My mother was telling me about this bit that the Daily Show did on the name change, where she said that they had Indians looking down on fans, with their arms folded. I was pretty upset hearing that, thinking that they were scorning fans just for loving a football team, when it's the mascot/owner who they really have a problem with.

However, that was out of context, and I've found the video:

Ya know... I used to think Redskins, Warriors, Chiefs, Indians, Braves, Blackhawks, all were sort of an amalgam for virtues like: "Strength" or "Resolved" or "Fierce" or "Proud." After seeing these overly-sensitive people over and over? These names are now meaning "Maligned" or "Victimized" or "Weak" and even "Shameful." Those adjectives are becoming associated with the names. If they are meaning weak and maligned? I want them to change the name to something that embodies strength and pride! Kinda like what Redskins USED TO BE indicative of.

I agree with that - most fans see the reality that changing the name does not address the important issues that Native Americans have - they fully understand that taken in context the name is not intended to be derogatory or demeaning - I'm sure there is a very small number of Native Americans that are never changing their focus on trying to get the name changed and not just here but everywhere - until they can show that there is a majority that feel put down by these franchises with names that some find derogatory there is no way that they are getting anything done - NONE

Dan Snyder might eventually change the name but it will NOT be because of a few Native Americans

I think most fans probably wouldn't be able to, because for the most part, they don't really care and they would just like the problem to go away. If I were present, I would've went on a spiel about context and the evolution of language. However, because I can defend my position, they wouldn't have used me for their skit.

I can agree that most fans understand what you've said, but they wouldn't have been able to say these things in front of a group of sour-faced Indians nor could they say them in front of a camera. They found some fans with weak arguments to represent the fanbase. I wish I was one of the fans picked for this bit. It would've quickly derailed from a comedy skit to a lecture about language. They would probably just edit me out, lol.

Maybe true, but it IS a comedy show. And they've been doing this stuff for years, so I'm not sure why anybody would agree to appear in the first place. lol.

Pensoneau wrote that he was actually afraid for his life at some points during the tailgate, and the footage ended up so intense that it didn't make the cut for the final Daily Show piece.

He was probably right to be afraid - I'm not sure that was a good idea to walk that group around Fedex!!!

like you said - this is a comedy show and it's not a big deal to me that they felt a need to portray it this way ... that's the problem with this - there are way too may people trying to make out that changing the name is a big deal to a majority of the population and it's not the case at all

Ok well I'll believe that anecdote when I read it. From what I read, the Daily Show solicited Redskins fans via Twitter who wanted to support the name on the show. And I didn't think there was really anything wrong with the people they chose. That lady who got so upset was a school teacher and a former Redskins employee. She wasn't a dummy or a loony or anything.

Anyway, I don't care how smart anybody thinks they are. If you think you can go on the Daily Show and win an argument against snark and professional satirists, you're crazy!

I'm sure the people who went on thought the same as you, but they left in tears.

As for their decision not to field any Native Americans on the panel, well we only have the word of the website that the Daily Show didn't want to field any Native Americans on the panel (they have their own agenda to push as well).

And as for the Daily Show mocking the fans, well its what they do, if you aren't ready for that, you shouldn't be going on the show.

Chris Kooley (thanks THN for the emote and forcing me to misspell his name) went on ESPN's First Take to debate the name with Stephen A. Smith and Skip Bayless. He really held his own, even when Stephen A. tried baiting him with ridiculous questions. Jeez, I really dislike the First Take guys. Stephen A. actually tried to use something that Mike Wise of the Post wrote as an argument. Mike freaking Wise!

Yeah, and Stephen A. (the A stands for A-hole) had this huge scowl on his face the entire time, 'cause he knew he wasn't going to be able to race-bait C00ley. I just wish Chris had mentioned the dozen Indian schools across the country that use the Redskins nickname and logo, and that the logo was designed by Indians and put on the helmet at their behest.

I've never really thought trotting out our one "Native American friend" was a great way to defend the name in the first place. Probably less effective when the guy turns out to be pretty much black/Asian.
