at 5. The Jets have not commited to their QB per their new gm... so with the likelyhood of him going to the jets at 6, the jags and raiders having 0 interest.... we could provoke a bidding war with philly and anyone picking after us needing a QB. This is a great situation for us if Tennessee passes on him. Looks like 3 teams may be looking for a qb in round 1 after the jets.

Yeah you answered exactly what I was asking. I'd love to trade out of #5 to get more picks, but I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk possibly handing Philly their new franchise QB.

Depends onhow he grades I guess. I would hope he factors in what plugging a rookie qb into a bad team can do to a player. An early round qb pick is too risky for us even for the best qb. Picking up a Russell Wilson type value in the mid rounds would be ok.
