Redskins: Washington: 'I'm An Effort Guy'

Marcus Washington Q&A

Linebacker Marcus Washington spoke with Redskins.com following a recent practice at Redskins Park:

Q: How has training camp gone for you?

A: "We've had a great camp so far. We've had a couple of injuries, but then we had more guys step up. That's what I like about this team. We are really deep in a lot of positions. That's going to make a big difference during the year."

Q: How would you define your role with the team right now?

A: "I think my role is pretty similar to what it was when I was in Indianapolis. I'm an effort guy. I'm trying to come out, work hard everyday and push my teammates. This is a very exciting time for the team. It's been kind of easy because we have so much talent on defense and I don't have to do anything extra. I just go out and focus on my job, and that's pretty much it."

Q: When rushing the passer, what's the key for you to fend off some of the big, mobile offensive linemen in the league?

A: "It's important to use your hands to fight off blocks. You have to incorporate your speed along with your hands, because if you get an offensive lineman's hands off of you, he can't contain you. I think that's the key to pass rushing. If you can get a guy's hands off you, you're going to be in the quarterback's face a lot."

Q: [Assistant head coach-defense] Gregg Williams has promised an attacking-style defense. How much of it is aggressiveness and how much of it is intimidation?

A: "It's both. With LaVar [Arrington], Sean [Taylor] and me in the middle, wide receivers are definitely going to have a head-on swivel coming across the field. Quarterbacks are going to have nervous feet when they know guys are going to get him. Even if we get just a little pressure the first time, we want the quarterback to start thinking about who's coming after him every time he drops back to pass."

Q: The Redskins made a lot of high-profile acquisitions this offseason, but you were one of the quieter pickups. Describe how the process of becoming a Redskin went for you?

A: "Coach Gibbs and Coach Williams called me the first day [of free agency]. Anytime you get a call from Coach Gibbs, it makes you feel special and wanted. With his history in football, you're excited to play for a coach like that. So I was thrilled when I received that call."

Q: You've worked with Arrington and Mike Barrow for a few months now. How good of a linebacker trio can the three of you become?

A: "I'm excited about playing with them. Mike's kind of the godfather of the defense. He knows everything and he makes really good pre-snap reads. He can alert you on the run and pass. LaVar is just an amazing athlete. He's one of the most talented guys at that position. It makes my job easy. Hopefully, backs will run away from him and run right into me. It'll open things up. We have a great group and we're going to play some good football this year."

Q: You've received a lot of praise from Williams and Coach Gibbs in the first week of training camp...

A: "That means a lot to me. But it will mean more when I go out on the field and show everybody that I'm worthy of it. Right now I'm just trying to work hard. This defense is definitey going to allow me opportunities to make a lot of plays, whether I'm rushing the passer or back covering a receiver. So I know I have to make the most of my opportunities."
