DailyPress: Injured lineman coming back today

The Redskins' offensive line will get reinforced today when Brandon Winey returns from a sprained left ankle. Winey has yet to practice during training camp after getting injured July 28, the last day of Washington's passing camp.

"I feel bad just watching the practices go by, but it has given me some time to pay attention and learn the offense," Winey said last week. "(Today) should be the day, and I'm hoping it is because it's been a rough two weeks."

Winey, 26, was a sixth-round draft choice by Miami in 2001 who made the Redskins last year as a free agent, playing 11 games and starting three at left tackle when Chris Samuels was injured. A right tackle at LSU, a healthy Winey could have gotten a chance to replace Jon Jansen.

"You never want to see anybody get hurt, but when Jon went down, I was like, 'Dang, that was an opportunity,' " Winey said. "I still hope to get a shot."

Winey has worked on the treadmill and StairMaster to stay in condition. He estimated it would take a week of practices to get him into football shape.

"It shouldn't take long," he said. "I mean, I play offensive line - it's not like I'll be going out for the deep ball."

Defensive end Phillip Daniels is also scheduled to return. Daniels has missed all but the first day of training camp with an abdominal strain.

COOLEY MAKING IMPACT

Rookie tight end/H-back Chris Cooley had two catches for 36 yards against the Panthers. Both times, he lined up as the slot receiver. He is viewed as more of a receiver than blocker.

"I was in the right spot at the right time," he said. "The coaches gave me some calls, and I feel like I can make some plays."

Cooley, drafted in the third round from Utah State, said the NFL game has a higher tempo.

"The big thing for me is pre-snap; there are so many things you do before the play starts," he said. "It's been an amazing experience."

Cooley and veterans Mike Sellers and Brian Kozlowski are seeing the majority of playing time at tight end/H-back.

GAME LEFTOVERS

A week after leading the Redskins to two scoring drives in a 20-17 win over Denver, No. 3 quarterback Tim Hasselbeck struggled against Carolina, completing 6 of 15 passes for 65 yards with two interceptions. "You end up grading yourself on the entire performance. You just don't say, 'It was good minus those two throws,' " he said. "You're going to have good plays and bad plays; you don't want the bad plays to cost you games."

Hasselbeck's interceptions led to the game-tying and game-winning field goals in the Panthers' 23-20 overtime win.

The bizarre moment of the game came in the first quarter. A punt by Carolina's Todd Sauerbrun landed around the 5-yard line, took one bounce and hit back judge Steve Freeman. The Panthers downed the ball at the 1-yard line. Then things became complicated.

First, referee Bernie Kukar and his crew ruled that the play is dead if the ball hits an official. They moved the Redskins to the 20 because, the officials said, Freeman was standing in the end zone. Panthers coach John Fox challenged the ruling and won, since replays showed Freeman was in the field of play. The ball was placed at the 2.

The Redskins reported five injuries after the game - cornerback Rufus Brown (quad contusion), tight end Fred Baxter (sprained right knee - an MRI was performed Sunday), receiver Laveranues Coles (bruised right shin), linebacker Chris Clemons (mild hamstring strain) and offensive lineman Mark Wilson (possible broken nose). Running back/kick returner Chad Morton dressed but was held out of the game; he missed practice late in the week.
