An idea to lift the curse

Post by Snout »

Disclaimer: For decades I have rolled my eyes at the suggestion that the Redskins should change their name. The name never was disparaging and never became disparaging simply because the high priests of the PC movement (you'll notice that most of them are white) declared it so.

But let's face it. This team is cursed. Maybe changing the name would lift the curse.

I know many people think the curse came the day Snyder bought the team. But I think the Redskins became cursed as soon as they left RFK Stadium and moved to the suburbs. The team had suffered years of mediocrity under Norv Turner when Snyder came along. Everybody was thrilled when he bought the team because he was going to whip out the checkbook and bring in the players that would take us to the next level. We saw how that worked out. We are cursed. Even bringing back the legendary Joe Gibbs could not break the power of the curse.

Many voices now are saying that we should focus on the OL and not the "bling" of a big name QB. We tried that. We had several seasons where Chris Samuels and Jon Jansen were among the best linemen in the league. Overall results weren't so great. We underachieved.

The year before RGIII came the Redskins were mediocre. Then he game, gave us a spark, the team lifted its game, and it was like magic. It seemed to vindicate all of those who believed he was worth everything we paid for him. But the curse came back, other teams studied the tape, we decided to make RGIII a pocket passer, and now the curse is as strong as ever. The Redskins cannot shake it. We certainly cannot shake the current owner, and so now I propose that we do the next best thing and shake the name. Change the name to the Hogs. I don't think any swine will claim to be offended.

And maybe that will lift the curse. AT least it will give me something to think about other than how bad we have become.

Snyder needs to figure out how to hire Billichick and have him bring Brady with him...the rest of the team doesn't matter...

No, this is superstitious BS. Keep the name, worry about the fundamentals. Just because we've made a lot of changes doesn't mean we've "tried" everything. A lot of our changes have turned out to be flailing, desperate moves. What we have needed for years is the patience and focus to formulate a plan and stick to it. I think Shanahan brought that for the first time, even though was ultimately unsuccessful. OK. On to the next guy: Gruden.

Take the long view. Be patient. We're going to suffer for a while. But that doesn't mean any Joe's crackpot lottery-ticket idea is better than the more boring strategy currently being employed by Snyder. Get good people in place and let them work. If they prove unsuccessful, move on. We'll find a winning combo at some point.

Maybe all the players and fans could throw salt over their shoulders?

If some Lakota Shaman has a curse on this team, then merely changing the name won't make a difference. Since there is no curse, it doesn't matter anyway.

I do think there is something to "leaving the city for the suburbs." I've never ever ever liked FedEx Field and the extra 30,000 to 40,000 people never got as loud as 55,000 did.

Going back to the city in a more intimate stadium would be a step in the right direction.

We definitely can't change the name. Snyder needs to continue his long history of honoring the Native Americans. lol.
