This is VERY encouraging. I'm wondering if this was more of a Snyder push or an Allen one.

They've just been getting HAMMERED by the media this past week or so - especially after Allen's train wreck press conference. Its really hard to know if they're making the change because its the right thing to do or because they need to make the PR move to calm things down.

Probably more so a PR move, but I'll take it.

Wow didn't think he would be able to do it this year...But Snyder has fired up the fan base yet again!! I'll resevre my judgement...

Jesus, we've got battered fan syndrome.
Either way, PR move or "we want to win football games" move, doesn't matter, the move was made. It's the move, almost to a poster on this site, we've all been either yelling for, asking for, lamenting the lack of or quietly wishing for. Now we have it. How about a smile? No need to congratulate Snyder or anything for doing his job (finally) and hiring someone to do this job
McCloughan told ESPN 980's Kevin Sheehan that he met with Redskins owner Dan Snyder for six hours Tuesday and that a deal is close. The move would give McCloughan control over player personnel and would leave Bruce Allen as team president rather than serving two roles.
but a GM is a pretty damn big step in the direction of running a football team.
As to his drinking:
"I had a drinking problem," he told Wickersham. "I'm a good person. And I know how to run a team."
Guy sounds like he also might have something to prove. For that reason (and his age) I like him better than AJ Smith, leaving completely aside either man's GM/personnel record.

Re: Scot McCloughan named new GM
Danny boy does what the fans tell him to on the surface. This happened with Fassel, Haslett, Vinny, Gibbs, etc. He has no spine. He understands that he's losing fans and needs to do something...... so he's hired McCloughan. Historically, once Danny boy has hired/fired the personnel making the fans happy, he just continues meddling behind the scenes..... all while issuing press releases saying how the coaches/GM/etc. have full control.
Now, what I hope happens this time around, is that Danny boy will sit down, shut up, and keep his bitchy little face out of McCloughan's way.
So I apologize in advance that I don't think this will immediately make the skins a contender. Danny boy has not earned my benefit of the doubt..... It will take a couple years before a real opinion can be formed.

He's got a long way to go before that's true, I think. Let's wait and see how free agency, the draft, training camp go. If the preseason team looks like it's making strides, then I doubt we'll see a half-empty stadium or tickets going for $3. But even then with an 0-5 start we'll be right back where we were in the pits of this past season.

Not complaining, man. Honestly I'm kind of shocked that this happened at all, and I'm definitely smiling about it.
My only "concern" if you want to call it that is just that I thought Snyder was out of the picture for good when Shanahan/Allen came in. Finding out that wasn't the case, its hard to see moves like this and not wonder if its real or not. Your comment about "battered wives syndrome" is probably on target! lol.

This isn't quite right. Fans were sick of Vinny years before Danny finally cut ties. Fans have wanted a GM since before Vinny was gone — so much so that Snyder nominally gave Vinny that role, though that wasn't what fans were asking for. Fans were also tired of FA splash signings and trading picks for those players years before Danny stopped doing it.
I'd say that he has learned about some things given enough time (i.e., lots and lots of time), but that doesn't strike me as being the same thing as doing "what the fans tell him to on the surface."
Now, what I hope happens this time around, is that Danny boy will sit down, shut up, and keep his bitchy little face out of McCloughan's way.
That, of course, is the issue. And we the fans all seem to be in agreement about what should happen next. We can only wait and see . . .

I'm hopeful too - and also hoping that Dan Snyder stops his interfering
If this guy is really in charge, he needs to be the one that hires the DC with help from Jay Gruden, not Allen/Snyder
but if they've already made up their minds about the DC, that's OK as long as all the coaching and player decisions from now on are not made with any influence from Dan Snyder
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

McCloughan will have full power over the #Redskins personnel department, per source. That includes adding/subtracting the actual evaluators.

Ok, not sure what you mean in the italized sentence only because giving someone time to learn doesn't have much to do with being a fan whore. I very well may just be completely misunderstanding, but clarification would be greatly appreciated (if my assumptions were wrong).
That being said, I recall the fans wanted a GM ---- so Danny "promoted" Vinny. That gave him a year or so; people didn't like it, but were willing to see how it went. Vinny sucked. Then the real "push" for firing Vinny came in 2009. People didn't like him before then, but they weren't making songs about it on the radio and people saying they were going to boycott games and such. 2009 was the year people actually became angry and the masses wanted him gone --- not just the more intelligent/football savy fans...... and when that happened --- Vinny was fired by a reactive Danny boy. Personally, I was sick of Vinny 4 seconds after he was hired. I had no clue why the idiot would hire someone that was so vastly unsuccessful in the NFL --- but now I understand it's because Danny boy is a fool (although I knew that at the time).
As far as the FA signings, I think Haynesworth was the straw. Before that the fans were totally into big time FA signings --- even after the Jason Taylor debacle. Remember --- people went crazy when we signed Haynesworth. That was around the same time in 2009. And honestly, I think that Danny boy would continue signing big time FAs if he had the cap space. After all, he did sign Desean after signing Roberts....
I personally think Danny hasn't learned a thing. He is just trying to do anything he can to stablize a volatile fan base. I WANT to believe he's learned from his 2 decades of failure --- but I don't actually believe it. When the fans get up in arms and anger reaches a boiling point, Danny does what the fans want --- whether it's firing, hiring, etc. --- in an effort to stabilize the fanbase (as he has done here). Then, 2 seconds later and behind closed doors, keeps on doing what he has been doing. Again, we literally have 2 decades of evidenitary proof. Again, I hope he has learned to keep his whiny little face out of things, but we'll see.
RIP Sean Taylor. You will be missed.

A MAMMOTH UPGRADE:
Redskins hire Scot McCloughan as new GM
Redskins hired ex-49ers and Seahawks executive Scot McCloughan as general manager and signed him to a four-year contract.
It's an absolute coup for the Redskins, who have rarely -- if ever -- employed talented personnel selectors under owner Dan Snyder. A Ron Wolf disciple with an analytics background, McCloughan is one of the very best talent evaluators in football. He largely built the 49ers roster that is now disintegrating under Trent Baalke, and played a huge role in building the current Seahawks dynasty. Under the Redskins' new arrangement, current GM Bruce Allen will be promoted to team president. Unlike the situation in Philadelphia, we wouldn't consider this a demotion for Allen. He's reportedly friends with McCloughan, and likely relishing the prospect of stepping away from building the Redskins' 53-man roster, a job he was terrible at. McCloughan is a mammoth upgrade.

Maybe there's a glimmer of hope for the 2015 Draft. I hope we find a 3rd round QB gem like Russell Wilson in 2015.
And it's fantastic that Bruce Allen can return to his duties as Director of Pants and Picnics full time now.

The bit about being an alcoholic doesn't bother me as long as he recognizes he is an alcoholic for life - so am I - and we just cannot drink. Re: Scot McCloughan named new GM
NFL Network analyst and former Seattle Seahawks fullback Michael Robinson was the first to report Tuesday that Scot McCloughan, a former executive with the 49ers and Seahawks, would be named Redskins general manager:
While my colleague Mike Jones reports that the Redskins have yet to finalize a deal with McCloughan, Robinson would have a good idea about McCloughan’s plans.
McCloughan, whose battle with alcohol abuse is detailed in a December profile in ESPN The Magazine, ran his own private scouting business last season after resigning as the Seahawks’ senior personnel executive last spring. He worked in the 49ers’ front office from 2005 to 2010 and played an integral role in San Francisco’s decision to draft Robinson, a Richmond native who played quarterback, running back and receiver at Penn State, in the fourth round of the 2006 NFL draft.
Robinson retired after helping the Seahawks win last year’s Super Bowl against the Broncos.
“So basically he’s exactly what the Redskins need?” co-host Wes McElroy said.
McCloughan, who has helped the Packers and Seahawks win Super Bowls during his 20-year NFL career, told ESPN’s Seth Wickerhsham he’s motivated to win another one. That’s presumably why he’d leave his life running a private scouting service to return to the grind of life in the NFL and to take over a project like the Redskins.

“Scottie and I, we text a lot,” Robinson said Tuesday morning during his weekly radio appearance on Richmond’s Fox Sports 910. “He’s a really good friend of mine. He’s a guy that I attribute the start of my career to because he gave me a chance. I played quarterback in college and had never played running back other than a season in college and they took a chance on me. He kept me in the league. People don’t know he was also part of getting me to Seattle. He left San Francisco, him and [Seattle GM] John Schneider were really good friends from back in Green Bay. He told John, ‘Look, we need to get this guy.’
Robinson retired after helping the Seahawks win last year’s Super Bowl against the Broncos.
“One thing about Scottie, what he understands, not only talent, OK, that’s easy,” Robinson continued Tuesday. “You talk about Patrick Willis. You talk about Frank Gore. You talk about Justin Smith and all those guys. But he understands how to build a quality locker room. He’s not just looking for your attributes on the field. He’s looking for how can I infuse you into this locker room to make this…a place where it’s conducive to winning. We would have so many conversations on the football field in San Francisco I can remember. He would always stand kind of behind everything and watch all of practice. When I would finish a play all the way through and I would talk to him and [say], ‘What are you looking for? Why do you sit back here and look all the time?’ He’d say, ‘Mike, I know all you guys can play. I’m looking to see the chemistry. I’m looking to see how you guys deal with each other.’ He’s really a bright guy. He looks at talent a whole different way, unlike I’ve seen in this business.”
“So basically he’s exactly what the Redskins need?” co-host Wes McElroy said.

“He wants to build a championship,” said Robinson, who indicated during Tuesday’s show that he talked to McCloughan on Monday. “That’s what I do know about the guy. He wants to build a culture kind of similar to what they have in Seattle. He wants to take a team and build a team. This guy needs to be a general manager somewhere. … As far as an eye for talent, there’s not another guy out there like Scottie.”
