Re: Scot McCloughan named new GM
So far it looks like they are doing what a normal smart organization would do.
Bring in a GM with a proven and recent track record for results and success.
Hopefully hiring Wade Phillips, a defensive coach that will back up our first time head coach, and has a recent proven record of creating top defenses in the league.
Now if we can fill the front office, and defensive position coaches with similar people.... then those right people draft smart and get good FA's... the end result MAY be enough successful people in the organization and locker room to take a culture used to losing and that honestly expects it and make it one that expects to win.
Sounds crazy I know, but we expect to lose and things fall apart because we have more losers in the organization than winners... no faith... you tip the scales to people thst are used to winning, then the losers begin to buy in, and believe it too.

I want Scot to review the scouting department and FIRE those bums who aren't cutting it. I think our whole scouting department suck arse. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Scot McCloughan named new GM
There will not be a magical turn-around. It is easier to tear an organization apart -- something Snyder did when he fired Casserly, Norv Turner, Bobby Mitchell (in effect) and many others on the Redskins staff. It will take many small steps, but this looks like a good one. (In my imagination, Joe Gibbs watched the last game and told Snyder, "You need someone like Bobby Beathard to run the football operation".)

There was an excellent article about him in ESPN The Magazine's last issue. I encourage everyone to read it.
He looks to be a very, very good pick up.

Raiders, Jets also talking to McCloughan

At a time when multiple reports continue to indicate that it’s a done deal former 49ers G.M. Scot McCloughan will become the G.M. in Washington, PFT continues to hear that the deal isn’t done.
One of the reasons for the delayed consummation is that multiple other teams continue to pursue him. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the Raiders and Jets continue to have interest in McCloughan.
Moreover, the negotiations with Washington (which are ongoing) entail multiple issues. One of those issues likely has become whether McCloughan will have control over the roster and the draft. Currently, team president and G.M. Bruce Allen has those powers. If McCloughan gets those powers in D.C., it will amount to a de facto demotion for Allen.
As noted earlier in the day, Allen would emerge with enhanced job security, since he’d slide into a role that doesn’t carry with it accountability for the success or failure of the football team. If Allen keeps the power, he’ll likewise retain the responsibility, and McCloughan will simply be joining the team as Allen’s No. 2.
McCloughan most recently worked in the Seattle front office, assisting G.M. John Schneider with the stocking of one of the best rosters in football.

Re: Scot McCloughan named new GM
If this deal doesn't go through because Bruce wants final say, I'm out. Truly out. How dumb would Snyder be to allow this fool to continue being in charge of player personel. What a PR disaster this could turn out to be. Snyder actually had people excited about bringing a guy like this in and to miss on him because a terrible talent evaluator wants to remain in control of talent evaluation would be (and I've said this a lot during the past 15 years) one of Snyders biggest mistakes.

Bruce Allen would retain the title of team president, which he received last offseason following the firing of Mike Shanahan, and McCloughan would work under him.

So is it official or not?
Re: Scot McCloughan named new GM
From numerous articles I have read, they say part of the deal would be Scot as GM and having full control over personnel. If it comes down to money.... well we can let Danny do the 1 thing he is really good at there...

Bruce Allen is now in a job better suited to his capabilities, negotiating contracts, defending the team name, and handling other such duties as team president. + 1 - I'm concerned as well - this could be a huge step in the right direction - Scot M is right to ensure he gets the 'power' he needs
hopefully someone figures this out - it's certainly a huge step and the effect it could have on morale and attitude is immeasurable IMO
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

Really? His past two rosters utilize mobile qbs, and there isnt a ton of other options out there for us is there? Vic, buttfumblee, or Rex Cutler.. eeeew..
So, I dont see why anyone would come to this conclusion- sorry to single you out im just saying in general.
I agree. I don't know if the new GM prefers mobile QBs or not, but I don't believe Griffin is going anywhere immediately. RGIII's rookie contract is still very affordable. Unless there are SERIOUS problems between him and Gruden, what do we have to lose by allowing him to compete for the starting job or be the backup?
Personally I'd take Cutler over any of the QBs on our roster currently, but I wouldn't trade anything for him or offer any kind of outlandish contract.

Uh oh.
Like I said yesterday --- He does things on paper, not in reality.
It appears that McCloughan sees the writing on the wall and will be forcing Danny boy's hand. After all, McCloughan has options -- a lot of them. It appears yet again that Danny wanted to put himself in a position where McCloughan was reporting to one of his puppets --- a puppet that WILL do whatever Danny boy says without being the one held accountable.
I am actually VERY happy this is happening NOW and not after the hire like it did with Shanahan. If the deal goes thru, it actually gives me a small speck of hope that Danny will be forced into being a hands off owner. But...... we'll see how this pans out. Danny boy is an egotisitical little bitch, so I'm confident he will screw this up someway or another..... it just depends on how desperate he is to win his fanbase back.
I guess we can "hope" it works out........ although I have learned in my life that hope is only as good as the determination and sacrifice that goes into it.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

Key quote. If it's true that McCloughan takes the job, then I think chances are that he really will have 100% control, at least per his contract. Otherwise why would he sign here? He's got attractive offers from multiple teams who will give him what he wants. If he signs in DC, it's a sign that Allen (and, by proxy, Dan Snyder) is stepping aside.
I'll take a wait-and-see approach myself, and I don't blame anyone who remains skeptical.

I agree 100%. There's a pretty clear track record with Snyder now, and the quality guys coming in are smart to get the right deal before things can go south. Its exactly why Gruden held out to get that fifth year in his contract.
I also like that Snyder is kind of backed into a corner on this right now. The news about McCloughan is out there, and it would look REALLY BAD not to get the deal done now. How would Snyder possibly explain that to this fan base? Couldn't get the deal done because I refused to relinquish control? Wouldn't give the GM final say? Couldn't keep Bruce Allen out of player decisions?

Like I sort of said yesterday, I completely understand why so many are skeptical of any and everything coming out of Redskins Park. I simply choose not to believe the absolutely 100% negative version of everything I read about this team particularly from certain sources (the Wash Post, PFT, etc.) as they've proven to be true slaves to the 24 hour news cycle disease, posting whatever they know will get the most hits (regardless of its veracity). Over time, I've found Tandler and Keim to be far more measured in their approach (and willing to admit when they get something wrong, rather than hiding behind their source that said Dan Snyder drinks baby blood, who turns out to be the janitor that got fired yesterday).
I too want to take a wait and see approach, but we collectively have a tendency around here to go nuclear at the first hint, smell of Dan's meddling and read into that he's messing up yet again without actually waiting to see what happens and literally blaming him for any and everything that goes wrong around here, seemingly completely absolving others of their Shanahan-igans. That's not excusing his past behavior, but especially in this case it is saying that if it (i.e. hiring a real GM) looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and smells like a duck, we shouldn't be running to call it a jackass because Dan Snyder is a jackass and this is the Redskins. I guess.

This is exactly what I mean. Are we now taking the position that Shanahan did NOT have total control somehow? I remember his contract and the articles about it when he signed it being over the top clear about who was in charge. Are we now forgetting his carefully leaked stories at the end of his tenure here angling to get fired so he could still collect his paycheck? Wasn't Dan Snyder just as blindsided by the news that all of a sudden Mike was unhappy and wanted out as we were? I certainly may have missed the article or posting explaining how Dan managed to usurp Mike's contract giving him total control and getting involved in player personnel decisions. While I've read comments on here suggesting that it was Dan/Allen who "forced" Mike to get RGIII, the contract in place at the time simply doesn't support that conclusion (unless there is some verifiable proof other than "Well it's Dan Snyder, so it's his fault").
My only point is a mountain of f-ups can be laid at Snyder's feet. And if you take the position that it is his team so it all should be laid there, fine, with that I won't argue. BUT, to act like (for example) MIke Shanahan was usurped or minimized or is the innocent victim in that fiasco is mind boggling. At a certain point, it becomes lazy and easy to simply blame Dan Snyder for EVERY DAMN THING that goes wrong.
IF he's really hiring a GM, that by itself should be applauded (especially taking into account how crappy he's been the last 20 years). At the same time, if at some point in the future (like more than 2-3 years from now), it turns out to not work out, we shouldn't retroactively blame it on Snyder for not relinquishing "total control"

Mike told Dan that the Redskins needed a GM no matter who was the HC - Dan hired Bruce Allen and later when Mike was brought in, we all were led to believe that Mike & Bruce were in charge here ...
Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder forced Mike to make the trade to get RG3 ...
as things happened over the next 2 years, obviously, Dan Snyder was more involved than we were led to believe ...
hopefully, Bruce Allen's gaffe will prove to be the catalyst for Dan to finally let a real GM take over here ..
we do NOT need a GM that will be working for Bruce Allen (& Dan Snyder)
It's not ALL Dan Snyder's fault - he just needs to let the franchise be managed like other NFL owners do

My honest answer is I don’t have a clue what goes on at Redskins Park…”total control” seems to be a relative term in Ashburn…

all Dan Snyder needs to do is to let the GM and FO run the franchise just like the other owners do - he can be involved without interfering just like the other owners do
Dan needs to simply move Bruce Allen out of his job as GM and put in a GM
If that GM does not do his job, then he will need to be replaced by Snyder
Dan doesn't have to give 'total control' to the GM but he has to give him the authority to do his job and that means the new GM will not be working under Bruce Allen because we all know that Bruce Allen does what Dan wants
