The Redskins - looking ahead to 2015 - it's time

Post by SkinsJock »

recently I've been more pessimistic about what the future holds for our franchise - however - FFA posted this last Saturday ...

I don't think things are that bad ... Our roster has good depth and viable starters at many positions. I can't think of more than 1-2 overpaid old guys on the team, for example, and it won't hurt us to get rid of them (as I expect we will this offseason). Compare that with any year from when Snyder bought the team until Shanny's last couple of seasons — yes, even when Gibbs was here.
Yes, we lost the high picks when RGIII didn't work out, but the team has drafted at least at a league-average level of acquiring decent talent — I'm tempted to say higher than league average, but I don't know other teams' depth well enough.
It looks like Haslett needs to go. We need a few new starters in key positions on the OL, DL, and DBs, and we are also missing one or two true playmakers — guys like Jackson who can turn the tides in a game almost single-handedly.
We need a QB, obviously. That's our biggest challenge, as it is for the 15 other NFL teams that don't have a legit starter in their lineup. It's always hard being a fan when you don't have a real general calling the signals.
But, here's the thing: the distance separating solid teams from mediocre teams is not that great. People look at what we'd have to change to be the Broncos or Seahawks, but the reality is that we only need to be the Colts, Chargers, or the Chiefs to be pushing for a late-season run — all teams with obvious flaws but who are doing a good job implementing the strategy and identity they have set for themselves.
We are not far from being competitive if Gruden is the right guy and if he is given the space needed to work his plan. We do not need a total overhaul; in fact, I think that kind of approach would set this franchise back another 4-5 years. Take what Shanahan built from the ashes of Cerrato/Zorn and go from there. That's what I see Gruden doing so far, and what I'd like to see him continue to pursue.

recently, I was convinced that we would end this season and the familiar "we are not that far off ..." refrain would begin ... "we just need to add a safety and coach up some of these other guys ... " etc...

I am going to try and be a little more optimistic but it's only because there are a couple of guys here whose opinion I value
and FFA is one of them

OK - FFA's right, we are not far off and rather than think that the only way things get better here is for Snyder to stay out of things completely (that is about as possible as him selling the franchise - ain't happening) ... so, I'll go with the idea that if Snyder allows the FO and Gruden to do their thing without him interfering (too much), these guys might be able to use the draft and free agency to continue to add to the group of players we have here that look like 'keepers'

there are obvious areas of concern - we do not have an offensive line that fits Gruden's offense, we need a safety and we need to get rid of Haslett and find a DC that can find a way to get more from our defense than we've seen here the past few years

I can't believe it but I'm going to try and be a little more positive about our future if only because I refuse to give up ...

and

there's really no way that Snyder is likely to stop being the stupid owner he is - hopefully his stupidity is minimized by our FO

Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance
Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

and this from John Keim of ESPN this morning ...

Whether or not Dan Snyder makes changes in the front office and whether or not he puts someone other than Bruce Allen in charge of the football side, it won’t change the simple fact that this organization must do a better job. Goodness, how can this team accept what’s going on? Do they realize how far removed they are from being a good organization? In five of the last six years they’ve lost 12, 10, 11, 13 and now 11 games -- with two remaining.

we have to make some significant changes to how we do things here

There is no hope as long as Snyder is the owner. Double-digit loses are the norm around here so this is nothing new and I look for similar results next year. There is a pattern of losing and I really don't see it ending anytime soon. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid spiked with Snyder rum and you might get drunk, but the team isn't going to win and you will end up with just a bad hangover.

In the end the quality of the ownership management determines how successful a franchise will be and when discussing the Redskins we need to always keep in mind there are two metrics wins/losses and profit/loss. With Snyder in charge I don't know why we should expect things to improve with the wins/losses because I believe the profit/loss metric means a great deal more to him and he has actually tripled the revenues since he bought the team. He isn't worried that will leave his business also, despite the poor performance either.

If the Redskins were a restaurant it would’ve shut down long ago because we would’ve all switched to the Raven’s for better food and service, much better. Since the Redskins are a football team we stay because we are moved by a strong tribal loyalty no matter how incompetent the chief has been the last 16 years. Snyder would also like to win but maybe not enough to change.

I think the Detroit Lions are a cautionary tale for Redskin fans. As the NFL developed Detroit was one of the most successful franchises until it was taken over by William Clay Ford in the 1950’s. Mr. Ford was Henry Ford’s grandson and by all reports a very nice man who was beloved by the Detroit Lions employees. William's older brother Henry II took over the car company while thankfully for Detroit William took over the Lions. When William died recently the many heartfelt expressions of goodwill expressed by former Lion employees and associates was striking. He was loved, really loved by the many people he touched although sadly for Detroit didn’t win a thing in 60 years. But at least he screwed up the Lions and not Ford Motors, that would have been a national tragedy. Daniel Snyder is not loved but if he lives long enough Snyder might equal William Clay Ford’s record for NFL failure.

I must admit, I'm very glad that I'm not listening to sports radio in the DC area because it's obvious from some of the posts we're seeing, the fans there are getting this erroneous and in many cases, made up stuff, from the DC media

this franchise is in a mess but some of the stuff that we're hearing/seeing is just so far fetched ...

I just listened to the coach's report on ESPN 980 and it's really silly hearing the direction that the questions are trying to take things

I know it's DC but give me a break ... Jay Gruden is obviously getting an incredible induction into what it takes to be the Redskins HC - he is trying to do the best he can and he's just as disappointed as anyone that things are not working at all well with this franchise

IMO Gruden's really frustrated and the QB is the guy that makes the offense work or does not - all 3 are not doing their jobs well enough - don't get me wrong - there are many other parts that are not working either but this guy has had to make 5 starting QB changes and he only has 3 QBs - the defense is a whole other area of disappointment but there are guys busting their tails and trying hard

I still think & hope that Griffin's going to make himself be a better drop-back QB and he will find a way to better recognize what's happening after the snap
I think he's bright enough to know he has to learn to do his job a lot quicker and he has to instinctively know what's going on
you can coach mechanics, you cannot coach speed and arm strength or desire to be better
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance

I don't think that the media is intentionally making stuff up. But they do tend to speculate on why certain things have happened, what certain people are thinking, etc; Its no different than what fans do on message boards like this and shouldn't be confused with actual reporting.

But yes, be glad you don't have to listen to the depressfest radio that is known here as "misery monday".

Maybe, but the problem is that most people who comment on the NFL and judge how good ownership is essentially define "quality of ownership management" by looking at W/L columns. Are Jerry Richardson, Clark Hunt, Alex Spanos, or the Halas family bad owners just because they've presided over mostly mediocre teams? I don't know; maybe people inside these organizations think it's a well-run franchise and that success has eluded them for other reasons. But then, what about their stretches of success? Did that mean they became good owners if they weren't before for the 5-6 years a team did well, or what?

Best example I can think of: which is the "real" Tom Benson: the 20-year owner of the Aints or the 10-year owner of the Brees- and Payton-led Saints?

And how about Jerry Jones? If he is nearly as bad as his reputation, you'd think the Cowboys would have been sitting in the basement with the Skins for most of the last decade. But they haven't been, and so you'll find some way of crediting him with better ownership abilities because the W/L record dictates you must.

Just some thoughts on why I'm always skeptical when sports writers and commenters go on rants about the importance of having a "good" owner, where "good" is implied to be some standard separate from W/L records, but where you never really hear what that is in such a way that you can apply that test to existing franchises.

Dan Snyder's 'ownership' would be judged differently if he were to just let NFL guys manage the franchise - we don't need a magic fix or a 'great' GM or even an Ozzie Newsome (although that would help) we just need a guy that is better at evaluating personnel than Dan and Bruce - that's not a hard thing to do at all - being better than guys that have given us what we've seen the last 5 years is EASY

This team has been so bad for so long, no move, or multitude of moves is too much for this team...
