can you clarify this?
We swapped first-round picks in 2012. It is misleading to say we "gave up" three first rounders — and plenty of people have said that — but Ray didn't. He just said we traded three first rounders, which is true.

I don't know the cap situation well enough to bring that to bear, but that would be the only reason we couldn't keep him if he wasn't going to be a starter. There is no psychological or philosophical reason he can't be #2 next year. Or worse still, sayings like "cut your losses" or whatever. Gruden knows that RGIII still adds value to the team and has some long-term potential.

I'd LOVE to see Griffin win it but I have grave doubts.
I agree. What RGIII needs now is the rest of the season off and a full offseason. He can clear his mind over the next couple of months and will be healthy. And he gets those 8-9 months knowing that his only job is to become a competent pocket passer. If he comes back in August and can't win the starting job, then I'll probably be ready to part ways.
hmmmm....I don't think Bob will be here next year. He's a goner.

The Washington Redskins have a big decision to make on Robert Griffin III this offseason.
Griffin is signed through 2015 at a modest $3.2 million. The Redskins have a team option for a contract extension that would keep him on the team in 2016, but they'd have to pay him around $18.4 million guaranteed, ProFootballTalk reports.
The problem is that the team must decide whether or not to sign him to the extension by May of 2015, according to PFT. That means they won't have another year to gauge his development

I feel pretty much the same FFA - PLUS - I hope this franchise can get a real GM to make a plan and handle the draft
ref. RG3 - from what I gathered from the Steve Young remake, Steve had to spend a lot of time in the offseason working with coaches and getting to where the decision making was a reflex - because of the CBA, Griffin is VERY restricted on what time he can spend with Gruden or McVay in the offseason - Apparently, Gruden does not think the guy Robert worked with last offseason, helped him much at all
I'm hopeful for Robert but what he needs to get done is a VERY difficult thing to do in today's NFL ...
Until recently, Snyder & Allen have made a lot of really bad decisions - nobody with any sense believes this franchise will get better under their guidance Snyder's W/L record = 45% (80-96) - Snyder/Allen = 41% (59-84-1)

I kind of agree that we don't necessarily have to cut him next year. He's going to count a couple million dollars against the cap whether he is here or not. I see someone put the number at $3m next year. I could swear I read it was $6m, but in either case: why cut him, pay that money and then have to go pay somebody else to be the backup?
The decision whether or not to extend his contract is a different story. I don't really see at this point how they could decide to pick up that fifth year option.

I hear you, but this is kind of what I was hoping for/expecting from RGIII this past year. Maybe the need to actually compete for the job will help him, but I'm not feeling optimistic sad to say.

most here have known this for some time - hence the discussion
IMO - the short term plan is Gruden will not give up on RG3 until he's shown that he's not going to help this franchise - that seems to be the case ... but it's not happening just yet
there seems to be little to zero chance the Redskins would extend him ... how great would it be if Robert could pull off a miracle & remake himself as a QB - with his talent, he'd make a lot more than $18M ...

Why? All that applies now, and he's not the starter.

Are you saying we would trade or even cut him? Either option would be monumentally stupid at this point (not to say that the Redskins brain trust is above doing something monumentally stupid). He is signed through 2015, so cutting him outright doesn't help us at all, and his trade value right now probably couldn't get much lower. At this point, I doubt we'll exercise his 2016 option in May, but I think he'll stll be here when training camp rolls around.

not to mention, it's December and 'next year' is only a little over 4 weeks away ...
JSPB's right - despite the disappointment, this franchise will keep hoping for something/anything positive from this player

OK, good to see those numbers. We'd be crazy to cut him, for sure, unless the coaches know something crucial we don't.
A trade for anything mid-round or above is worth considering, the higher the pick the closer you get to "crazy not to take it." (Maybe a 2nd rounder hits that territory?)
I also think we'd be crazy to give him an extension by May. If we don't, and he comes back, wins the starting job, and plays well, we can always sign him to a new contract sometime during the season. Guaranteeing the money now is assuming additional risk that we have no reason to take on. Let him know that we want him here but that 2015 is his year to prove it to us. Prove it to us and we'll invest in you. Or else, like Orakpo and a million others before you, we'll give you a handshake, a "thanks for the memories," and have no regrets as you walk out the door.

Yeah, forget the injuries, the guy has benched two seasons in a row. It would be insane to extend that contract IMO.
I agree we'd have to consider a trade if anything was proposed. Something conditional might be the best bet.
The one thing we don't really know is what the story is behind the scenes. Is his presence causing any problems, is his "camp" leaking crap to the media, etc;

No way in hell they outright cut him. I suspect they'll fish around trade offers, and if they don't get anything above a 3rd round offer, they keep him next year and have an open QB competition.

SPOILER ALERT: We won't get a 3rd rounder or higher for RGIII. Not a chance.

Yeah that's not happening. Based on what he's done the past two years, I think it would have to be like a conditional pick. Fifth rounder and a conditional pick in 2016 if he plays X number of games or whatever.

we have 3 QBs and we have many other positions where we need to add players - why not go with these 3 for now

I know the chances are slim to none that we'll get a 3rd round offer. But stranger things have happened. There are teams desperate for a QB going into next year.

I honestly think these "reports" about Griffin caring more about his branding as opposed to refining his skills at the QB position have some semblance of truth to them. I'd imagine Gruden had heard from one or more of the coaches currently here that were with Shanahan had filled him in on the goings on behind the scenes, and Gruden's first year has pretty much confirmed what the Shanahan's were saying. It's unfortunate, but it sure as hell seems like Gruden wants nothing to do with Griffin. The biggest kicker is benching him with 5 meaningless games left.

Attending something like a Peyton manning QB camp combined with the kind of dedication he showed in physical rehab would be one way to get better.
Not sure he wants to go the Tiger route.

I do think that if he does find that desire and does what is needed this off season, we should not be discarding this player too quickly
I have more faith in Gruden and Griffin than most, but that's just me
